Beautiful outdoor garden, with marble table, many flowers, and a little mannekin pis. Luckily, it was a really nice day, so we were ablte to go ouside and have a smoke-free area. Table use do be a sewing machine. Great-looking place, but they do not know how to pour a beer--massive amounts of yeast were bobbing about in our glasses! Worth checking out mainly because it is across the street from Pikardin.

Het Groene Dal, as the sign proclaims is a Taverne-Restaurant, located on the outskirts of St. Lievems Houtem. It is on a very narrow winding country lane that leads to Zottegem, our Coach had to drop us off outside, and park elsewhere to return later, much later, as we had a “double-header” planned. For the “Green Valley” is located right opposite the Pikardijn (see BF). Two excellent, very different, bars that appear to feed off each others trade and success.
There are plenty of covered outside drinking areas, enough to even seat a Coach load of 30+ English tourists on our sunny Easter Sunday afternoon visit on 3-31-02. Sit outside with your Orval and enjoy the lovely views of the very smart, well-maintained, beautiful flower gardens, and the well-manicured “carpet-like” lawns with the other imbibers.
Beer List is some 100 strong, with a solid list of favourites that include at least 2 or 3 beers of each of the main styles, so something for everyone, but no surprises. The menu is varied & adventurous, and I had very good reports about the food from others in my drinking party. I had decided to get a couple of beers only here, and to head over the narrow lane to the Pikardijn for my food. Het Groene Dal is the more upmarket of the two establishments. But you must do both of these bars if you visit here.
