Trying batch 1 and 2 together. Pours black with a tiny bit of brown around the edges. Medium light brown head. Some lacing, good retention for a sour. The first batch has a mild aroma with an acidic berry edge, some soured roast fruitiness. Batch 2 has a lot more berry character and sweetness. It generally comes together better with more depth and complexity, adding in more chocolate and some coffee. Taste is similar for both versions. Batch 1 is pretty acetic and sour but lacks the richer stout and berry flavors of batch 2. The second batch has a wonderful mix of chocolate, roast, berries and sour. It all works together much better than I expected. Very tasty stuff. Mouthfeel is thin for batch 1 but fuller and fairly smooth for batch 2. The second batch us clearly superior at this point and is probably the best dark sour that I've tried.

A: Thick, velvety, black with a slight purplish hue.

S: Coffee and vinegar. The sour smell is quite strong with this one.

T: First a wave of espresso followed by rich, fresh berries, and then the lactic sourness kicks in. I'm not sure if the souring was intentional but it plays perfectly with the other beautiful flavors in this beer.

M: Velvet with a mildly puckering finish.

O: Wonderful. Having not been blown away by what I had on tap at Sante Adairius, I was preparing to be underwhelmed by this. Apparently the hype is well deserved; this Adjunct Professor is an excellent brew.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Black with a hint of transparency at the edges. Nice khaki head. Good retention.

Smell - Fruity, dark roast. Some chocolate. I'm not familiar with boysenberry, so I can't specify the fruit aroma. Acidic aroma.

Taste - Much more fruity. Roasty coffee. Dark chocolate. Bright tart fruits, but I still don't know if it's legitimate boysenberry. A bit chalky in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Tart more than sour. Flavorful, medium body, well carbonated.

Overall - Tough call on this one. The flavors all seem to be in perfect balance with each other, but I just don't know if I want some of these flavors together.
