Sorely lacking hops in the fridge, picked this up as part of a mixed sixer to scratch that bitter itch. 12 oz. bottle that mentions the "malt base". Huh. I might not have picked it up had I noticed that tidbit. Split with my wife.
Words aside, the beer pours like an amber which, if it has an abundance of malt, I suppose makes sense. Smells like a red too - not a redhead, that's different - caramel squares that have been aged on pine lumber.
Haymaker also tastes like a red. Caramel is all over the beer. There's a decent edge of pine, but it tastes treated, almost metallic (my wife's description, & it's an accurate one). Very sweet. Resiny in the mouth. Any beer that you're "one and done" after six ounces probably isn't a brew I'm going to be seeking out again.
Hungh. A malty IPA with a bit of copper twang in the throat? Not a very good beer in terms of taste, depth, or drinkability. Two ounces might have been enough.

Dark amber in color. Little head that leaves a sticky lacing on the glass.
Malty and hippy aroma, mostly grassy. Fairly balanced.
Beer starts malty, a little toast and caramel. Finish is slightly bitter and hop lingers for only a few moments in the aftertaste. Fairly balanced beer.
Medium mouthfeel, good carbonation.
Overall a good beer. Not very IPA like with all the caramel malt, but it is tasty and very drinkable. There is a little bit of buttery diacetyl that becomes more and more apparent with each sip, but otherwise flawless.
