While lager's are not my first choice to drink, I take reviewing them as an objective task, comparing to other lagers, not to my personalized preferences in general. In general Tsingtao is a decent beer, everything else aside, and one worth at minimum trying. I received it as a part of a 'beers of the world collection' (while I was in the Netherlands, nonetheless), and had never tried it before so I thought I'd give it a try. ok, enough of my aimless wandering on to the part you guys actually give a ____ about:

appearance: it was a little light looking, though of a good straw colour, actually kind of reminds me of apple cider, in terms of appearance. good level of carbonation, though not much of a head when poured into a glass.

smell: decent smell, slightly sweet, but not overly so.

taste: an enjoyable light flavour, not succumbing to the somewhat stale overtones of other macrobrew lagers, the carbonation accents some of the subtle flavours hidden under the initial hint of sweetness. I keep mentioning the sweet overtones of this beer, but rest assured, I would not classify it as 'sweet' in and of itself, it's just a little touch more so than other lagers I have tasted. there's a very faint touch of fruit behind some of the other flavours, however exactly what those other falvours are I cannot quite place, a shortcoming for which I apologize. There is a faint coddee-esque hint, which surprises me as that is typically more characteristic of darker beers I have sampled, as is the subtle hint of cream.

mouthfeel: this is an area where this beer stands out, as the glass I am drinking has a very pleasant feel in the mouth (that sounds dirty somehow...). the carbonation level is just about where I like it, not overpoweing, but present, as the tiny bubbles dance lightly on the tongue luring out the flavours hidden behind one another, and the aforementioned mild creamy sense makes it easy to hold and swallow. It doesn't carry with it much of the unpleasant stale feeling I get from many macro lagers, and is light, and somewhat fresh feeling.

drinkability: it is light, and crisp, yet at the same time soft, and pleasant on the palate. the carbonation is not overdone, and does not dissuade from further enjoyment, yet is persistant enough that a glass can take a while to finish, and yet still feel as freshly poured by the last sip as it did initially.

overall, a fairly enjoyable imported lager. I would recommend it to someone looking for what it is, however if this is not your fancy, it's not so great as to be worth gong way out of your way just to get one.

Had this at a local Chinese restaurant and I will make sure to never make that mistake again.Pours a straw color with not much head aroma was kinda skunked with some grainy aromas popping thru faintly.Taste is pretty bland some corn flavors with a very light fruitiness but not much here at all a light malty aftertaste but not much here.Seemed a litttle watery not much here a waste eating space.

Tastes Shitty, Is No Good, Try AnOther
---Ancient Chinese Proverb

I learned the above phrase from a friend I met in Guilin and had to share with the BA Universe.

Now for a very serious and well thought out review that respects the brewer and the creative muster that went into this fine brew and symbol of Chinese brewing:

Appearance: Moderately light yellow with a thick bubbly foam that immediately drops to nearly nothing, just a thin ring around the glass. Plenty of carbonation.

Aroma: Sweet grains and a faint amount of hops. Usually, in fact almost always skunky, at least a little bit.

Taste: Slightly bready with a bit of malt or perhaps corn/rice sweetness. Some boiled vegetable flavor. The idea that some hops may have been sitting around the brewery at one time and that one or two small husks may have fallen into the batch somewhere along the way.

Mouthfeel: A nice carbonation bite, lingering sweetness with just the faintest sense of hop bitterness. Biting, light, a bit watery, but crisp.

Appearance: Very light, very clear. Straw yellow, pilsner, very white fuzzy head that formed and fell quickly. The phrase "champagne of beers" comes to mind because the appearance is like that.

Smell: First smell is the slightly skunky Euro-Grolsch-lager aroma that's typical of these types of beers stored in green bottles. Then it's light and grainy. Understated and slightly spicy hops.

Taste: Light and crisp; has that slightly skunky macro-pilsner "twang." Some grain—corn. Clean aftertaste. Again, hops are understated and not really a presence, other than in cutting down the sweetness.

