The Brown & Stirred is our Longman & Eagle collaboration Manhattan inspired Imperial Rye Ale. We aged this version in Rittenhouse Rye barrels for nine months. While it was aging we added pureed cherries and our special "bitters" made form cinchona bark and gentian. The result is a beer with a wonderfully aromatic nose of whiskey, oak, cherry, coconut, baking spice and rye that is truly evocative of drinking the classic cocktail.

Released 1/24/18; drank 3/4/18 @ the Yarchives.
Opaque muddy brown/orange appearance.
A rough pour yielded a small tan head; no lace.
Bourbon, oak, dry vermouth & maraschino cherry notes in the nose.
Thick, sticky mouthfeel.
As for the flavor...yeah, it approximates a Manhattan, but just makes you want a real one. This is heavier, stickier & less enjoyable than the cocktail. An interesting failure.

Color is a medium brown and a bit translucent. On the nose I get maple and banana. The taste is truly like a Manhatta with a bit hoppiness. Love it.

Murky brownish-red with almost no head, aside from a tan ring.
Smell is stale wood, pear and caramel.
Taste is toffee, hot, stale cherries, and pumpernickel.
Very dry and sticky.
It's pretty off-putting when competing with many other stellar brews at a beer festival. It might be different if imbibed by itself at a swanky bar, but alas, that was not the case here.

Appearance- The beer pretty murky brown color with mocha colored bubbles.
Smell- The beer smells more like a Manhattan then a beer. There is spicy orange and cherry.
Taste - at the front, I get spicy orange and cherry. The orange is slightly medicinal. I also get a notes of oak, rye, and maraschino cherries. The real problem is the taste just kind of ends.
Mouthfeel - Admittedly, I'm not sure whether to judge the beer to style or to the mix drink. One way or another, it seemed a bit thin.
Overall- As a novelty beer, this is worth a try.

Pours a deep brown color, quite dark in the glass. Very small tan colored head fizzes off immediately. No lacing.
Aroma is rye whiskey, caramel, alcohol. Some oak and mild cherry. Rye really dominates.
More rye whiskey on first sip. Cherry comes through stronger than the aroma. Caramel, vanilla, and oak. Some rye spice but fairly sweet overall. Boozy.
Medium+ body with moderate carbonation. Chest warmingly boozy. Sweet and gets a bit syrupy toward the end.
This maybe could have used some time to take the boozy heat away. Good cherry flavor., noticeable but not overpowering.

Pours a dark Amber color. Has an aroma of molasses, vanilla, Carmel and booze. Flavor is great. A sweet booziness. You get notes of cherry an bitters. Leaves a sweet and tart warm finish. Overall really delicious

22 ounce bottle into a snifter. Batch 451/452.
Pours a dark, hazy, copper with a small head, some foamy cling. Smell is of cherries, malt, rye, some herbal spiciness, a little caramel. Taste brings a lot more rye, strong cherry flavor, malt, some vanilla, caramel and spicy herbs. Light alcohol taste. Smooth, full bodied, taste lingers.
Really enjoyed this, the rye barrels added so much to the non- BA version- which I also thought was very good. Flavorful, well blended, great body and feel. Wish I had another.

22 oz. bottle
Poured into a snifter.
A - Pours cloudy like unfiltered apple cider. Very little carbonation. Nice lace on the glass when you sip it.
S - Big wiff of booze cherries, and spices..
T - Lots of layers. Rye whiskey, cherries, bitters, spices. Some toffee and caramel too.
M - Full-bodied. Great flavor of the spices left on your tongue.
This beer is one of the best Manhattan's I've ever had. Need to pick up more and I definitely recommend it.

22 oz. bottle, Batch #451-452. 'Manhattan inspired ale brewed with cherries and "bitters" (The Rye Whiskey Barrel Aged Remix)'. It's been quite some time since I've tried the base beer, so we'll see how this one goes.
Poured into a clear balloon snifter.
A - Pours a rich thick cola / cherry syrup / caramel colored body. Less than a finger of thin khaki bubbles than thins to a ring. Leaves tones of sticky sugary lacing when given a nice swirl and after each sip. An extremely thick and viscous appearance.
S - A powerful aroma, full of alcohol fumes initially. Aromas of cherries, roots, and spices are also very apparent players once the booze fumes back off. Notes of chocolate / caramel.
T - Taste follows the nose: big and complex. Tons of rye whiskey, alcohol warmth, cherries, cola, syrup, and lots of the advertised 'bitters', roots, and spices. Notes of creamy vanilla, caramel, toffee imparted from the barrel.
M - The feel is smooth & creamy. Thick, heavy, & full-bodied. Good low lying carb. Tons of alcohol fumes / botanicals leftover on the palate.
Overall, another very unique beer from Pipeworks. I'd say the base beer went well with the rye whiskey barrel aging, although with the high abv, I could definitely see bottles of this stuff benefiting from some age. Recommended.
Pipeworks The Brown & Stirred (The Rye Whiskey Barrel Aged Remix) -----4/5.
