Poured from a 330ml bottle into my Duvel Green tulip. Picked this one up at Stateline a few days ago.

a - Pours a deep mahogany brown color with a reddish tint, one finger of fluffy off white head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of sour dark fruits, Belgian yeast, light spices, sweet fruity malts, and light funk. A little tart/sour and funky, but not overpowering; pretty nice nose.

t - Tastes of sour dark fruits, fruity malts, light lactic notes, light funk, wood/oak, and Belgian yeast and pepper. Again, a nice light funk and tart fruit to it.

m - Medium body and moderate to high carbonation. Smooth and just a touch overcarbonated, but it isn't bad.

o - Overall a pretty nice Belgian ale. Some nice light funk and tart dark fruits, and pretty easy to drink for 12% ABV. Would like to have again.

Imported by Twelve Percent LLC, Brooklyn, NY. The bottle reads "'T GAVERHOPKE EXTRA" "Ambachtelijk bier van hoge gisting" - 'old fashioned beer of high fermentation'. "Produced and bottled by: Brouwerij 't Gaverhopke, Stasegem, Belgium".

The Extra pours a fairly clear, deep chestnut and ruby body beneath a creamy head of tan that holds quite well and leaves some very nice 'mountains' of lace rising up above the liquid.

The aroma expresses dark - both the fruit and the bitter-ish skins: plum/prune, fig, raisin, etc. There's a sugary side to it like you find in dried fruits. And there's a little bit of earthiness to it as well: mushrooms, underbrush, rotting wood.

In the mouth it's surprisingly creamy and smooth, delicately carbonated, and medium-full bodied with a dextrinous edge.

The flavor is rich, and more full and deep than bright. The dark fruitiness and subtle, supple spiciness is what it's all about. It's malty, but not clearly caramelish. The dark fruity notes also turn away, although they're clearly present. Yeasty minerals and earthiness cover the malt and fruit in a thin, form-fitting veil. A delicate spiciness is present, and makes itself known mainly in the finish, along with some leafy, and perhaps spicy, hops. Or is that the alcohol that's lending to the spice? If it is, that's about all that it shows of itself.

It's really quite remarkable! ~ Oh so rounded! So perfectly balanced! And so flavorful, but in an understated manor. With just the tiniest bit of funkiness in its woody, earthy, mineralish character. Complex and compelling! Worth seeking out!

Creamy, tiny-bubbled lace; with a swirl, this beer shows some legs and a deep reddish hue. Suggestions of alcohol- soaked raisins, coconut, clove and wildflowers awaken the nostrils. Smooth slickness on a full body. Malty, but semidry with a tartness up front and some rum raisin flavors in the back. Fresh-toasted grain and modest hops field the rest of the palate. A very well-hidden 12 percent, with only a slight warmth. Easily a tasty brunch beer or a nightcap. Belgian fans, hunt this one down.

On tap at Local Option. Past the abv line for Belgian yeasts I think. Orange and fruity, yet sour and astringent finish. Booze warming. Aroma neutral. Mouthfeel plus but sour and astringent.Not a great representative of the style. Not very drinkable.

There is a great write-up on this Stasegem micro-brewery over at the BelgianBeerBoard - including some video footage of the tavern itself and the brewmaster, a young woman named Gudrun. Worth a watch. In any case, on to the review:

Best before March, 2012. Poured from a 330mL bottle into my Trappist Westvleteren chalice.

Liquid is quite cloudy, changing from deep carmine to rust depending on the angle of the light, often suffused with a bright glow. A thin creamy pearl head forms, flanked by a lasting ridge like an event-horizon. Slow moving cakey lacing and delicate tears from the high ABV coat the sides.

A big dose of esters and malt in the nose - brandied raisins, spelt, and an undercurrent of yeast.

Quite a unique flavor profile with buckwheat, sour apples, and cherry pits on the palate entry. Tart and bitter tastes finally compromise with an array of melanoidins leading into a dry, lightly bready finish with further waves of tart fruit. Hushed tones of wild fermentation seems to be at play as well, as there is something about this that almost reminds me of Orval for just a brief moment.

Medium-bodied, and crisp, despite the alcohol which is mostly detectable through flavor rather than heat.

A nice change of pace for the style - still traditional, but much more dry and a bit tart compared to many other examples.

11.2oz into a tulip. No bottle date.

