Large german style-restaurant in Pozuelo, about 10 km away from downtown Madrid. Home of the Calvin´s Beer, pioneer craft beer in Madrid. Offers two of their beers on tap, with a couple of industrial ones also. Food is quite good, typical german dishes, and reasonable priced.

Founded in 2006, this microbrewery produces about 1000 hectoliters of artisanal beer out of an industrial park in Vallecas, Madrid. From there it is distributed to their three brewpubs (two in Pozuelo de Alarcon, a wealthy suburb of Madrid, and one in Alicante in the eastern coast of Spain by the beach).
They have only three styles: “Rubia”, “Tostada” y “Negra”. The first one is a wheat beer, the second is a dark Munich Helles and the last one is a Schwarzbier (black lager) and comes in bottles only.
The wife and I always choose the “Tostada”, a nicely-done Munich Helles with tasty toasted malts, good-enough hops and a dry-fruit backbone. As far as Spain goes, this is damn good stuff.
My review is of their brewpub at Avenida de la Comunidad de Madrid, 3, in Pozuelo de Alarcon. Located in a commercial strip right next to an Italian restaurant and an upscale convenience-store, Calvin's could easily go unnoticed in an area chock-full of restaurants, bars and stores of all kinds. But this is the real deal, only because they have fresh craft beer.
The interior at Calvin's looks fairly generic, just like any other bar in Spain. Only this one serves real beer! Service is good and friendly and the wife and I always have a good time here. Not loud, not crazy, just chill. The beers are fresh and well-poured, and the prices are very reasonable.
Last time we were there, the day before flying back home to NYC, a manager gave me a free "Negra" because I had poured it wrong (tilting the glass) and got no head. He started talking to me about beer and I could tell he is passionate about his trade.
The only downside here is the food. They have a fairly extensive menu with cold and hot "pintxos" and tapas, but they are pretty mediocre. Pretty much everything here tastes microwaved or just not up-to-par, considering the wealth of good restaurants in Pozuelo. But they do give you free tapas with your beer, and I like that.
Spain has got very, very few microbreweries. Calvin's is one of them, so if you happen to be in Pozuelo (a ten-minute train ride from Downtown Madrid), you ought to stop here.
