500mL bottle

I never mention bitterness in my reviews, my bitterness taste buds are ridiculously under-

APPEARANCE : Typical porter looks. Deep dark brown. Head is mocha, doesn't rise to more than average thickness, drops at an average speed leaving average lacing. Just what you'd expect without being incredible. Perfectly fine.

SMELL : First nose is very weak, but contains mostly traces of coffee and some vegetal hints - can't tell if those come from the chicorium used in the brewing process. Second nose is almost equally weak, but brings out some precision to the notes of coffee by adding a definite malt undertone. Vegetal is also more present, but its source is still undistinguishable. Third nose has the vegetal take up more room than the malt profile. Still can't tell if it's hops or chicorium.

TASTE : Light coffee, vegetal, some malty caramel. I think I can pretty clearly see where the chicorium is hiding in the mix. Pretty well integrated.

MOUTHFEEL : Nothing too rich, but definitely has a higher than average gravity, though not by much.

OVERALL : Very light but surprisingly pleasing. There is some definite depth in here but it's very subtle, almost muted down. This is a very discreet porter, but definitely not a bad one. In a world of increasingly over-the-top-blow-your-taste-buds-to-hell beers, this is a very, very welcome product. Because of this, I'm cranking its score some.

Bottle: Poured a clear deep brown color ale with a large enough head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of nice sweet chocolate notes with light roasted malt notes. Taste is also dominated by sweet black chocolates notes with nice creamy undertones. Body is light for style with good carbonation. Very enjoyable beer with great drinkability and just enough complexity.

Huge thanks to ricochet173 for providing this brew in an in-person trade in Montreal.

A: Black coffee in color with a ruby red clear shine and a 1 finger of tan medium frothy head.

S: Mild smell with a subtle coffee scent, milk chocolate and a note of malty ovaltine.

T: Smooth and malty again the flavours are subtle with a lightly roasted coffee, sweet malt milk chocolate and some light smokiness rounds out the flavour. Slightly herbaceous with a taste of juniper is notable.

M: Just a slight hint of carbonation at the end is perfect on this porter with a medium body thats neither too heavy nor too watery.

O: A very drinkable porter that doesn't overwhelm the palette or over compensate with heavy malts or hops. We both note that while at first the smell and flavours are subtle, they create a highly drinkable porter that might pair excellently with late brunch.

The chickory is interesting but perhaps overpowing. That being said, this is a not bad little porter. I do like this beer as I do most of what La Vache Folle has to offer but the bitterness of the chickory just leaves too much of an aftertaste for my personal taste. However, it really does go well with savory meals, especially with slow cooked meats and carmelized vegetables.

Two fingers of frothy and whipped light tan head tops its cola brown body. As it gracefully recedes, fluffy patches of lace are left behind.

Ah, this smells like a dessert. Plenty of rich hazelnut is coated in caramel and milk chocolate. Behind its decadent facade lies softer notes of wood and roast. This is mostly sweet, clean, and rounded.

A big flash of roastiness and spice sets the tone before giving way to sweet and silky milk chocolate. A damp woodiness adds some weight and is met by more roastiness with a sweet edge in the finish. Although the hazelnut isn't as pronounced, it does make itself known throughout. And that with its milky sweetness is the constant base line for this Porter.

Its medium body is laced with a soft dryness and a crisp roasty bite. The sweet silkiness is always there and helps to define its weight. Sure it's a bit higher in alcohol but this sucker is easy to drink.

Charlevoix is one of my favorite breweries out of Quebec and this didn't disappoint. Its hazelnut quality paired with the silky milk chocolate made it very enjoyable for me. I'm glad I got a chance to try it!

Appearance: It has a nice really deep brown color to it with some amber hues shining through. It has a nice creamy beige head that dies down moderately and leaves some nice lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of sweet roasted malts, some nuttiness, caramel and faint coffee.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a sweet roasted malts, some nuttiness, a caramel/mapple syrup sweetness and some coffee.

Mouthfeel: It has a med/high carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavors and aromas.

From a 500 ml bottle to a pint glass.

Pours a dark brown nearly black with a thin one finger head which dissipates quickly leaving a thin film of foam. The smell is mild with coffee and malt tones. The taste is where I feel let down. The chicory is almost overpowering or too harsh. It is quite bitter and a leaves a less than pleasant aftertaste. The carbonation is medium and there is a medium body.

A: One of the best looking porter I've ever seen. As usual for Charlevoix, this beer is simply gorgeous. Perfectly translucid brown color with a big mocha head with tons of retention and lacing. Really good looking.

S: The smell is very faint but what's there to detect is really good. As usual with porters you get a nice amount of smoke which is even more supported by the Chicorée. You get some roasted malts and what I wouldn't be surprised to be maltose. Some brown sugar too.

T: The taste isn't as weak as the smell, but it still not super strong either. You get some nice maltose (pretty sure now, wouldn't be surprising since they also do a milk stout), brown sugar, smoke, leather, pepper and the Chicorée. Really well rounded porter, very very nice stuff.

M: Really good mouhfeel. The problem with most porters is that they seem to be a bit watery but this one is full on creaminess but is not at all heavy. Just the right amount of carbonation too. Really well done.

O: Well, this is a very easy recommendation from me. I fail to see a situation where this beer wouldn't be welcomed. The taste is great and balanced, it is EXTREMELY drinkable and the feel is great. A really good all rounder/regular beer, but nothing extraordinary.
