A 355ml bottle with a BB of July 2014. Purchased a while back from Trembling Madness in York, and stored in my garage. Described on the label as a tribute to Gottlieb Brekle, the founder of the original Anchor brewery in the 1850s.

Poured into a tulip pint glass. Bottle conditioned. A deep reddish-brown hue with medium carbonation. Yields a large head of creamy beige foam that lasts for a few minutes before reducing to a surface layer. Aroma of grainy caramel malt with hints of roasted malt, brown sugar, faint chocolate, stewed leaves and earthy yeast. Somewhat sweet, with a twinge of harsh cardboard in the background.

Tastes of subtle roasted malt with a dry finish. Notes of grain, caramel/toffee, brown sugar, mild chocolate, stewed leaves, harsh cardboard and faint earthy yeast. Possesses a slight malty sweetness followed by an acrid bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with pleasant carbonation and decent body for the style. Could perhaps be a tad thicker. Rather astringent, with an aftertaste of harsh cardboard, stewed leaves and mild caramel malt.

OK, though nothing special. To be fair, I've never been particularly enamoured of brown ales. This one looks nice, with a lovely colour when held to the light. However the aroma and flavour, while malty, are quite bland and plagued by an undesirable harshness. Body is par for the course. It meets expectations, though the taste could be cleaner and fresher. Worth trying, but no need to seek it out.

This is malt perfection. Exactly what I look for in a brown ale-rich, malty, balanced with hop bitterness that cuts down on the sweetness, but is not the main presence. Don't even consider Newcastle, this is the way to go. I won't even pair it with food because it is so good I wouldn't want any other flavors to interfere with it.

Brekle’s brown ale (3.5, 3.75, 4, 4, 3.75)Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a medium brown color with a billowy tan colored head. The head has a nice level of retention, slowly fading to leave a bit of streaky lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell- The aroma of the beer is quite heavy of a sweet caramel and toffee aroma mixed with some light aromas of a roasted malt nature. Along with these aromas are some light nutty and chocolate aromas as well as a little bit of an earthy and herbal smell.
Taste – The taste begins with a sweet caramel and toffee flavor with a smooth roasted malt flavor. These flavors create a base for the beer lasting to the very end. Along with these flavors so too comes some notes chocolate and some light hop flavors of pine and a little bit of earth. With a light nut that joins the taste at the very end one, is left with a smooth, moderately roasted, and sweet flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the slightly thicker and creamier side for a beer of only 6% abv. with a carbonation level that is slightly low. The thicker feel of the brew in combo with the lower carbonation give the beer a nice creamy feel and are great for the mix of roast, sweet, and nut flavors.

Overall – A very enjoyable brown ale with a nice sweet roasted flavor. Quite enjoyable.
