This is a good beer for what it claims to be, if you like your beer with "hints" of what the bottle says it tastes like, this is not the beer for you! The mint is vey pronounced, and in the fore front. Mint is strong in the aroma as well as the taste, not much roasted malt or chocolatey flavors to speak of. has a good silky low carbonated mouth feel and aftertaste thoe. overall a good beer if you like something different, rich and minty! a good one to try by the single or split a four with a friend!

shockingly low ratings here for a beer thats pretty darn good. this thing pours a beautiful shiny black color, really dark, with a smallish light brown head. it doesnt smell particularly intense, the mint is just subtle, pepperminty, and the barley doesnt smell nearly as darkly roasted and bitter as it looks like it should, but the flavor is there. lots of mint all the way through, a little sweeter to combat the bitter darkness, and a real fresh vibe to it that lightens the whole experience. the mint lasts through the finish with nice dark chocolate notes as well, a very well flavored brew. there arent a ton of mint stouts out there, ska and stone come to mind, but this offers something unique i think, a great use of mint, and should be respected maybe a little more for crafting something different and delicious. rich feel but it finishes clean. enough carbonation for a darker beer, and a lower abv and not too much sweetness has me wanting for more than one. well done, despite the ratings.

A mint stout does not really appeal to me, but after being thoroughly impressed with the brown ale, I had to give this a shot. Waxed dipped 12oz. bottles. That must of taken some time. Pours very dark black with just a finger of tan head that settled to a thin cap. Quite a bit of spotty lacing is left down the glass.

Nothing particularly unique about the aroma. Smells like a milk/sweet stout. I pick up some lactose as well as some mocha notes. A little mild roast as well. If there is mint in the aroma, I have a hard time picking it up.

I do pick up the mint in the flavor. I do not think it actually works though. Without the mint I think they would have a pretty good stout. Nice dark malt, roasted malt, with hints of mocha and coffee. Then the mint enters the picture and adds an odd flavor in the finish. The mint is not strong but strong enough to make a drinker take notice.

Solid body and carbonation. This is a relatively low ABV stout so the body feels substantial. Good texture.

A nice experiment that did not really appeal to me. I think it is well crafted and will find some fans.

I haven't reviewed any beer in a while but for some reason I felt compelled with this offering from Mankato Brewery.

I purchased this as a single instead of springing for a 4-pack considering I have never had a beer from this brewery and have never had a mint beer either. I am glad I chose this route.

Mankato Mint Stout comes in a brown long-neck bottle with a small coating of light-green wax over the cap. I am not sure exactly why they chose this route as waxed beers are generally ones you would cellar. I don't see this one holding up very well with age, so in this case I just see the wax as a nice aesthetic touch but an unnecessary inconvenience. On the bottle they say "Dark and Minty, Mankato Brewery's Mint Stout is something a bit different. Starting with the flavors of dark chocolate and coffee, we then complimented it with an amazing mint flavor and aroma. Some think it's the perfect thing for after dinner, and others think it's great all day".

The appearance of the beer is pretty disappointing. I usually judge a stout of this ABV in appearance not by its color but its head retention. In the case of this beer it failed miserably. Both chilled and at room temperature I was unable to generate much of a head even with an aggressive pour, and what was there dissipated very quickly leaving a faint tan ring. By the end there was barely a trace of lacing on the glass as a result. The color is a dark dark brown practically black with no light coming through. The edges show a deep mahogany.

The smell might be the high point of this beer for me. At first you get aromas of coffee and bakers chocolate with a slight hint of something you can't quite make out. It always interests me how a beer can have aromas so similar to coffee without actually having coffee added to it. The real kicker in the aroma is when you really start delve deep into the dark roasted aroma the mint slowly creeps up on you and becomes the most prominent thing you can smell.

Starts off a little sweet with some roasted character, then comes the mint. Man oh man, the mint is pretty powerful in this one. I would like a little more substance in the roast to compliment what it is they are doing with the mint, it seems a little off-balance. It doesn't taste bad, but it isn't something that necessarily draws me back for more. It leaves a nice flavor on your tongue however, almost like an after dinner mint. Really not much going on here. It's a standard tasting stout/porter without much character with a bunch of mint flavor slapped on top. I wish they would have taken the route of complimenting a robust base stout with mint as opposed to making it mostly about the mint.

The mouthfeel is much thinner than I would like for a stout, but the carbonation is good and right where it needs to be. I really think they botched the feel on this one. This beer is begging for a rich mouthfeel to smooth out some of its other deficiencies but it simply does not deliver. Overall an interesting disappointment.

I believe this is a one-off, but who knows for sure, maybe they will brew it again next year. Had this at the tap room of the brewery.
Pours very dark and in the glass shows minimal highlights. Tan head is fairly short lived, but it shows lacing throughout the drink.
Pretty straight up roast and barley aroma with the mint more in the background.
Mint flavor more apparent in the taste. At first it reminded me of a mint oreo. The mint seems to come and go, but it is never dominant or overpowering. Malt dry finish and the hops seem enough to cut any undo sweetness and they make a mild bittering appearance near the end of the drink.
There was a full feel early on with the carbonation taking a lead here. Seemed thinner later, but never too much. Never too rich, but does push it at times. Alcohol seems around the 6% level-if it is over 7% it is nicely hidden.
A decent drink. Having more than one is possible, but three might feel a bit much.
