Pours a dark honey color bordering on burnt orange with ruby highlights and an ample tan head to match. The aroma is a pleasing combination of sweet malt and crisp hop working in harmony. The flavors here are huge and unabashed. A sweet, toasted, almost bock-like malt lays the foundation (brown sugar comes to mind). This is accompanied by just enough hop flavor to keep the sweetness from getting out of control. Raisin is easily ascertainable. Nutty flavors are also present, as is a hint of chocolate that manages to sneak through the boozy fog that asserts itself on the back end, along with a more noticeable hop bitterness. Another reviewer noted cinammon, and while I wouldn't have identified it myself, I can recognize it in retrospect. There's more than enough going on here to keep your tastebuds interested for the entire glass. The alcoholic taste may be a little abrasive for some, but it doesn't seem out of place amidst the other bold flavors. I have neglible experience with barleywines, but I like what I'm seeing here from Anchor. I'd go so far as to say this is one of their best brews, easily better than their more widely acclaimed offerings. Definitely worth trying if you've never had.

Poured from the bottle into a pint glass.
Review from notes: February 7th, 2014.
A: Amber with off-white head which quickly disappears.
S: Citrus; lemon with slight hop aroma.
T: Somewhat bitter and boozy. It gets better as I drink.
M: Interesting. Slick and thick.
O: This is my first taste of this style. It's pretty interesting. The only negative with this brew is that it is expensive around here, around $3 a bottle.
