Notes/Commercial Description:
Pipeworks Smoked Porter is brewed with classic rauch malt and cherrywood smoked malt, totaling 20% of the grist. This first offering in our smoked series starts with a rich malt base with hints of roast, finishing with a moderate level of smoky campfire-goodness. We’ll be brewing this one with different levels of smokiness throughout the year, so we’re sure to find something with just the right amount of smoke for you!

Very dark brown fading into black in the glass, with mahogany edges. Sturdy meringue foam, a fingers width, leaving behind arcs of lace in the glass. Long lasting head, it never fades. Yay, head.

Smooth and creamy feel, pleasant wood smoke in the aroma, slightly sweet and fragrant. Not quite approaching campfire, but a piece of burnt wood definitely.

Flavors are nice, mainly light wood smoke, dry bakers chocolate, very light malt sweetness, with a lingering dry smoky finish. In the middle there's a pleasant sweetness that segues quickly into the dry aftertaste. Woodiness is dry and not too overt, everything seems pretty well melded here. At first there was some mild astringency, but it seems to have tapered off quickly. I like this alot better than Stone's smoked porter.

Thanks to Robbiemoy13 for this bottle. Poured in to Bruery tulip.

A - Dark brown. One finger of light brown head.

S - Big smoke aroma up front. Some roast is also evident but the smoke dominates.

T - A huge smoke flavour up front that overwhelms the palate. Some roasted malts and lighter chocolate notes are also present.

M - Medium body. Creamy. Light carbonation.

Red wax bottle courtesy of raveskdr. Thanks, Chris! Served in a tulip. Pours nearly black. Decent tan head and a bit of lacing. Nose has a bit of smoke. Light roast. Dry. Smoke. Medium body. Somewhat non descript. Nothing particularly wrong with it; just not my style.

Smell (3.5) – dark woody notes. Toffee is present. Somewhat weak smell.

Appearance (3.75) – light pour into a snifter. Dark molasses brown with some light coming through the edges. No real head but has white foam around the edges. Lacing isn't really happening. Light comes through more when I've got about half a snifter.

Taste (4.50) – Smoky hickory flavor comes right to the front. Molasses, toffee, and dark caramels fill it out. The smoky flavor seams earthen and woody. Smoke might be a bit much, but I'm really diggin it. Smooth flavor profile. If you look really hard for some roasted character, its there.

Mouthfeel (4.00) – Pretty light consistency. Good carbonation levels. Lips definitely sticky afterwards. So is my arm where I spilled a drop. Smooth feel. Its there and then its gone. Probably best served a little on the colder side.

Overall (4.25) - I think this beer is really well done. Its not trying to be anything weird, but is simply a smoky porter. The smoke profile is awesome to me while not being overwhelming, but others might think its a bit much. The light consistency might be the only legitimate draw back – I wish it had more umph to it.

22 oz bomber, batch 11, poured into a tulip glass.

A- Pours an opaque brown color with mahogany edges, topped with two fingers of tan head, good retention, leaves some spotty lacing.

S- Has a really great smokey campfire aroma, hints of smoked meats and bacon, has a bit of chocolate.

T- Follows the nose with big smokey flavors, hints of charred wood and smoked meat, hints of roasted grain and dark chocolate, but the smoke is the star here.

M- Medium-bodied, moderate carbonation, smooth creamy feel.

O- A really nice beer, it might be able to stand a bit more chocolate, but uses the smoked malt really well, I probably preferred this to the BA smoked porter. Another really tasty, drinkable brew from Pipeworks.

Served in a nonic pint glass.

Cruisin' into another Pipeworks brew, excited to see their take on some smoky goodness. It pours a decidedly dark burnt sienna topped by a small finger of khaki foam. The nose comprises hickory smoke, roasted malts, rich maple syrup, and a bit of charcoal. The taste brings in more of the same, with the smoke coming in strong, yet still being balanced by the nice, deep roast and maple notes. The body is a stolid medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a sorta/kinda dry finish. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable smoked porter. Good times. 'Nuff said.

Appearance: Pours with a medium bodied thickness. Creamy off white head that peaked at about two fingers and was present throughout at about one finger. Pitch black in the glass but has some dark brown accents around the edges. Simply looks outstanding.

Smell: A nutty front hits the nose right away. The smokey malt dominates the aroma though, very round and balanced. Some of the dark malts and fruit poke through. Some sweeter molasses accents leak through but again the smoke dominates.

Taste: Smokey malt hits right away. The malt cleans out toward the middle of the brew. Clean syrup and oak, charred, bark hits. Rounded sweet toffee, molasses, and malt keeps pushing through. Light sweet finish.

Mouthfeel: The voluptuous head provides a creamy feeling throughout.

Overall: A really solid porter. A still too much on the smokey side for me. There are a lot of great things going on, I wish they were a little more pronounced though.
