Bottled: 01/15/2014
Appearance:
Medium tan colored head. The body (as the name suggest) is completely black and delightfully sinister looking
Nose:
Heavy roast notes and cocoa- not a really powerful nose, but makes me want to take my first sip even more to find out what is underneath
Palate:
Very malty, coffee grounds, slightly bitter and perhaps some traditional Belgian Character to it. All of this is accompanied by a very long, persistent and extremely good finish. Very light mouthfeel and very drinkable.

Served into a tulip glass

Appearance: Very dark but not quite opaque. Has a dark reddish/brown hue throughout. This one has a solid head. I counted 2 1/2 fingers. The head lingers for awhile, but eventually dies down to about 2 centimeters. Lacing is splotchy and inconsistent.

Smell: Not a whole lot going on here. Toasted smell with faint hints of almond, vanilla, and dried fruit. Nothing stands out.

Taste: It looks like it may be rough, but as the nose suggests; its a subtle beer. Again I am picking up some dried fruit, but ever so lightly. Little to no taste of malts or hops. In all honesty, the taste makes me think of a bitter Dr. Pepper.

Mouthfeel: Light and creamy with a toasted aftertaste. Leaves a slight coating on the mouth, but nothing too slimy.

Overall: I was not impressed nor was I dissatisfied. I find the name to be quite unfitting since this beer does not seem rare or beastly.

A- Pours a cloudy brown with the slightest amount of off-white head.

S- Not very much going on with the nose. Maybe some figs?

T- The dark malt comes through foremost, followed by the sweetness of the Belgian yeast.

M- Decent carbonation. Nothing extraordinary but nothing bad either.

O- I was a little let down by this one because I love dark ales and one of the first beers I ever had was a Belgian black ale, back in 2006. Alas, this one just did not hit the spot.

This one pours a beautiful rich black with a lightly colored head that is effervescent, lively and settles at a more than acceptable rate. There is decent uniform lacing as well.

The nose is smoky sweet malt with notes of dark chocolate and hops.

The taste is nice and complex roasted goodness with strong hopping that is prevalent and elegantly balanced with the roasted barley giving way to sweetness that is a mix of caramels, coffee, toasted bread and spice with a very nice and pleasant dry finish.

The mouthfeel is rich but not heavy and is just right for this type of brew.

Overall the beer is extremely good and rather enjoyable. I highly recommend it and will be drinking this one again.

I can't say it any better than reviewer BigBarley, so I'm just going to quote him:

"Not the best dark-style I've tried, but it's got it's own quirky appeal. I recommend it when you're in the mood for something that won't strangle your taste buds but will still stand out a little. Unique without blowing your mind."

Pours out a nice dark brown color, almost black in appearance, its topped off with a semi-dark tan head that’s bubbly and quickly dissipates into a thin ring of lacing with an island of bubbles in the middle. Floral and fruity aromas are present, some spiced apples and mild fig smells too. This is a very bitter ale at first, good roasted coffee flavors do come through, the spices and fruits take a back seat and are detectable. It is dry and light-to-medium bodied. The aftertaste is sweet, the bitterness calms down, the roasted coffee mellows out, and the spice comes through a bit more. The bitterness calms down, as the ale warms up, overall not a bad beer.
