Notes/Commercial Description:
BigLeaf Maple Autumn Red is a quaffable, well-balanced red ale with character. Its malty complexity and coppery color come from a combination of two caramel malts, pale malt, and a hint of maple syrup. To complement these flavors, we used three additions of Nelson Sauvin hops in the brewkettle and a unique blend of Nelson Sauvin, Citra, and Cascade for dry hopping. The result is a distinctive fall seasonal with extraordinary depth and intriguing aroma.

Found my notes from this beer when I was going back through my notebook. Enjoyed it way back on 10/6/2013 out of a 12 oz brown bottle with that distinctive Anchor Brewing silhouette. Didn't seem to write down a bottling or freshness date, but this is from the 2013 release, so it should be well within it's freshness threshold (freshold?). Poured into a 16 oz standard tumbler glass.

Appearance - Pours a beautiful tawny reddish hue that is mostly translucent. Clear enough to see the label through the liquid, but not completely clear, as there seems to be a slight haze. Ample traces of carbonation rise up to the two-finger head that is toasted white in color. Retention is excellent, with the head sticking around for quite awhile as significant pocking begins to form across the surface of the foam. Lacing is slightly sticky and sparse, but leaves spots as I drink it down.

Smell - Ample presence of caramel and robust malty profile provides notes of sweetness and breadiness as the primary components of this beer. There is some nice aromatic hoppiness that compliments that base with hints of pine resin and even some fruitiness as well. But don't get me wrong--the sweet grain rules the day here.

Taste - Again, there is a hint at some fruitiness with some citric notes along with nectarine, but the malt base is still the front and center of this beer. Sweetness of maple syrup, candied walnuts, and caramel malts are all present, but it is anything but overpoweringly sweet. Very balanced and a nice finish of more pine and herbal notes come through at the end to add a hint of depth.

Mouthfeel - Medium-to-light bodied, with moderate carbonation and a semi-sweet finish.

Overall, a solid amber ale. One that I'm happy to have tried, but that I will probably not go out of my way to procure again. There are other offerings that I would likely choose first. I will say that it's a truly beautiful looking beer, but then many amber ales are, to my eye, and as much as I love looking at a beer, I love smelling and drinking it more.
