Drank 7.5.14. Poured from a bomber, batch #383-385, into a tulip glass.
After months and months of reading about and following Pipeworks, I finally made it back to my hometown of Chicago, and made sure to purchase a few choice bombers. Having already gotten rave reviews from friends about their DIPA offerings, I wanted to start my experience with PW by tasting a few of their stouts. First up, Toasty Nut Abduction.
A: Pours jet black with a very dark, slow rising, mocha head visible only after a hard pour. Head fades quickly, leaving zero cap whatsoever, just a minimal ring to complement this completely opaque beer. Leaves no lacing, but coats the glass like motor oil, lingering long after the last movement. A great looking stout.
S: Sweet dark chocolate, strong almond notes, and a smooth vanilla underlay. Maybe I pick up a smidge of coconut, but with how sweet this beer smells, its hard for me to single it out. Of course it has coconut, but no need for that to scare you off if you don't like coconut (I don't)
T: Heaps of sweet dark chocolate, earthy almond/coconut flavors, vanilla accents and finishes with a strong, dark fruit bitterness from the cacao nibs.
M: Thick and sweet. Goes down like oil, clinging to your teeth and tongue long after tasting. Mild carbonation at first, quickly supplanted by a full/creamy body, with a snappy bitter finish.
O: Two words can be used to describe this beer. A lot. A lot to look at, a lot to smell, a alot to taste, and a lot to handle. Big, sweet, and thick... but hides its 10.5% ABV extremely well behind a mountain of sweetness and a scent you can pick up from across the room. A definite recommend to any Stout drinker.
