A: Really clear and amber (reminds me more of a Red Ale not as much as an IPA). Nice foamy head that lingers nicely.

S: Has that rich malty Anchor smell. Subtly hop aroma, slight grapefruit/pine but not really that much besides the malty backbone.

T: Firm bitterness in the beginning. Caramel and bready backbone upfront with some fruitiness but nothing too defining, maybe some orange peel and grapefruit. Again has that Anchor taste to it.

M: A tad sweet, but over feels pretty nice on the tongue.

O: It doesn't really remind me too much of an American IPA, but more of an English style. A decent IPA, but not one I would always seek after.

A: The beer is clear amber in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high frothy off white head that gradually died down, leaving a thin head on the surface, a collar around the edge, and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of toasted malts are present in the nose along with notes of caramel malts.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste is dominated by flavors of toasted and caramel malts. Hints of pine resin hops are noticeable towards the finish, and these contribute a light amount of bitterness and mask any malty sweetness.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. No crispness is perceptible.
O: This beer is quite malty, enough to the degree where I would classify this as being an English IPA. Nonetheless, it is rather drinkable considering the amount of maltiness.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep golden brown color, with a large off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick but spotty lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains caramelized malts, floral hops and some citrus.

T: The taste starts out with some sweetness from flavors of caramel and citrus. Then some earthy hops bitterness comes in but the presence is rather subdued for the style. The malt character is hearty and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is clean.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, good representation of style, this is a solid beer to drink for a while if you want a less harsh IPA.

12 oz bottle. Pours golden copper with a huge creamy off-white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is odd - leathery plasticky malts with some sweet caramel, green apple and some floral perfumey hops.

The flavor is sweet crystal malts with some odd apple fruit and a lot of floral hops. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, I didn't care for this - green apple and floral perfumey hops.

12 ounce bottle

Old school brand, delivers with this tasty and quality IPA/pale

Shimmering auburn, lazy and looser lite khaki head, leaves respectable low lace on the glass.

On the nose I first get some caramel, then resiny hops.

Flavorful brew with mellow waves of caramel malts with dark bread. Hops in the middle and finish, grapefruit, more mellow resins. Light smoke, lime and some dark toast in the finish.

Enjoyable and quite easy drinking. IPA on the balanced side. Worth a try.

Anchor IPA served from a bottle with no freshness date. Anchor claims to have revived the original IPA style and reproduced a microbrew IPA in 1975 as "americas original microbrewery". The brew pours a dark copper with very frothy large head. Very mild hop aroma. The beer has an initial bitter flavor with only faint hints of hops, more malt than expected, and finishes with the distinct taste of water. Overall just a very mild table beer that has no distinguishable enjoyable attributes besides being easy to drink. We all know anchor has the means and market to create another knockout beer without compromising drinkability. So my question is why don't they try? Why make a mediocre IPA in such a saturated west coast market? This beer is pedestrian and forgettable, do not waste your time.

This beer really showcases big hop spiciness - drink it young. I am drinking a bottle that is less than a month old. Anchor's website translates the date code.
Nose: spicy hops especially mint and pine over malt.
Pours bright amber with an orange tint under a very finely bubbled 2" persistent foam cap. Lacy
Palate: Very malty, spicy and fruity (light fruits, citrus), some caramel to toffee with a touch of hop astringency on the finish.
Medium body, medium high carbonation, very drinkable.
