One of Anchor's originals pours black with the faintest ruby highlights, nut only when purposely held to the light. The head is impressive, as is the retention and lace.
The nose definitely indicates a different character than the black abyss that I get visually. It's soft, without bitterness, or very much roasty aromas at all. Toffee, light chocolate, and vague ripened fruit aromas are about all I can decipher. There's a dash of metallic twang too, that keeps below impressed.
Flavor makes up for the rather lack-luster aroma. The chocolate malts add a definite sweetness, yet include the roasted flavor the nose is missing. Subtle licorice, banana, and pepper make brief cameos before the slightly bitter roasted finish takes hold.
It's very easy to drink, remarkably easy in fact. It's not thin, but it has just the right slickness to slide down effortlessly. The carbonation is right on, as well as the semi-dry finish.
It's not the best porter I've had, but it's solid, and would make an excellent session beer. It's easy, smooth, and satisfying.

A - dark brown, near black, creamy tan head, patching lacing
S - coffee, molasses, caramel, black malts, candied sugars
T - roasted malt, coffee, sweetness from some dark fruits like figs and dates, molasses, slight bitterness
M - medium to full bodied, some carbonation, chewy, creamy
O - Really great porter. Great combination and balance between the smell and taste from the roasted malt malts to the sweet molasses/caramel and dark fruits. Would certainly drink again,