A: Deep reddish body, with a light tan head. Good formation and retention, leaves a frothy layer and little lacing. Lighter end of the spectrum in the body.

S: Aroma of plum and roasted malts, good levels of sweetness and no hop presence. The slight note of a wild character.

TM: Very light in all aspects. The flavor has a classic note Belgian quad, but all are very low in esters and plum and currant flavors. Mouthfeel is very crisp and quite refreshing. Lingering taste is fairly short. Funky character is at low levels and is very approachable.

O: Overall a very low end intensity, well balanced brew. This has 12% ABV, very well hidden, but not what truly defines the style.

Looks quite dark, smells bready, thin head. Tastes bready and raison. Nice candy sugar finish. Its a nice belgian strong. For the price 4.99$ its a good buy. Packs a punch and tastes pretty good. Seriously raisony though. I am new to the rating thing and now I see what raison tastes like in a beer. A touch syrupy. The distributer is new to the state of maine, I will buy this again if I feel like packing a quick buzz. Almost no trace of alcohol at 12% can't complain.

Picked up a single at Abe's Cold Beer for $5.25. The label read "EXTRA" and that's just the exported name. Very interesting. This doesn't just follow the typical quad lines of smooth caramel malts. Instead it starts with a mix of dry lemon with tart raspberries, then cocoa and toffee with a very mild earthy mustiness. The aroma is a little cleaner than the flavor with dry, earthy cocoa and a grape juice note. Finishes with a tart juicy feel, sort of like drinking cranberry juice, and no hint of alcohol. I'd like the flavors here to be richer, but this is still tasty and very easy to drink Belgian.

Poured into a snifter. Slightly sour smell--almost reminding me of apple cider vinegar. A rich, cloudy brown with a very slight white head that disappears rather quickly. Drinks almost flat, but I don't really mind. No lacing whatsoever. Taste starts sour with apple, plum and raisins coming through before moving into an earthy middle, characteristic of Belgian yeast. An exceptionally dry finish to this beer with only the most subtle hint of booziness that occasionally plagues other quads. I like it, but I tend to like sour tastes in just about every style. Would have liked more mouthfeel and aroma, just more carbonation in general. Still, a sour quad...delicious.

Served from tap into a Trappe Door tulip. Poured a reddish brown with a three finger khaki colored head that subsided to one finger very slowly. Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, dark fruit, tart, and fruit. The flavor was of sweet malt, dark fruit, subtle tart, fruit, and bread. It had a medium feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a fairly good brew. The tart aspect I picked up on in this one was a little off-putting when combined with the rest of the aspects going on in this brew. It just really felt out of place for me. The rest of the brew was fairly good, but definitely not awe-inspiring unfortunately. I really would suggest this brew to others out there and I suggest you do the same regardless of the off-putting tart character.

Poured into a Duvel glass a burnt crimson tone with a slim cap of tan foam. Served fairly cold, based on others' descriptions of gushing bottles, but this one was pretty tame. Vinous white wine with some raisin and boozy phenols behind it. More wine like elements in the flavor, honey, orange peel, and some grape aftertaste and a sticky residue on the lips. Not as sweet as most Quads, there was a low level fruity tartness that was welcome. Finish was slightly dry, with the lingering taste of grape jelly. A full bodied sipper that wasn't too sweet or syrupy. Good stuff.

11.2 ounce bottle. Served in a snifter, the beer pours a murky copper/brown color with about a half inch off-white head. Head retention and lacing are both decent. Aroma is cherries, plums, cinnamon, yeast, and raisins. The brew tastes like tart berries and apples, dark fruit, bready malt, and some earthy/herbal hops. Nice mix between the tart and sweet flavors, although I think the sweet flavors are a bit stronger. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit creamy with good carbonation. Drinkability is good, it's easy and enjoyable to drink. Also, the 12% ABV isn't noticable at all when drinking it, but it hits you a bit afterwards. I think it's a good brew, it's worth a try.

Brownish red color, burgundy. Small tan head which went away quickly. No sediment or haze. Not sure if this is bottle conditioned or not. Good head retention and alcohol legs/lacing are quite impressive.

The aroma is almost exactly like a red wine. Red grape skins, minerals, raisins, and grape juice.
Carbonation hits upfront...not in a bad way.

Drinks a lot like a carbonated red wine. Earthy flavors mixed in with red grape skins, green apples, and dark raisins. Slight sweetness sticks on the back of the tounge and mouth. The beer even has a sour touch to it. Not at all mouth puckering or that noticable but sits in the background. At 12% this one is masked really well and you'll only be noticing it when you get a buzz.

