This beer pours to an orange/tan color with a good deal of foaming action and a cloudy body. The foam does eventually settle down and it emits floral, pine, toasted malt, and citrus fragrances.

This beer has a taste that emphasizes flavors of pine, caramel, citrus, some sugar, and some wood/earthiness. Some banana, yeast, and spice follow and the complexity doesn’t quit from beginning to end. It’s a conglomerate of flavors and many who sample will notice taste sensations that others will not recognize.

Adelbert’s specializes in Belgian- style ales and this one is certainly an interesting example. Its flavor profile is like that of a Belgian dubble combined with an American India Pale Ale and it’s quite interesting. The full- bodied taste and candy- like qualities mean it’s not the type of beer I would drink regularly, but it does have many things going for it and it is definitely a beer I recommend.

Appearance:
This is a dark earth color, very cloudy and lightens up just a bit towards the bottom of the glass. There’s plenty of carbonation and it’s topped off with a nice thick light tan head
Smell:
It’s rather light on the aroma, mild citrus and grapefruit zest, lemon grass and mils spiciness can all be detected.
Taste:
The hops are great, very prominent but not over powering. The hops become slightly less prominent as you swallow and the bitterness becomes mildly tart. It is sweeter the more it warms up.
Mouthfeel:
Light to medium bodied with lots of carbonation.
Overall:
Very good, not too over powering on the hops and the alcohol is pretty well hidden.

Ah, another Belgian IPA from the brewery that screwed up the last one and slapped Celis' name on it. Expectations are below average given the brewery - whose "traditional Belgian styles only" marketing image is extremely dubious (unless Belgian monks were well acquainted with pecan smoking and bourbon barrel aging). Here's a treat from straight off the label: "A little known fact is that there is no set flavor profile for a Belgian IPA."

Batch No 001. Bottled 02/04/14. 1 pint 9.4 fl oz brown glass bottle with uninteresting label art and unbranded hold hood-and-wire cap over a branded cork acquired yesterday at my local H-E-B grocery and served into an Avery stem-tulip in me gaff in low altitude Austin, Texas. Reviewed live. Reviewed as a Belgian IPA only because it's referred to as such on the label.

Served cold - at fridge temp. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: No bubble show forms as it's poured.

Pours a three finger wide head of white colour. Disappointingly thin. Lacks creaminess and sufficient frothiness. No lacing clings to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Head retention is pretty good - about 4-5 minutes. Airy and weak looking.

Body colour is a clear translucent copper of okay clarity and below average vibrance. Clean; no yeast particles or sediment is visible. Appears overcarbonated.

Overall, it's below average for a Belgian IPA. There's nothing unique or special here, and the head isn't particularly appealing. While there are no egregious flaws, I'm already skeptical.

Sm: Doughy and young. Crackery malts, faint bready malts, Belgian pale malts, biscuit malts, perfumey floral hop character, and a dominant detergent/dishwasher fluid off-note. Yeah, that's just plain unappealing.

No yeast character or alcohol is detectable.

An off-putting aroma of mild strength. I'm hoping the taste is nothing like the aroma.

T/Mf: Nope. Dishwasher fluid and detergent notes are plentiful here, sitting atop a weak thin watery mouthfeel which is neither refreshing nor full-bodied. I pick up disgusting floral notes integrated into the soapy off-flavours as well as some hints of artificial apple and some cardboard (but I don't mean cardboard in the sense that the beer seems oxidized; it isn't). It's undermalted, with only a raw biscuit malt presence coming through in addition to generic clean barley. This is a huge disappointment.

Horrible (im)balance. Not gestalt, nor cohesive. Has no complexity, subtlety, intricacy, or nuance whatsoever - unless Palmolive Lemon counts as nuance. Poor depth of flavour. Below average duration of flavour. Average intensity of flavour.

No yeast character or alcohol comes through.

The pathetic weak texture doesn't do the beer any favors. It's undercarbonated and lacks strength and presence on the palate. This mouthfeel is very poorly executed; regardless of a beer's style, it should never feel like this.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, or harsh.

Dr: I make a point of never drainpouring a beer, but this gave me pause. It's a colossal failure of an attempt at a Belgian IPA. Actually it's just a colossal failure in general. If you gave this to me blind and told me it was your buddy's homebrew, I'd tell you to encourage him to keep his day job. I don't know how Adelbert's stays in business bringing beers like this to market - especially at this unreasonably high price point. This might be the worst Belgian IPA I've ever had. I'll be steering well clear of it going forward, and I'm starting to think Adelbert's may be the worst brewery in Texas (based on what I've tried in the 7 months I've lived here). Difficult to drink given its low quality. Avoid this one, no matter how much you like the style.
