From BeerAdvocate Magazine #79 (Aug 2013):

We can fully appreciate bottle-conditioned brews, but Candia Road really should tighten up production as this character—or to narrow it down, the yeast—takes over a bit too much. Another case of “yeast gone wild,” the potential is there, though falls way short of what we expected.

ABV: 8.2%

LOOK: Deep amber, hazed, massive head

SMELL: Intensely floral, lots of yeast, toasted grain, faint caramel, exotic fruit, hemp seeds, rose water

TASTE: Juicy hoppiness, faintly dank, slightly biscuity grain, sharp bitterness, chalky yeast, estery, apple skin, astringent; extremely dry, very bitter finish

Poured into a snifter the beer was a hazy dark orange color. There was a fairly small off white head that left a minimal amount of lace.

Mostly a pine aroma, a tiny bit of citrus. Faint sweet malt.

Piney, resiney taste. I thought I could taste some grapefruit. Not sure where the malt went.

A hop-forward beer. I wanted a little more malt presence, and found this to be a difficult DIPA to drink.

Wow, too much foam, man. It's cloudy with a strong amber hue. Reminds me of one of my homebrews.

Musty pine aroma greets the nose. I think I know what's in store.

That pine dose is mirrored in the flavor. Coats the mouth. Just a touch of sweet malt underneath.

Carbonation level is too damn high. A beer that is more head than beer is not a beer.

When it settles down, it's still a decent stab at the style. It just needs a hell lot more refinement.

Interesting....saw this guy at the local coop and having never tried any of their offerings, thought I would give this one a go.

A: pours a cloudy golden orange with a MASSIVE head that absolutely refused to go down. This guy was unbelievably carbonated, noticeable from the moment I cracked the bottle to a resounding hiss. Hmmm...interesting.

S: Not getting much in the way of aroma, but there is some herbal spiciness, and a hint of bready malts. Also, I don't know what C02 smells like, but this might be it. A bit of a chemical scent.

T: Really not getting anything here. Once you get past the biting carbonation, it is a watery mess. I get some spicy herbs, maybe a slight bit of clove, but absolutely nothing in the ballpark of what I would expect from this style. Tastes like a bitter and over-carbonated witbier, or maybe a poorly constructed saison, from the herbal spiciness. Hint of pepper and phenol at the end.

M: Thin and fizzy, with a stinging carbonation.

O: Fizzy and poorly made. I'm not one to drainpour, but if I was, this would be a candidate.

***REVISIT: ***

I just revisited this beer after a few months, and it is marginally better but still unbelievably sub-par. Just a hint more malt backbone than I remember but still just tastes like dirty fizzy hop water. I might as well just steep some hops in my club soda next time...

Hazy, unfiltered copper appearance. Thick, off white head with lots of carbonation. Smells of malt, taste has some up front hops, with malt reinforcements dominating the middle taste segment. Great, full bodied mouthfeel. Another unique winner for Napenthe, they have a fresh take on classic styles and always feels original.