Mouthfeel: Very light, a little effervescent. I wouldn't say watery, but leaning that way. Very clean feeling.

Overall: It's decent, better than the typical American macro. Certainly one I'll order next time I'm out for Chinese; I have a hunch it will complement a spicy dish quite well.

Presentation: Green 12oz custom bottle with Chinese letters around the neck. Made with water from the famous pure mountain water of Laoshan.

Appearance: Clear, pale golden yellow with a thin white ringed lace.

Smell: Very delicate aroma of faint grains and hop floral notes.

Taste: Mouthfeel is firm, but light. Body is actually medium, that of a malt liquor. Malt character is non-traditional. What comes across are grain flavours and a unique clean sweetness, not the sweet malty sweetness that one might expect. Sublte sulfur notes (lager yeast by-product) mixed with bready flavours, and a healthy hop bitterness complement the malt character and lend a pleasant crispness to the beer.

Notes: A most unique sweet lager, and it stands apart from most imports as a result. It goes great with Chinese food, but even better with Chinese chocolate treats, waffers and freshly bought Chinese pastries.

What to say about this beer? it is unusual by domestic stand points or even most international. while i isnt horrable it does leave a bit to be desired. Moderate flovor, not weak, not potent. About this biterness of a back, but with not as clean a flavor. All in all not a horrable beer, but one i cant see drinking every day

Light color full but quick disappearing head, full but not distinctive aroma, highly bubbly absolutely no sftertastehas texture and mouthfeel of a light beer. Very simple totally loses flavor with food, almost like seltzer water. It does however clean your mouth so you can enjoe your Chinese food.A gulping beer strictly for quenching thirst.

Presentation: It was poured from a green 12oz. bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: It has a very pale straw color that is very clear with lots of visible carbonation. The head is thin, white in color and fades out quickly leaving no lace behind.

Smell: Its aroma has big floral nose with light grainy malts along with a light skunky smell.

Taste/Mouth feel: Despite the skunk in the aroma the flavor is very clean with mild floral and delicate grainy sweetness followed by a mild bitterness in the finish. It has an easy drinking light body with just enough fizzy carbonation to give it some life.

Notes: Overall it's a very easy drinking lager with a modest light flavor. Average.

Got some Tsingtao after hearing about it from a friend, I was actually surprised to find it in my local supermarket. I didn't have very high expectations for this beer but it did much better than I expected

A - A yellow and very clear lager. Looks fine, very light coloured.

S - Not a very strong smelling beer, but there is a somewhat sweet smell which overall isn't too bad.

T - Very sweet for a beer, almost like a beer flavoured soda pop. Very light flavour, not a strong flvaoured beer by any means but sill enjoyable.

M - Very light, even after the bubbles subside there is just enough carbonation to add just a little extra crispness to it.

D - Very easy to drink, it would be very easy to drink lots of these on a hot summer day. Also good when you want to have a beer with your meal that won't overpower what your eating and leaves your mouth refreshed, to eat more food or just as easily take another drink.

This is my mainstay at any Asia (Chinese) restaurant in the Boston area, I know it is quite fresh and clean the palate well with some grain and crisp carbonation. It holds onto a slim sweetness as well.

The Budwieser of China. This is a macro all the way. Very faint hops and little maltiness. Dry in character. A little skunky. Grain aftertaste. Quite bitter. If I try this again I want it ice cold. I recommend this if you want to see what the Chinese drink.

Pours a pale, straw yellow with a small, white head. No lacing.
Aroma features pale malt, some faint floral hops, and a mild note of skunky mildewed hay.
Mouthfeel is actively carbonated, with a slight, white pepper bite on the tongue.
Taste is unremarkable. Floral, hops notes are very faint, and there is a hint of skunky, mildewed hay. Finishes slightly bitter, but clean, overall.
Not an outstanding import, but I enjoy this with spicy Asian food.
