12oz bottles picked up at the COOP and at Brewer's Haven... This one was enjoyed from my Cigar City Teku.. 1" off white head... fantastic lacing atop a clear amber brew.

Nose shows fruity hoppiness with a pretty bigger than expected maltiness that weighs heavier toward the toasty side of things... still a nice pithy grapefruity hoppy bitterness comes through on the finish.

The flavor is pretty standard but with absolutely no flaws.. great clean bitterness with equally clean malts.. hops are big floral and grassy.. the finish shows hints of pithy citrus.. something else in the finish reminds me of tannic black tea, weird but still appreciated... mineral notes? Beyond my feeble palate.

Great body and bubble... no complaints.

Even 10 years ago, this would have been in the upper echelon of hoppy beers. I appreciate Anchor's resilience.. I can't think of anybody else keeping things square.

Picked this up at Carnivores mixed and matched for $2.50. Found it quite interesting since their other beers are great especially their barleywine.

A - Pours a rather hazy amber brown very dark for the style. Head is excellent a solid inch that pulls back to great lacing.
S - Smell is musty like old cardboard sort of English IPA with tea leaves. Hops come off herbal and medicinal which I don't enjoy. Smells rather dank. I sip.
T - Well its definitely hoppy a long herbal bitterness that clings to the palate. Musty wet malts and some herbal tea flavors highlight. Not that great.
M - Medium bodied its really showing its ABV. Kind smooth but flavors are not wow worthy.

Overally I can tell its well crafted but I don't really love english IPA's. Thankfully it got easier to drink as it went on so it's not worth a drain pour!

355ml bottle. Huh, silly me, thinking that an elephant on the label of an IPA had something to do with the 'India' part of this beer style's name.

This beer pours a clear, glassy medium bronzed amber hue, with three fingers of puffy, frothy, and rocky off-white head, which leaves some dense, gnarled tree branch lace around the glass as it gradually recedes.

It smells of musky, dank pine resin, earthy yeast, acrid, somewhat musty orchard fruit, bready caramel malt, and further leafy, weedy hops. The taste is gritty, lightly toasted caramel malt, brown bread, weirdly phenolic and floral yeast, an edgy pine needle and bitter leafy hoppiness, weak stale citrus fruit, a pithy generic nuttiness, and a wet stoney flintiness.

The carbonation is fairly active in its tense, tightly-held frothiness, the body a so-so medium weight, and not really smooth, but hardly easy to explain why not, either. It finishes off-dry, I guess, the mixed flora and citrus bitterness not convincing me of anything, really, not with that strange yeasty malt abounding (steam beer house flavour should have absolutely zero influence on an IPA's bearing, IMHO).

Meh. Arguing about whether this is more English or American in orientation could surely fill up a whole lot of time, sure, but in the end, it's merely a weak-sauce blend of the both, pushed through Anchor's left-field filter, one who's West Coast credentials I have, and still duly question. Not a particularly enjoyable IPA, or beer, for that matter.

America's most symbolic craft brewer has come out with what is arguably the American craft beer drinkers favorite style; the IPA. Anchor also created a label which fits well for the beer while holding onto Anchor's design. 12 ounces, on to the beer:

Hardly pale, as this beer has a sharp reddish color with hues of orange. On top rests a half-inch of foam with solid retention while leaving some strokes of lace. The aroma is okay, light with the firepower, but solid with floral, esters, and vague citrus notes. It smells English to me. It tastes English to me as well. Nothing wrong with that, but don't expect a throwdown of hops. Neutral is the malt, which gives the beer a dry biscuit character. Vague fruitiness, a gentle kick of hops which leave themselves around in the aftertaste.

In 1975, this would have been revolutionary in the US. In 2014, this could be seen as a "throwback" before modern American IPA's become hard hitting beers. If you like a softer beer with a push of hops, Anchor IPA wouldn't be a bad choice.

Poured from a "stubby" 12oz. bottle into a standard pint glass.
Cloudy amber in color with a nice, stout head of bone-white foam.
Aroma-Toasted malt, herbal hop note
Taste-Toasted malt, mint leaf, herbal, earthy hops. An "English" feel to this IPA in my opinion. Full of flavor and character, with hops providing balance and subtlety instead of being prominently showcased. A perfect "food beer" for spicy fare.

12oz into SN IPA Glass

Clear amber red with a thick, foamy, bubbly off white head.

Citrusy, fruity, lightly resiny. A unique and tasty blend, though this bottle may have been a bit past its prime.

Medium bodied, foamy carbonation

As stated above, a well done beer, nothing particularly outstanding in the big picture though.
