12 oz. bottle poured into a Burley Oak snifter (8LB (or 8L8), so it is from 7/2/08 or 7/28/13, but I feel like those can't be right).
A: Nice dark amber brown with a slight head and a fair amount of sediment in suspension along the bottom.
S: Sweet roasted malts, that's all I got here.
T: Quite sweet, almost like licorice with an alcoholic tinge to it. I get no hops in there at all. If they are there, then they are melded heavily by the malts and taste odd, with a bit of spice that tastes a bit like cinnamon, nutmeg or cloves. It has a weird aftertaste, its not sweet but a weird kind of spice.
M: Very smooth with a nice massage-y slight carbonation that tickles the tongue.
O: Not bad, but not my cup of tea for a barleywine. The sweetness and spice all taste a bit odd. It's not super sweet, but like a sticky spicy (not hot) sweetness.

Had on-tap at Thirsty Monk Asheville. Served in a Lagunitas pint glass.
A- Pours a reddish dark amber with a 1/2 inch light tan had that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a mostly full sheet of surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a jagged ring behind.
S- Sweet smelling with some notes of dark fruit, caramel and a touch of brown sugar.
T- Big hits of Bready malt, booze and more dark fruit. Everything melds together to make for a drinkable barleywine, there's just not a lot of complexity. Bitter aftertaste.
M- Somewhat syrupy with medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the fuller side.
O- Definitely a sweeter barleywine with a lot of residual sugars but still quite drinkable if not very complex.
