On a sunny summer day, just like today, the Great and Wonderful Oz set sail in his hot-air balloon. As ballast, some say, his basket was loaded to the brim with Hoyne Hefeweizen. After lift-off, his thirst gathered like a summer storm. Quenching it, he lightened his load, and found himself carried delightfully away. The rest, as they say, is his story.

650ml bottle, procured in the local (actually open) liquor store on a rainy summer evening in Radium, BC.

This beer pours a hazy, yet bright medium golden amber hue, with one finger of puffy, loosely foamy, and somewhat bubbly off-white head, which leaves a bit of splotchy island group lace around the glass as things evenly melt away.

It smells of mildly spicy wheat grain, earthy, kind of dry honey, a muddled and faint pepper mill dustiness, lazy yeast, and tame leafy, weedy, and herbal hop bitters. The taste is dry, crackery pale and wheat malt, still underwhelming honeyed cereal notes, subtle black and white pepper spice, and more plain leafy, herbal, and dead grassy hops.

The bubbles are mostly just frivolous in their meek and ethereal frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and generally smooth, I suppose, a wee honeyed essence buoying things to a certain degree. It finishes off-dry, barely, as the hops turn musty, but still affable, while the mixed graininess and bee poop trundle onward.

As I'm not a longtime (or recent, to really put things in perspective) hefeweizen fan, I felt a bit cheated by the understated honey character, and not quite lifted by the equally bland style adherence evident here. End result? An easy drinking, um, something, which apparently doesn't have to give two shits about labels, and that's more than enough for me to follow through on this bomber.

Poured from a 650ml bottle. This is definitely an American-style hefe. It offers a rich “natural” honey character however there weren't much in the way of “Hefe” yeast notes. There is a fine carbonation and silky mouthfeel with a big dose of honey flavour mid palate, yet it is balanced out with enough hop bitterness on the finish. Well made and quaffable, but more like a cloudy wheat beer than a traditional hefe.

Hoyne Brewing's "Summer Haze" Honey Hefe @ 5.1% served cold from a 650 ml bottle
A-poured a pale yellow/gold with a decent head leaving some large lacing on the weizen glass
S-a hint of honey , not overpowering , earthy
T-nice and pleasant , the honey flavor is almost like the beer been filtered thru a honeycomb
MF-light carbonation , not too many bubbles rising from the glass , smooth and a bit of a sweet finish
Ov-a very refreshing hefeweizen , a good summer beer , a definate yes

Cheers LampertLand

The German yeast character is rather subdued so it sort of bridges the gap between an American Wheat and a true hefe.

There's a nice malt backbone (Gambrinus honey malt no doubt), but I'd be surprised if the grist was more than 50% wheat.

Slight residual sweetness enhances the honey flavour, without being too sweet.

Nice brew.

Hoyne Summer haze pours a slightly hazy deep gold with a thin white head. The aroma is crisp, malty wheat with a hint of spice, with an odd sweet graininess. The flavor is similar, with plenty of wheat and a hint of honey in the finish. The odd spicy grainy character is present in the flavor and there is a bit of lingering sweetness. Overall a pretty decent beer, but not as refreshing as I would like.
