Pours a dark, semi-translucent brown. No real head.

Smells like slightly soured (??) malt with some coffee notes and a bit of sweet malt. The sour aroma is strange.

Thankfully, the sour doesn't carry over MUCH to the flavor, but it's still there. Kind of a harsh, astringent slightly sour/sweet flavor overlaid on coffee, sweet malt, some brown sugar, and a bit of of bitterness.

Would be a very good bock if not for that off-note. Decently thick. Not much carbonation.

"'Bock beer', released in celebration of the coming of spring, is an ancient and mysterious part of the brewing tradition. Over time, the term 'bock' has come to mean a beer darker and heartier than the brewery's 'regular' brew. We hope you will find Anchor Bock to be a rich and flavorful addition to our other offerings." Brewed in the style of a German Bock beer. Available as a spring seasonal in 12 oz. bottled 6 packs and on draft. The 2014 release is reportedly the grand finale release of this beer.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a pint glass. Served above 47º Fahrenheit.

Anchor Bock pours a frothy crisp head of a cocoa-white tone over a very deep brown body with maple highlights and high clarity. Carbonation is plentiful and lively, retention is average and lacing is light and spotty. The aroma is chock full of nutty, biscuity, slightly chocolatey malt, hops are slightly spicy and herbal with a mild perceived bitterness. The flavor is much the same, with a slick, biscuity german and grainy caramel malt body and some citrus peel notes, a pinch of spicy hops. Texture is slick and faintly creamy, lightly grainy, mildly dry with a sharp, bold carbonation that makes for a crisp mouthfeel. The body is medium for the style and medium overall. The alcohol presence is mild, with some slight malt graininess that is common with the style. Overall Anchor Bock Beer falls right in the middle for me. I don't usually have Bock beers that tend to be this forward on the hop profile, but its a welcome variation. The flavors are enjoyable and the mouthfeel a bit buzzy. Anchor Bock Beer's imminent retirement is not so much a testament to the success or failure of the beer itself but rather the ever changing demands of the craft beer drinker, often opting for maltier, hoppier and more unique flavor to their beer. Anchor Bock is one of the more flavorful Bock beers I have had and does a better job then most when dealing with traditional German styles of putting an American twist on things. Reasonably priced, I see this being a great fall beer.

Compliments of BIF 16.

Appearance: Pours a dark, cloudy brown with ruby edging. A thick sudsy tan head develops.

Smell: Raisins, molasses, a touch of alcohol, and carmel notes on the nose.

Taste: Suprisingly dry...carmel with a strong bready base. Wheat and carmel with a roasty dry taste on the palate. The smell made me think this would be sweeter. Kind of leaves you wishing for more out of this beer.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and slightly creamy.

Drinkability: May have been better fresh. No off flavors or alcohol noted. Nice but there are better examples out there. Probably wouldn't consider re-visiting.
