Notes/Commercial Description:
We had a single open spot on the schedule and told BeeJay he could brew whatever his little bearded heart desired. The result of his labors (and what some professionals call insanity) is BeeJay's Weirdo Brown Ale. We asked him what he wanted to hop it with and he just kept yelling "ALL OF THE NESLON!" We obliged him and the result is a delicious hoppy imperial brown ale with lovely aromas of tangerine, passion fruit and grapefruit. Don't sleep on this guy, it was a very small batch.

Poured a bottle , batch 314-315, into a darkness snifter.

Appearance: Pours a light brown. Darker in the glass with an amber color and honey like. Large 1 inch head. Fast " cool down " with no lacing left behind.

Smell: Honey, sweet malts as soon as I opened the bottom. From the glass I smell a sweet drink like syrup. Vanilla notes. More vanilla bean notes.

Taste: some bitterness, citrus notes , honey, velvety and nutty. Some grass notes. As it warms some pine and grapefruit.

Mouthfeel: nice carbonation , light on the mouth , refreshing feel. Dryness at the end. Slight alcohol burn at the end but enjoyable. Leaves a slight tingle on the tongue.

Overall: a huge favorite of mine from Pipeworks. Original batch was slightly better and only wish I took notes. This batch so slightly more bitter and less sweet. Don't let this part fool the review. This is a great beer. Yearly release per se. Second time they brew it in just under a year. If it's still on the shelve for the locals , scoop it one up or two. Good for aging.

Deep dark brown with a huge billowing off-white head. Tons of persistent lacing.

The smell is caramel and tea like herbal hops. Some grapefruit.

The flavor is mostly caramel and toffee but as it warms the herbal hops come to the surface. It's astringent and bitter.

Medium to heavy body with a puckering effect on the tongue.

The herbal bitterness is a nice contrast to the sweet caramel in this brown ale. Another fantastic hoppy brew by Pipeworks.

Enjoyed this when it first came out but didn't get a bottle for myself. Finally found one a few weeks later, and trying it again now.

Pours a dark mahogany brown, lots of coating lace in the glass, and a lasting surface skim. Initial surge of foam rises momentarily above the rim.

Less pungent than the last time around, mellow roast, milk chocolate and light citrus.

Taste is alternately roasty and citric, with a slight buttery note and earthy hop bitterness that's lasts momentarily. Soft roasty malt aftertaste. Creamy and smooth feel, it's supple and drinkable. Occasional traces of grapefruit but it's not well defined, an odd mix but it works. The buttery note seems to be slight, but I didn't notice it the first time. Overall it's a unique combination, will look for it again the next time around.

22 oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. Batch #224. Another creation from Pipeworks; expectations are moderately high based on this knowledge.

Poured into an over-sized wine glass, per the death of my snifter.

A - Ah yes, pours a beautiful chestnut brown colored body with three fluffy fingers of tan head. Head retention is very nice, considering this beer's high 9.50% abv. Nice soapy lacing. Looks very nice indeed.

S - Smell is of dirty earthy hops, some grapefruit, some peppery rye, chocolate malt, maybe a hint of smoke, and some cream.

T - Taste follows the nose well. The Nelson Sauvin hops really show themselves here also. Lots of fresh hop bitterness, but more of a dirty earthy hop presence instead of fruity, which fits the profile nicely. Some red / amber malt roast, some rye, cracked peppercorns, grapefruit, & some orange cream presence on the end.

M - Feel is smooth and creamy, bitter and resinous on the finish with earthy and grapefruit hops present. A very nice aftertaste. Medium bodied with good carbonation.

Overall, another winner from Pipeworks. These guys can do no wrong. Highly recommended if you can find yourself a bottle.
