I bought this beer at Biercraft in Brooklyn, NY. The local rep/importer was at the store presenting several of his more obscure beers for a tasting.

This was enjoyed on New Year's eve. I wish I had more than two small bottles to share. What we have here is a delightfully crafted beer that seems quite hard to characterize. It has notes upfront in keeping with a standard Belgian strong ale. But quickly you find the sour taste of a Belgian sour ale coming through. I find it more satisfying and interesting that a regular sour ale.

The understated packaging, with a beige wrapper and a simple drawing might well represent the subtlety of the brew. Or it might just be too understated. I haven't made up my mind on that one.

Well done gentlemen!

Well done!

I picked up a bottle of Brouwerij 't Gaverhopke's Extra a couple months ago for $4.69 at The Lager Mill. I was picking up a few different Belgian beers and I thought I would take a chance on this one, so lets see how it goes. No visible bottling date. Poured from a brown 11.2oz bottle into a snifter.

A- The label looks ok, but it's pretty simple looking and it isn't that eye catching. It poured a dark red brown color that took on more of a dark red hue when held to the light with pretty much no head at all just some bubbles that clung together for a little bit and it didn't leave any lacing behind. This wasn't the best looking beer, I wish it had some head and lacing.

S- The aroma starts off with a low amount of high sweetness followed by the malts being the first to show up and they impart a grainy, toasted, caramel, bready, bread crust and wheat like aromas followed by a big sweet and fruity aroma with some dark fruit and slight cherry like aromas seeming to stick out. Up next come a lighter vinegar like aroma with a strange nutty aroma towards the end. The aroma was ok, but it was a little strange.

T- The taste seems to be fairly similar to the aroma and it starts off with higher amount of medium sweetness followed by a weird watery fruit flavors that reminds me of watered down juicy juice and there also an acidic lighter vinegar flavor. Up next comes the malts which impart all the aspects that I got in the aroma with toasted, grainy, caramel, and bread crust flavors seeming to stick out the most. On the finish there's a somewhat lighter amount of medium tartness, with some grainy and toasted flavors showing up in the aftertaste. This was an ok tasting beer, I think the flavors seemed to clash a little and it was almost as strange as the aroma.

M- Not the smoothest, a little acidic, not crisp at all, on the somewhat lighter side of being medium bodied with a very low amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel wasn't that great, it needed some carbonation.

Overall I wasn't a big fan of this beer and I didn't think it was a good example of the style, it didn't really have most of the aspects that I look for in the style and If I tried this blind I think there would be no way that I would guess this was a Belgian Strong Dark Ale, to me it's a little similar to Flanders Red or something like that. This beer didn't have good drinkability, the alcohol was hidden very well and it wasn't filling, but the taste didn't do a good job at holding my attention and I think half the bottle is enough for me, the acidity might start to wear on me after more than that. What I like the most about this beer was how well the alcohol was hidden, I was really surprised that hardly any alcohol showed up in the flavor and aroma. What I liked the least about this beer was the how the flavors clashed, to me the toasted, caramel and grainy flavors didn't work well with the acidic vinegar like flavors. I wouldn't buy this beer again and I wouldn't recommend it either. All in all I didn't really enjoy this beer, it was had an odd combination of flavors and aromas that didn't work that well together. This didn't make for a good first impression for this brewery and I'll be thinking twice before I think about buyinh any more of their beers. Better luck next time guys, this one just wasn't for me.

Poured from 11.2 oz stubby brown bottle. Notching on label indicates best by D 16 (might be 15). Purchased in 2011 at Wine Warehouse (Charlottesville, VA) and cellared at 60F.

A: Chestnut with purplish highlights. Pours with no head and no lacing. A lot of floaties.

S: Very vinous and grapey with a light vinegar aroma. There are some tart cherry notes and some prunes. Herbal earthy hopping is background. Yeast esters are vinous and stone fruits with a bit of spice. Alcohol is there but not solventy. Pretty nice aroma with a lot of complexity but cohesiveness is not the best -- the aroma is kind of all over the place.