Overall this is different than many Belgian strong dark ales or Quads. The traditional dark fruits that are are in most Belgian dark ales are not present and a red wine/raisin quality highlight this beer quite nicely. A must try for any fan of Belgian beers!

Poured into a Nostradamus flute glass. Pours a cloudy dark copper amber. Half finger active off-white head with lacing. Aroma of light fruit, sour and somewhat vinous. Flavor is a mixed fruit, plum, grape, raisin, raspberries. Overall sweet, but with a strong sour element. Finishes a bit oaky and sour. The complex fruit and sweet / sour was very interesting. I'm not a big fan of sours, but this was a case where the sour element was a minor component of an interesting flavor combination. Nice medium to heavy bodied with some creaminess and nice carbonation. Nicely made and interesting. Hides the high ABV beautifully.

This is an outstanding beer. Who knew it was 12%? So easy going down. I could drink a hundred of these. The sour flavors, while clear, are still pretty subtle compared to other typical Belgian strong flavors: malts, fruits, etc. This is so well done, smooth, almost aged in flavor. I don't find it as "unsual" as others. Just a superb, well-made, strong, yet easily drinkable, complex beer. A triumph. (I sound like a movie critic.)

33cl bottle @ the Diester Bierfestival on 20 Oct 2012, labelled as 'Den Twaalf.'

Dirty washing up water brown: scummy head, not a good start.

Strange farmyard esters: fruity, yet with a grubby feel to the smell.

Semi-sour moving towards vinegarous in the taste and mouth feel: did I try a bottle with a yeast infection? No according to a couple on my table it had been the same when they'd had it elsewhere and many months before. Tried to enjoy it, but failed.

A long way from being a good quadrupel on the evidence I had in my glass: the wife didn't like her portion either!

I had this on-tap at Max's during the Belgian Independence day celebration. Served in a sample glass.

Appearance: The beer pours a cloudy reddish amber color with a half finger of fluffy off white head and some great retention.

Smell: Sweet malt with some red berries and vinegar notes. I'm getting a hint of cranberry juice.

Taste: Different from the smell. Rather sweet throughout the sip with some dark fruit notes. There is just a hint of tartness, I expected more. The finish is full of spice from the Belgian yeast and a bit acidic.

Mouthfeel: The body is on the thicker side of medium with foamy, fluffy carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: This was a weird beer for me. I expected more sourness after smelling it. I don't think I would want more.

I picked up a bottle of Brouwerij 't Gaverhopke's Extra a couple months ago for $4.69 at The Lager Mill. I was picking up a few different Belgian beers and I thought I would take a chance on this one, so lets see how it goes. No visible bottling date. Poured from a brown 11.2oz bottle into a snifter.

A- The label looks ok, but it's pretty simple looking and it isn't that eye catching. It poured a dark red brown color that took on more of a dark red hue when held to the light with pretty much no head at all just some bubbles that clung together for a little bit and it didn't leave any lacing behind. This wasn't the best looking beer, I wish it had some head and lacing.

S- The aroma starts off with a low amount of high sweetness followed by the malts being the first to show up and they impart a grainy, toasted, caramel, bready, bread crust and wheat like aromas followed by a big sweet and fruity aroma with some dark fruit and slight cherry like aromas seeming to stick out. Up next come a lighter vinegar like aroma with a strange nutty aroma towards the end. The aroma was ok, but it was a little strange.

T- The taste seems to be fairly similar to the aroma and it starts off with higher amount of medium sweetness followed by a weird watery fruit flavors that reminds me of watered down juicy juice and there also an acidic lighter vinegar flavor. Up next comes the malts which impart all the aspects that I got in the aroma with toasted, grainy, caramel, and bread crust flavors seeming to stick out the most. On the finish there's a somewhat lighter amount of medium tartness, with some grainy and toasted flavors showing up in the aftertaste. This was an ok tasting beer, I think the flavors seemed to clash a little and it was almost as strange as the aroma.

M- Not the smoothest, a little acidic, not crisp at all, on the somewhat lighter side of being medium bodied with a very low amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel wasn't that great, it needed some carbonation.

