what the heck is strange roots? i always thought the brewery was called draai laag, maybe a name change? a brand of beers? who knows, i am out of the loop, either way, this is my first from them after hearing great things and lusting after them for a few years now, a strong kriek here, apparently fully wild and absurdly priced on tap (16 bucks for an 8 ounce pour i believe), and frankly, it was just okay. too still for the style, at least for me, a dark and earthy cherry vibe that is strong enough to overwhelm any real yeast nuance, but not quite making this one dimensional, and rather sour on the bacterial side, but not all that interesting at the same time unfortunately. ruby red in color, no head at all, nice color saturation though. smells like sweet and dried cherries, a little lactic funk, and some lightly oaky wine, i get a raisin note and something a little darker, but very little grain. there is some alcohol here that makes the sourness feel even more harsh, but a little balance from the sweetness of the fruit, along with some earthy minerals in the finish, a little tannic too. i wish it wasnt so still, and i thought it would be more like the fruited lambics of the old world. disappointing a little bit, especially for the price. not bad, but not as good as it should be, well below my lofty expectations.

Appearance: Pours a hazy apricot nectar color with a one finger head; decent retention and spotty lacing

Smell: Tart black cherry, oak and leathery funk

Taste: Oaky, with a hint of graham, the tart black cherry flavors build; some leathery funk, in the middle, with a sour, but dry, finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation; slight degree of pucker

Overall: This is a seriously underrated beer, IMHO; well-balanced, just tart enough, and packed with cherry flavor

Thanks, ArtAttackEd, for the opportunity

Draai Laag Brewing Co. "La Pienture"
500 ml brown glass bottle without any apparent production coding or freshness dating.
$9.67 @ The Beer Yard (The Beverage Store), Wayne, PA

Look: Very hazy chestnut brown body beneath a short head of khaki. Good head retention and OK lacing considering it's a sour beer.

Smell: "Tartness", light funk, brown sugar, oak, cherry and other red fruit juice, wet leather, hay, earthiness.

Taste: As the aroma suggests with the exception that it's more than just tart, it's sour. More Brettanomyces character comes through as well with some mustiness, a light metallic twang, some wet straw, and dusty earthiness. The cherry comes through, and there's some dark raisin and red grape flavor as well. Intensely flavored, juicy, and sour.

Feel: Medium bodied with a very fine bubbled, spritzy carbonation.

Overall: Quite impressive. Right up there with the best of the classics from Belgium.

This beer is so full flavored and really sour. It tastes a hell of a lot like Rodenbachs grand Cru I believe is what it's called. Delicious.

500ml bottle into a snifter appears clear reddish copper with a khaki head.

The aroma has cherry and plastic phenolics slightly herbal and medicinal.

The taste is sour with cherry skin/pits and a bit of acedic character. Some faint plastic phenolics.

This is medium in body with modest carbonation. Actually, its not as bad as I was expecting but I didnt want to finish the bottle either.

This beers pours a muddy brownish orange color into my tulip glass. Light foamy head that disappears quickly.
Lots of stuff in the nose with the tartness coming through strong. Has that flanders red type of nose. Sour but lots of funk going on here.
The taste is sour but the black cherry comes through nicely. Lots of earthy overtones and some good flavor from the barrel aging. This is supposed to 8% ABV but that is totally hidden in the blend of flavors.
There is a good amount of carbonation in this beer and last through the glass.
In all this is a good solid beer and I think perhaps a little more age will improve the flavors even more.

500 ml bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours slightly hazy reddish orange/light copper color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of tart/sour black cherry, strawberry, raspberry, lemon, green apple, plum, red grape, hay, straw, pepper, brown sugar, toasted oak, and bread; with lighter notes of musty/leathery funk, red wine vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/funky/spicy/acidic yeast, cherry juice, oak barrel, and moderate bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big tart/sour black cherry, strawberry, raspberry, lemon, green apple, plum, red grape, hay, straw, pepper, brown sugar, toasted oak, and bread; with lighter notes of musty/leathery funk, red wine vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness. Moderate fruity/lactic tartness and yeast/tannic oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of black cherry, strawberry, raspberry, lemon, green apple, plum, red grape, hay, straw, pepper, brown sugar, toasted oak, bread, light funk/vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/spicy/acidic yeast, cherry juice, oak barrel, and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/tart/spiciness balance, and zero puckering/astringent flavors after the finish. High carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, crisp, dry, and moderately acidic/tannic/grainy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 8%. Overall this is a great Kriek/Flemish red styled wild ale. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/spicy/acidic yeast, cherry juice, oak barrel, and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, and easy to drink with the balanced acidity and high carbonation. Great balance of Brett/Lacto complexity, cherry juice, and oak flavors; with a nice malt backing. Not too funky, but I am sure that would change with some aging. A very enjoyable offering.

Bright red with no real head to speak of.

This one is very sour. It starts sweet with a little graham, while a bitter acetic oak smell is present, it does not warn you for what's to come. Cherry and green apple are overcome by overwhelmingly acidic sourness. While fun, and especially if you found a friend unfamiliar with the style, I think there's something to be said for balance.
