Pour a very deep brown color with a tight beige creamy head that settled into a light cap with lacing on the glass.

The aroma is of sweet malt, quite bready. There is a candied orange sweetness with a pine or spruce earthiness. There is a very much a fruitcake aroma to this beer.

The taste is of a pumpernickel bready base. Lots of candied fruit sweetness. Orange and pineapple seem to stand out. Some scorched caramel provides some additional sweetness. Not very hoppy, perhaps a touch of pine.

Moderate to full feel with noticeable carbonation. The beer is sweet but there is enough of an earthy bitterness. A touch sticky in the finish.

The beer captures fruitcake very well but it screams for needed hoppy flavor.

Spices have mellowed out over the course of the last year.. Very nice holiday ale... Hints of spruce and cinnamon and nutmeg and all things Christmas... Really nice edition of this offering from Anchor...

When you pour this beer, it's a nice dark ruby colour, a medium to large tan coloured head with great retention. Once it does recede you get a lot of spotty lacing on the sides of the glass and a nice uneven surface foam on top of the beer. On the nose there's lots of Chocolate malt aromas, mild roastyness and some caramel. I'd say it's pretty Christmassy so far! When you taste this beer, initially you get a strange mint flavour which is actually quite nice and refreshing, after this Vanilla and a touch of Fruity Fig like flavours. After this the Roasted and Chocolate malts kick in, ending with a bitter Hoppy finish. This beer feels extremely smooth and ends with a medium-sweet finish with a touch of bitterness. This year's one really is balanced and great, with a superb malty backing.

The 2013 version, but not bought that long ago.

Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a Unibroue stemmed flute

a; Clear very dark ruby to copper, inch and a half thick tan head receded to rocky surface foam and lots of spotty lacing.

s: Fruit cup, mainly pear.

t: Medium fruit up front to a mildish degree, followed by a significant hop bite. Bitterness lingers at the sides of the tongue at first like a moderate IPA. Fruity finish. Later slight smoke and ripe dark fruit notes emerge.

m; Light to medium, pretty good body, some carbonation tingle.

o; An unusual and seemingly complex holiday brew. Would like to try this with a grilled steak!

Extremely dark, mahogany edges in the light... slight head. Bit of chocolate, anise, and spice on the nose. Some funny pine and spicy flavors. Dry and thin on the palate. I drank it. It was interesting. Not sure I liked it all that much. Too far out there. Heard 2013 was quite good. Resounding ok.
