Notes/Commercial Description:
The champagne-like bubbles, distinctive hop bouquet, and balanced character of Liberty Ale® revives centuries-old ale brewing traditions that are now more relevant than ever. First introduced in 1975, Liberty Ale® is brewed strictly according to traditional craft brewing methods, and uses only natural ingredients — pale malted barley, fresh whole-cone Cascade hops and a special top-fermenting yeast, and water.

The yeast used during fermentation produces many of Liberty Ale's subtle flavors and characteristics. A natural process called "bunging" creates gentle carbonation, and the practice of dry hopping (adding fresh hops to the brew during aging), revived by Anchor, creates its unique aroma.

Liberty Ale® was first brewed to celebrate the bicentennial of Paul Revere’s historic ride. As the first modern American IPA brewed after prohibition and the first modern American single-hop ale and dry-hopped ale, Anchor’s Liberty Ale® is the original craft brewed ale and the historic beer that started a revolution.

For me, Anchor Liberty represents the perfection of Anchor Steam. I find the original Anchor Steam to be pleasant but a little bland and far too citrusy.

Anchor Liberty borrows the yeast profile and depth of Anchor Steam but reduces the citrus and hops things up. It is nowhere near as sweet and sour as AS, and it really makes for a wonderful IPA. The result is a malty American IPA that is very different from the standard west-coast IPA offerings, which are so dear to our hearts. I agree with other reviewers, that it comes across as more of an APA than an IPA.

A real gem of an American beer. If you love or once loved Anchor Steam, then you've got to track down Anchor Liberty.

Bottle to glass

Appearance - Hazy yellowish, golden colour with a white head

Smell - Citrus heavy, malts also come through, some grassy notes as well

Taste - Citrus taste that is really well balanced with the malts. Hops are not in you're face at all

Overall - I would consider more an APA than an IPA but it is a great beer

33 cl bottle (bb 11 2015) into a tulip. Clear golden, tiny head, little lacing. Fresh smell has malts and fruity hops with a hint of grass. Crisp malty taste is followed by fruity hops, dry fruity aftertaste with mild bitterness. Medium body, pleasant smooth carbonation, creamy mouthfeel. Overall a fresh and pleasant ale. Would have again.
