Notes & Commercial Description:

This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

We brew this Wee Heavy with Fennugreek, for a distinct maple character, and vanilla bean. The we aged it in Buffalo Trace barrels for nine months. The beer that came out of the barres is a beautiful composition of maple, oak, caramel, vanilla, bourbon and perfectly burnt sugar. Wonderful now but also will stand up to a Rip Van Winkle style nap in you temperature controlled area of choice.

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Murky brown. Thin collar after a small khaki head dissipates.

Smell - Nice bourbon aroma. A little bit of toffee and butterscotch.

Taste - Again, the bourbon flavor is sharp and really nice. Butterscotch and toffee. Spices linger in the finish with oak.

Mouthfeel - Medium heavy with a sharp bourbon. Medium carbonation.

Overall - Good beer with a very nice barrel character.

Batch #75. 12oz bottled poured into a snifter.

A: Super dark with a tan, one-finger head; dark amber at the rim of the glass. (Side note: label artwork is really neat).

S: Intense bourbon aroma dominates; there's a faint but detectable pepper scent, maybe from the fenugreek; strong candied toffee sweetness. Very inviting and somewhat reminiscent of BCBS.

T: Bourbon dominates on the front end, then gives way to toffee and dark red fruits; that's followed by some rich maltiness you might expect from a regular wee heavy; again, some light pepper or fenugreek flavor; heavy vanilla on the aftertaste.

M: Smooth and creamy; on the lighter/thinner side of the spectrum, but not in a bad way.

O: Outstanding. Great barrel character, great dark fruit and maltiness, and great spiciness (or whatever you want to call it) from the fenugreek. Not sure how faithful this BA version is to the wee heavy style, but why bother about that when it tastes so good?

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - nothing unexpected here. Looks like a BA Wee Heavy. dark brown color with little head that dissipated quickly.

Smell - Almost all bourbon aroma. The aroma is not great tbh. Smells thin. A hint of toffee and but it is really heavy on bourbon.

Taste - Bourbon is first but there are now other flavors showing up. Lots of toffee, some butterscotch. Last Kiss a good beer and this barrell has done well to enhance it on the flavor. I was hesitant on the aroma, but the taste makes up for it.

Mouthfeel - carbonation is where it should be and it leaves a nice rich coating throughout the mouth.

Overall - I'm not sure what could be done to up the balance the aroma here. Other than that I wouldn't change much. Very nice stuff. Happy to have tried one. High five Pipeworks!

A dark shade of brown with a hint of gray to it. Forms just the faintest bit of creamy head that just dissipates as quickly as it forms. Appears flat. Between the gray-brown color, this isn't the prettiest of beers.
Aroma on the other hand is quite pleasant: Strong scent of vanilla, followed up by oak, dark malts, molasses, and raisin. Tastes offers similar qualities, but is much punchier. Starts off with a strong bourbon character with notes of sweet toffee, floral vanilla, dark malts and touch of woodsiness (presumably from the fenugreek).
Full bodied - almost syrupy - with lower carbonation levels. Very mild bitterness, though there is a bit of an astringency on the back end.
An impressive BA beer. Very nice.
