Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: MasterSki on 11-08-2013

This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

We brew this Wee Heavy with Fennugreek, for a distinct maple character, and vanilla bean. The we aged it in Buffalo Trace barrels for nine months. The beer that came out of the barres is a beautiful composition of maple, oak, caramel, vanilla, bourbon and perfectly burnt sugar. Wonderful now but also will stand up to a Rip Van Winkle style nap in you temperature controlled area of choice.

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Murky brown. Thin collar after a small khaki head dissipates.

Smell - Nice bourbon aroma. A little bit of toffee and butterscotch.

Taste - Again, the bourbon flavor is sharp and really nice. Butterscotch and toffee. Spices linger in the finish with oak.

Mouthfeel - Medium heavy with a sharp bourbon. Medium carbonation.

Overall - Good beer with a very nice barrel character.

Batch #75. 12oz bottled poured into a snifter.

A: Super dark with a tan, one-finger head; dark amber at the rim of the glass. (Side note: label artwork is really neat).

S: Intense bourbon aroma dominates; there's a faint but detectable pepper scent, maybe from the fenugreek; strong candied toffee sweetness. Very inviting and somewhat reminiscent of BCBS.

T: Bourbon dominates on the front end, then gives way to toffee and dark red fruits; that's followed by some rich maltiness you might expect from a regular wee heavy; again, some light pepper or fenugreek flavor; heavy vanilla on the aftertaste.

M: Smooth and creamy; on the lighter/thinner side of the spectrum, but not in a bad way.

O: Outstanding. Great barrel character, great dark fruit and maltiness, and great spiciness (or whatever you want to call it) from the fenugreek. Not sure how faithful this BA version is to the wee heavy style, but why bother about that when it tastes so good?
