On tap at Mohawk Bend in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Thin streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa powder, dark chocolate, and cinnamon. Taste is much the same with a semisweet cocoa powder flavor on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with some great aromas and tasty flavors.

Cursory review from notes. On-tap @ Tony's Darts Away. Served in a snifter. Described as a double-chocolate imperial stout...

Seal brown body with thin lion head which dissipates to a lasting sheen. Average lacing, light legs.

Aroma suggests milk chocolate, caramel, and faint tobacco and anise.

Fairly sweet palate entry which again suggests more caramel than chocolate, though there is a bit more cocoa in the finish. Pleasing roasted/specialty malt base though there is something almost artificial about the profile which keeps it from being truly excellent.

Velvety, not-quite-full bodied mouthfeel with perfect carbonation for the style. Alcohol adds flavor without excessive heat.

Imperfect, but still a strong and subtle offering from Smog City.

2015 vintage. 500ml bottle into a Cigar City snifter. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a rich, 1 finger mocha colored head with moderate retention. Beer is pitch black and very viscous. Lacing is layered and thick with excellent stick and oily, slick legs. Pretty nice.

Nose is liquorice, lactose, chocolate, roast, and a slight bit of stale coffee. Moderately aromatic. Average.

Opens iced coffee, dark chocolate and smoke. Liquorice, milk chocolate and big roasty notes in the middle with a slightly boozy and grainy roasted coffee finish. For a coffee dubbed "double chocolate", there sure isn't a lot of chocolate. Aftertaste is bitter coffee beans and a bit of ashiness.

Medium to full bodied with low carbonation. Slick and chewy on the palate and warm and a bit dry going down. Finishes messy with a lingering, filmy aftertaste. Real drinkable. Very smooth for 10%.

The packaging on this beer is tremendous... which for some reason, made me think the beer inside would be also... it was not. It's just average. This is heavy on the coffee and roast and light on the sweet and dark fruit notes. That imbalance is not really my thing.

Distinct chocolate Flavor. A bit oily mouthfeel. Not "hot" at all for 20% abv.

Reviewed from notes. New batch with Ghana and El Salvador cocoa nibs.

A: Pours black with a thin (1/4-inch) dark motor oil head which fades to the rim leaving a few spots of lace.

N: Dark chocolate, roast, and cream. Served a bit too cold so let this warm up.

T: ABV well hidden, bitter dark chocolate and roasted grains. Faint earthyness.

M: Full body and light carbonation. Rich, decadently deep dark chocolate. Slightly oily and viscous bitter finish.

O: Very nice, well done.

For a chocolate stout, I really don't think it can get much better than this. Awesome mouthfeel. So rich and so creamy. Perfect in that regard. Roasty chocolate bomb. I was sad to see that this isn't being brewed any longer….hopefully that changes. If you see this, pick it up. Chances are, you might not see it again, and it is a treat.

a: a rich, silky black color. very very small amount of light penetrating. 2 finger frothy tan head that looks like the surface of the moon (i've been there, trust me)

s: upfront is tonsss of roasted malts, a lovely smooth dark chocolate note, burnt caramel, the faintest hint of berries, and a faint smokey aroma

t: chocolate right away. a mixture of rich, silky milk chocolate and delicious bitter dark chocolate. we fade to some sweet caramel, figs and raisins. theres a slightly lactose-esq sweetness in here, though i don't believe there is any actual lactose in her. we then are treated to some lovely toasted malts that lend a nice mixture of dark sweetness and toasty bitterness. finishes with silky milk chocolate and a hint of alcohol

m: rich and silky. extremely silky. mouthfeel is on the lighter side of medium with a surprising amount of carbonation (which really helps the dark fruits pop in a lovely way)

o: its a luxurious, silky beer. Smog City really knows their Porters and Stouts. this beer is a great drinker that utilizes chocolate in such a nice way in combination with the roasted malts. a real treat. my only criticism would be i could lose the alcohol flavors towards the end of the mouth. still, really really good beer

very bitter. chocolate, roasted malts. slightly bitter sweet. amateur. certainly not worth the $11 for the pint. someone else mentioned the "tinny" taste, and it's in the smell too. aftertaste isn't all bad. i'm left the roasted malt, kind of leathery..... looks beautiful on the pour, though! nice on the sides if not a little thin. wont stick to the glass at all.... if you're wondering what i'm comparing it to: Rogue Double Chocolate, Samuel Smith's Chocolate, MOGLI (the BEST) and that Double Chocolate from England with the purple label.... this one just tastes amateurish.... has potential, but not great.
