Nose: spicy, grainy malt, light fruit, earthy woody hops. Pours hazy copper amber with a 1” foam cap that produces above average lace. Light fruit laced butterscotch to toffee palate accented by a bold hop finish with some hop astringency and drying on the finish. Creamy above average carbonation and body.

From the website - The pipes and drums of the Brian Boru Irish Pipe Band were the inspiration for Mankato Brewery's Saffron Kilt. The melody of this saffron colored ale starts with the same malt used in the finest Irish whiskeys, which harmonizes to the tune of the hops' spicy and citrus notes. Like the pipes and drums, these flavors combine in a fantastic rhythm, and finish with a great cutoff. Slainte!
For me a tale of two pints. First one I had with a burger. It blended very nicely with the food. Even with a streak of bitterness it never overpowered the flavors of the food and in fact worked well throughout.
The second pint was without food and it became a much more complex drink, esp. in the flavor. The aroma was rather subdued and hard to pick up. Amber colored, although on the lighter side. Very clear and intentionally poured with minimal head, although a white one was there and it settled out.
Flavors were rather complex. Nice malt flavors including a streak of slightly smokey malt. Interesting hop flavors that never overpower or dominate, but blend quite nicely with the malt flavors. Soft fruit in the hops and moves to a really nice bitterness that finishes with a soft and slow decline. Moderately light feel and moderate carbonation.
Good solid drinking pale ale. Close to English in style, but in the end enough hop flavors and clean finish to push more towards APA.
