Pour from a bottle, into a glass.

Appearance was impressive. The beer looks thick! Lots of tan head, and deep brownish red color. My fiancé thought I was drinking a soda.

Smell was piney, malty and spicy.

Taste again was very pine-like. With the usual spices you would expect in a winter beer. Tons of flavor in this one, balanced with a nice bitter flavor.

Mouth feel was thick, and heavy, but still very drinkable. This is a must have around my Christmas table!

12 oz. bottle, with a more than obvious vintage date. Code on the back label reads 703. Vintage 2007, making this the third oldest beer I've ever drank, behind the 2006 and 2005 vintages of this beer.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter.

A - Pours a half finger of chocolate tan head on top of an extremely dark mahogany colored body with some ruby highlights. Almost opaque in the glass. Nice frothy head when given a good swirl, with some nice thin tan lacing. Looks pretty nice.

S - Smell is of creamy caramel, woody earthiness, cloves, chocolate malt, maybe a hint of zesty ginger, cherry-vanilla, some light herbal spice rack notes, and some dark fruit like dates, figs, and raisins.

T - Taste is of chocolate malt / amber malt / red malt, tea leaves, caramel sweetness, dried earthiness, some herbal / woody tree bark type taste, cola, dried grass, some cocoa / pine bitterness, and some lightly vinous cherry / raisin. Chocolate malt seems to take the lead here, this type around.

M - Feel is fairly smooth & creamy. Finish is mostly clean and dry, with a bit of stickiness, some powdery cocoa bitterness, and some bitter herbal earthiness on the palate. Feel is more full and not as watery as past vintages that I've tried.

Overall, another different and unique holiday vintage from Anchor. Much more noticeable chocolate malt presence this time around which I found delightful. I look forward to more as these continue to impress me. In all, I'd say this vintage has held up well, and will continue to enjoy the ride for many more years to come.

Many thanks to DING for the chance to taste this one- the first in a vertical that he kindly sent me last week. As I write this, I think about how ironic it is to be posting a review within a site that treated him very poorly and unfairly. Sorry Ding, this is where I review for now until I figure out something better or get off my ass and make a blog or something. Here we go:

Poured into brooklyn tulip from bottle. Pours a very thick and terrifically dark red/brown color. I noted the viscosity of this pour as it came out of the bottle. Great looking beer, and I'm ashamed to say that this may be the first time to ever have this one. Smell- so complex. I get port wine, chocolate dark fruits, some oxidation, and a weird beef jerky funky aroma. There is some sort of salty aroma. Some of this may sound bad, but its very complex and interesting. I'm thinking the port wine aroma is the dominant one. Taste- utterly bizarre. I get a watery backbone, some of that port/cognac flavor I detected on the aroma, but then it gets bizarre and a little unpleasant. That metallic/oxidized flavor hits me, as does the smoky/salty/beef like flavor. This is an interesting example of what happens to some beers over time (one would assume, because I have not had it fresh yet), but its a cautionary tale. I'll report back the next time I try another vintage for comparison notes.
