Notes/Commercial Description:
BigLeaf Maple Autumn Red is a quaffable, well-balanced red ale with character. Its malty complexity and coppery color come from a combination of two caramel malts, pale malt, and a hint of maple syrup. To complement these flavors, we used three additions of Nelson Sauvin hops in the brewkettle and a unique blend of Nelson Sauvin, Citra, and Cascade for dry hopping. The result is a distinctive fall seasonal with extraordinary depth and intriguing aroma.

Pours a brilliant reddish amber with a thick, frothy head that dissipates very slowly, leaving sheets of frilly lacing.

Citrus and tropical fruit dominate the initial aroma, with resin and pine adding contrast. Notes of grapefruit, mango, and kiwi ate evident. Malt is a slightly nutty afterthought. Maple surfaces after hop aroma fades.

Flavor is somewhat off. There's an initial banana ester note, followed by resin and tropical fruit, finishing fairly bitter and harsh. Toasted, nutty malt surfaces mid palate, but is dominated by the hop barrage. Needless to say, maple flavor is tough to find. Floral hops emerge add it warms, along with a soapy character.

Body is thin, with moderate carbonation and a fair amount of alcohol warmth.

Great aroma, albeit overdone for the style. Think there may be some fermentation issues. The harsh finish was offputting, as well. Too bitter for my palate.

Nice red ale of copper/orange color. It makes a really nice foam.
Smell is hoppy and grassy, but also sweet.
The taste is similar and you can feel quite well the malts; it's not easy to feel the maple syrup here, it's like a different kind of sweetness. Aftertaste is quite bitter, making a nice contrast.
Mouthfeel is of medium body but nice carbonation.
I wonder why this beer is just a bit cloying (and that ain't good!)
Great beer this one, wonder if Anchor could brew it with more maple syrup..