Overall I wasn't a big fan of this beer and I didn't think it was a good example of the style, it didn't really have most of the aspects that I look for in the style and If I tried this blind I think there would be no way that I would guess this was a Belgian Strong Dark Ale, to me it's a little similar to Flanders Red or something like that. This beer didn't have good drinkability, the alcohol was hidden very well and it wasn't filling, but the taste didn't do a good job at holding my attention and I think half the bottle is enough for me, the acidity might start to wear on me after more than that. What I like the most about this beer was how well the alcohol was hidden, I was really surprised that hardly any alcohol showed up in the flavor and aroma. What I liked the least about this beer was the how the flavors clashed, to me the toasted, caramel and grainy flavors didn't work well with the acidic vinegar like flavors. I wouldn't buy this beer again and I wouldn't recommend it either. All in all I didn't really enjoy this beer, it was had an odd combination of flavors and aromas that didn't work that well together. This didn't make for a good first impression for this brewery and I'll be thinking twice before I think about buyinh any more of their beers. Better luck next time guys, this one just wasn't for me.

So...been wanting to try this for a while now...hmmm.
Appears a transparent ruby red with a small white cap that quickly fades into a gentle collar. Spotty bits of lacing.
Smell is sweet prune juice, red raspberries, jam, juice, red wine, wineberries.
Taste...oh, boy. I applauded their efforts here. Very sweet with caramel and intense berry jam like a big Pinot noir. Interesting but I'm just not feeling it. Starts sweet, finishes sweet.
Mouthfeel is full bodied, chewy, syrupy, with a plastic flavor clinging during the swallow. Man, just too much going on and way too sweet with too much heat. Can't do it. Just can't even finish it. Leaving my glass here. Bummer. :(

From 12oz bottle to Bruges hybrid glass on 5/18/11
*From notes

A: Prune purple-brown in color. 1.25 finger head on a decent pour. Little to no lacing.

S: Almost nil. It's like the glass is literally empty, though I do detect a hint of mild soy sauce and stinky cheese. As it warms, a splash of funk hits the nostrils.

T: A touch of mellow apricot and tin can. It's also a bit funky. Whether or not this was intentional, I don't know. What I do know is that it adds a nice layer of complexity that makes this brew signifigantly more palatable.

M: Quite creamy and rich. It's thick enough and really helps to balance out the 12% ABV.

O: What an odd little beer. 't Gaverhopke's Extra comes off like a strange mix of a Belgian Strong and a young lambic. This isn't something I'll be returning to, but none the less it's an extremely unique brew.

330ml bottle, best before 2016

A- Murky brown with maybe some sediment, a finger of slightly off-white head disappears pretty quickly leaving just a hint of lacing. Overall not at all attractive but this is 12%ABV so you can't except a nice head

S- Sweet dark malts and sugary notes nicely complemented by a slight vinegar feel that adds a bit of a peculiar feel. Slight dark fruit notes on the back of things

T- Very sweet as the smell suggested, maybe even for the style. Sweet malts, classic belgian yeast feel. Dark fruit notes are quite vivid (raisin, cherries...). Again the slightest sour/vinegar touch bringing something more to the mix

M- Medium body (which means suprisingly light and quaffable for the 12%ABV), moderate carbonation. Stiil very soft and quite creamy on both tongue and palate, going down sooo easy for the style

O- A classic BSDA (or quad or whatever), but whit a delicate sour twist and great drinkability for the style. Sure worth it

Sweet mouthfeel with nutty nites and red raisins.
12 sneeks up on you with banana and spice.

Overall this beer hits you without knowing. A one hit wonder. Trying before you buy it if you do not like dark beer to sweet

pours a murky brown tone with a finger of beige/khaki head. mediocre retention; decent lacing.

nose is a bit underwhelming - not as robust as i typically look for but in attendance are notes of toastiness, dark fruits, and bit of tart/funk. interesting flavor profile follows: not at all what i was expecting - quite unlike most BSDAs i've sampled. spice, caramel malts, toastiness, and some sour/tartness, especially in the finish. well-hidden 12% ABV.

medium-full bodied with average carbonation. pretty drinkable considering that ABV. nice beer.

**** GUSHER ALERT **** This one semi-erupted all over my office floor (damn I hate it when that happens).

Poured a medium mahogany color with a rather larged sized off white head. Aromas of yeast, dark fruits (plums and cherries), and I was getting some woodiness. Tastes of dark fruits (more than the aromas), chocolate, and some caramel. This one had a sour and tart finish that I kinda dug. Alcohol content well hidden.
