This thing is just a pleasure. I'm always a fan of Pipeworks beers, but came in with very little expectations for this one as I think Imperial Oatmeal Stouts tend to be a tough style to execute on properly. This though? Is delicious. SCARY drinkable for 10.5%

The best part of this is the fact that I can detect a variety of dark fruits in the flavor profile, giving it almost a bramble-like quality. Really excellent brew that shouldn't be left sitting on a shelf if you see it.

Inky black color. The head is late-developing and produces a fizzy surface coating for seconds then disappears, leaving behind a handful of large bubbles.

Light aromas of cocoa, roasted malt, and cardboard.

The taste is a little deeper with cocoa, roast, grape soda, and anise. It's has a light tartness about it.

Mouthfeel is thin with low carbonation, borderline flat.

It's the first time I've felt disappointed by a Pipeworks beer. Given their track record, they've earned a mulligan.

22 oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. Batch #238 242 243 printed on the back label. Another stout from the masters at Pipeworks; expectations are moderately high based on this knowledge.

Poured into an over-sized wine glass.

A - Aggressive pour conjures about a finger of creamy tan head that goes down to a ring rather quickly. Pours a dark cola brown; opaque black in the glass. Just the faintest bit of spotty lacing, but none of it really sticks. Still, looks good to me.

S - Aroma is of roasted oatmeal, black coffee, and a tart cherry / strawberry cream sort of presence. Not a terribly powerful aroma, but it hits it's mark.

T - Dark and roasty with just the right amount of dark fruity tartness. Chocolate / cocoa, coffee, oatmeal, some malt roast, and some tart cherry juice and creamy strawberry.

M - Feel is fairly smooth and creamy, with some residual cherry tartness / stickiness lingering on the palate.

Overall, another wonderful stout from Pipeworks; I think I tend to enjoy their stouts the best. While it clearly isn't the greatest stout they've ever brewed, it is certainly well worthwhile, and a worthy addition to the Pipeworks family. I would definitely have it again.

Pipeworks What Lurks In The Dark ---4/5.

A-Clearish brown when pouring, two finger brown head that doesn't last long.

S-Roasted malt, chocolate, some oats, coffee isn't really there.

T-Starts with roasted malt, tad bit of chocolate and oats. that is about it. Not much else.

M-Medium in body, slightly watery, not much carbonation. Some alcohol heat.

O-Not sure that this beer needed to be over 10%, Pipeworks makes some amazing beers but this one is only ok. But glad I was able to try it, always love Pipeworks stuff.

Served in a shaker pint glass.

Who knows what darkness lurks in the hearts of beer drinkers? Anyway, this stuff pours a dark midnight sienna topped by a finger of wan sandstone foam. The nose comprises roasted malts, dark chocolate powder, light coffee, and a hint of treacle. The taste brings in more of the same, along with a touch of toasted oats. The body is a hefty-leaning medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a somewhat thick-ish feel. Overall, a pretty solid stout, nothing to write home about, but I could see drinking this again.
