Some things we like about the Map Room:
It's a real neighbourhood place with locals
You can park on the street round the corner for free
On a nice day the windows allow a nice breeze and the sun to shine in (on a long visit you can follow its arc across the sky from shade to light to shade again)
They have no food but have all the menus for many local places
It's all about beer - what else is there?
Oddly, we had read a whole bunch of very negative reviews on Metromix before our first visit so we had reservations. I guess there can be issues at night with the door man and young people trying to get in. We went on a weekday early afternoon and it was just wonderful: not crowded, chatty, friendly bar staff, all the beer you could ever want, food available just outside.
Prices are okay too (don't like the $25 credit card minimum though). Dulcie's son in his innocence ordered a 120 minute and was a bit shocked that it cost $12. That's actually a hell of a deal.
Very hard to beat. It also occupies a sentimental spot because we went there to celebrate after Dulcie getting the all-clear from UofC hospitals. She buys a round for the house; fortunately only about ten people where there at the time.

Opens at 6am for coffee and pastries. Starts serving beer at 11am. This place is absolutely lovely during the day with open windows during nice days. I, personally, avoid the weekends and nights. Too many amatuers. World class beer list and a very nice staff.
