Anchor Saison™ Spring Ale is a traditional Belgian-style saison with a California twist. The distinctiveness of roasted Belgian wheat malt is enhanced by the peppery, clove-like flavors of a locally cultured saison-style yeast. And, for this release, we chose three California ingredients—lemongrass, lemon peel, and ginger—whose synergy adds a tangy crispness and herbal spiciness to this sharply refreshing, uniquely Californian saison.

Appearance: Amber orange with a quickly disappearing head and noticeable carbonation. Not much in the way of lacing.

Smell: Rainwater and lemon. Dank, almost as if someone made a pitcher of lemonade out of a watering trough.

Taste: Lemon, lemongrass, ginger, clove and banana.

Mouthfeel: On the thicker side of medium bodied. The lemony flavor sticks around, coating your mouth and tongue with it’s aftertaste.

The Verdict: Different. Anchor continues to underwhelm me with their brews. This one isn’t horrible, but it does nothing to endear me to the brand. Worth trying once, and that’s about it. (608 characters)

Standard Anchor bowling pin bottle poured into a New Belgium globe glass. Pour is clear and deep golden/light amber with a half inch of short lived foam. Nose is spicy and accompanied by a peppery and floral hop presence which expands with warming.

Taste follows the appearance with a spritzy spice and a light caramel sweetness which is enhanced, to my chagrin, by the light carbonation on the delivery. This makes the beer come across in feel as a bit too rich as to my preferences to the style. Touch of lemon on the taste when agiatated but this beer largely falls flat on its heels. Needs more carbonation as it stands but even that would only go so far.

Liking the recent preponderence of saison style beers but find this one a bit flat and sweet. (756 characters)

Served in a Lagunitas mason jar.

Not sure if Spring has yet sprung, but I never was one for seasonal sticklers. This stuff pours a mostly clear brass topped by a finger of lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises candied lemon peel, a pinch of black pepper, light cereal grains, and a bit of basic Belgian yeast character. The taste leads with yeast-layered cereal, then quickly shifts to some lemon rind (not as sweet as in the smell), and then on hops the bite of grassily-bitter hops. The end combination of all of this ends up being a grassy ball of lemon rind with a twinge of soap on the back end. Harumph. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a sorta/kinda drying finish. Overall, this saison just didn't do it for me at all. The addition of lemon wasn't necessarily what tanked things, but the hops combined with the lemon certainly did. Boo this stuff. (902 characters)

Gold to light brown in color with excellent clarity. A fingernail of off white head covers most of the top. Aroma of clove is all I get in the one note nose. I taste clove initially and then a hint of biscuity malt that is quickly drowned out by a massive amount of clove. The mouth is heavily carbonated. (309 characters)

L: Brilliant gold under a 2” dream colored foam cap
S: Several kinds of lemon arromas with ginger in the background. No funk.
T: Starts with big lemon flavors and then alternates with ginger with biscuit in the background and a light touch of hops on the finish. Light sweetness with some tart and bitter on the finish.
F: Creamy medium light body, mediun high carbonation.
O: a very easy to drink summer beer. (416 characters)

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours a bright copper orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Big three finger off white head which slowly recedes into a thin patchy layer.

Smell: A fruity and spicy yeast driven aroma with hints of citrus fruit and spices. Belgian yeast with farmhouse funk and spice hints of clove, pepper, ginger, and slight coriander. Citrus fruit hints of lemon zest and orange. Pale malt with hints of wheat, straw, biscuit, and cracker. Also some hints of floral and spicy hops. A pretty solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a nicely fruity and spicy yeast driven taste with notes of citrus and spice. Belgian yeast with some spice notes of clove, farmhouse funk, pepper, ginger, and light coriander. Zesty citrus fruit notes of lemon and orange. Pale malt with some notes of straw, wheat, biscuit, and cracker. Subtle floral and grassy hop presence. A pretty nice crisp taste.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with a medium to high level of carbonation. Crisp, smooth, and drying on the finish.

Overall: A pretty nice zesty take on a Saison. Good citrus and spice notes. (1,130 characters)

Floral-fruity-yeasty-bready aroma.
The flavor is spicy (mainly ginger), mildly bitter and lightly floral including some lemongrass.

12oz bottle, the latest Anchor seasonal to make it up here, north of 49, where spring is just starting to feel like it's gonna stick. Yeah, right.

This beer pours a clear, medium copper amber hue, with one chubby finger of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly off-white head, which leaves some low-lying sea cliff lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells of zesty Belgian yeast, peppery lemon, earthy ginger, bready and doughy pale malt, and herbal, leafy, and grassy hops. The taste is bready, grainy pale and caramel malt, lemongrass, mildly spicy ginger, white pepper, subdued earthy yeast, and more peppy herbal and leafy hops.

The carbonation is rather engaging with its well-balanced fizzy and frothy manifestations, the body a sturdy medium weight, and kind of too tight to be deemed particularly smooth. It finishes off-dry, the underlying malt keepin' 'er between the ditches, while the various guest ingredients mill about, looking for a place to happen.

One of the best brews that I've ever had from Anchor - I suppose all the extra saison complexity more or less obfuscates the house yeast character for which I've developed a certain distaste. Anyways, well-made, tasty, and fresh-seeming (not to mention the AWOL, near 15-proof booze), a pleasant choice for the changing of the seasons. (1,317 characters)

Too much toasty bread crust malt, smells unpleasant. Spicy saison yeast character is too subtle. (96 characters)

Pours a finger and half of head on a clear straw colored body.
The aroma is quite fruit forward with banana and apricot dominant.
The taste starts with a mild apricot sweet note and then has a mild pine and grapefruit bitterness. Descent balance.
The texture is crisp, a bit too fizzy though.
It's enjoyable enough. (315 characters)
