Notes/Commercial Description:
This IIPA, the latest addition in our hop-highlighting NvU Epic Battle series, has a bright, fresh hop aroma, and a subtle bitterness, that has us all talking about how crushable this is. (DISCLAIMER: Please do not actually crush beer while still in bottle and cap is still on. It will hurt…not that we know) Drink early, drink often.

Pours a nice bright copper/gold. Clear. Almost no head on this pour. Smell is very underwhelming. Usually these pipeworks DIPA explode with a nice aroma. Only getting a small amount of pine in the smell. The taste is very light. Slight citrus and pine flavor. No hop bitterness present. I'm surprised by how unhoppy this is tasting. Very malty, but it is refreshing and easy to drink. Glad I have a second bottle to try, this one just doesn't seem as good as some other pipeworks and I've heard great things about it. It's not bad, just wasn't what I was expecting. Will try again soon. It's really smooth and goes down quick.

22 oz. bomber, bottled 03/12/14. Poured into a Three Floyds teku.

A: Slightly hazy golden orange. Thin head.

S: Mango and papaya up front, sweet citrus and a hint of pine on the back. Smells fantastic.

T: Notable departure from the nose: mild bitterness and sticky hops that fade quickly. Missing the tropical fruits I got in the nose, though these flavors emerged a bit as the beer warmed up. A touch of malty sweetness plays well with the bitter hops. Very refreshing bitterness at the end.

M: Probably falls into the medium-bodied category, but a bit on the thin and watery side.

O: Amazing smell, but the taste and mouthfeel left something to be desired. In the end, however, these are just quibbles: I'd gladly pound an Amarillo bomber any day of the week. Eminently quaffable.

22oz bottle split with Randy. Thanks man. Poured into a Surly goblet today, 3/4/2014.

App- typical hazy copper-orange body, one finger white head, solid retention, good lacing

Smell- smelled like blue cheese out of the bottle. Seriously. In the glass it gets better as it warms and the Amarillo character comes out more with citrus and even a bit of resinous pine.

Flavor- nicely balanced between the citrus, pine and the bready caramel malts. Really well done and very balanced.

Mouthfeel- typical pipeworks- nice medium bodied brew, good carbonation and nice dry finish of pine. Bitter but not overwhelmingly so.

Overall- A decent offering although I enjoyed Citra and Simcoe a lot more than this one. Worth trying if you enjoy Amarillo hopped beers. Otherwise, the price per bomber is a bit high.
