Notes/Commercial Description:
BigLeaf Maple Autumn Red is a quaffable, well-balanced red ale with character. Its malty complexity and coppery color come from a combination of two caramel malts, pale malt, and a hint of maple syrup. To complement these flavors, we used three additions of Nelson Sauvin hops in the brewkettle and a unique blend of Nelson Sauvin, Citra, and Cascade for dry hopping. The result is a distinctive fall seasonal with extraordinary depth and intriguing aroma.

Pours a red/amber with a nice foamy khaki head and good lacing. Aroma offers some maple syrup, caramel, grapes, earthy,. Flavor is pretty similar with the earthy finish providing a touch of bitterness to it. A medium bodied, active mouthfeel. Overall, an alright brew here. I was really excited to try this, as an amber ale hopped with (amongst others) nelson sauvin hops sounded great to me. The addition of maple syrup seemed interesting and appealing too. Ended up not coming close to meeting my expectations. Not a bad beer, but not a beer that I have much need to drink again. Glad I only purchased a single of this, worth the purchase but not worth another.

Poured into a Belgian style glass. First I notice how beautiful of a color it is regardless of the tiny amount of foam. Second impressions are that it has a clean crisp maple smell complimented by rather harsh metallic nails-dipped-in-syrup taste. Its of medium viscosity giving it an average mouthfeel. The aftertaste is that of rusty maple bark.

Nice red ale of copper/orange color. It makes a really nice foam.
Smell is hoppy and grassy, but also sweet.
The taste is similar and you can feel quite well the malts; it's not easy to feel the maple syrup here, it's like a different kind of sweetness. Aftertaste is quite bitter, making a nice contrast.
Mouthfeel is of medium body but nice carbonation.
I wonder why this beer is just a bit cloying (and that ain't good!)
Great beer this one, wonder if Anchor could brew it with more maple syrup..