T: The flavor is a lot more vinous and acetic than the aroma lets on. I am fairly sensitive to the sour and vinegar aspect of beers so it may not be as strong for some, although I would still categorize it as medium in the sourness department. The stone fruitiness with tart-sour black cherry, prune, and grapes are there. Very wine-like with a light spice note. Herbal earthy hops with mild to moderate bitterness overall. Yeast character does support the earthy nature of this beer pretty well with a light nutmeg note. Definitely has some light sweetness in the finish which sort of battles weirdly with the vinous, grape and acetic character doesn't really work that well. Reminds me of cabernet barrel aged beers. Flavors are complex but not cohesive, similar to the aroma. This style of BSDA is not generally in my wheelhouse -- I do not generally drink sours because of my sensitivity -- but this beer isn't bad but just disjointed.

M: Fairly light for the ABV, more in keeping with a sour ale or BSDA. Carbonation is high, on par with the style. It had a lightly dry finish.

O: Not a bad beer but just not really my cup of tea. Interesting and complex but doesn't really come together -- not a beer that is greater than the sum of its dissimilar parts.

A - Pours a pretty butterscotch color with a light off white head. The head quickly dies down, there is little lacing. This beer is somewhat cloudy with strong carbonation.

S - Smells of toffee and raisons. I do not note much hops nor can I detect the alcohol, malty

T - This is a sour but it is not overpowering and is nicely balanced by the malts. Taste raison and caramel. Not a lot of complexity. Again, for a 12%, the alcohol is very well hidden.

M - The beer feels surprisingly light and thin. Could use more body, highly carbonated.

O - Not a world class beer, but this is an easy drinking introduction to the sours and I was able to get it at a fair price. It would be easy to quaff a few of these down on a hot summer day but at 12% it will quickly sneak up on you. This is and interesting hybrid of dark belgian and sour. I will seek more

Looks like notches on the label indicate this is best by December 2015.

Dark reddish brown with some orange highlights. An off-white head forms a thick ring and retains well as such. Some serious floaties on the final pour. Smell is fruity, a little bit tart. Red wine comes to mind right away, definitely grapes, prunes. Nice but not much else going on there.

Taste is similar, definitely a decent amount of tartness there. Specific fruit tastes are not as distinct, but still a red wine feel overall. There is some light spice, cola, just a bit of bread, and some toffee there as well. Mouthfeel has somewhat lackluster carbonation, feels a bit watery, yet hides the 12% really, really well.

Kind of feels disjointed all around, from the sound of other reviews this beer doesn't seem to be very consistent. Not bad though, the tartness is not expected for the style but it's not off-putting, just not all that interesting.

Pours no head so there is no lace. Murky brown color, ton of yeast left in bottle. Very light carbonation and medium bodied. Sour fruit nose and flavor is sour fruit, no sweet malt as some raters have mentioned. Not my idea of a BSDA. High ABV is hidden. $5.99 for a 330ml bottle from Julio's Liquors Marlboro, MA.

330ml bottle, best before 2016

A- Murky brown with maybe some sediment, a finger of slightly off-white head disappears pretty quickly leaving just a hint of lacing. Overall not at all attractive but this is 12%ABV so you can't except a nice head

S- Sweet dark malts and sugary notes nicely complemented by a slight vinegar feel that adds a bit of a peculiar feel. Slight dark fruit notes on the back of things

T- Very sweet as the smell suggested, maybe even for the style. Sweet malts, classic belgian yeast feel. Dark fruit notes are quite vivid (raisin, cherries...). Again the slightest sour/vinegar touch bringing something more to the mix

M- Medium body (which means suprisingly light and quaffable for the 12%ABV), moderate carbonation. Stiil very soft and quite creamy on both tongue and palate, going down sooo easy for the style

O- A classic BSDA (or quad or whatever), but whit a delicate sour twist and great drinkability for the style. Sure worth it

mahogany color beer with white small dusty nose no lacing.
Sweet mouthfeel with nutty nites and red raisins.
12 sneeks up on you with banana and spice.

Overall this beer hits you without knowing. A one hit wonder. Trying before you buy it if you do not like dark beer to sweet
