Batch 21
(Served in a tulip glass)

A- This beer pours a slightly hazy golden yellow body with a creamy snow white head and a strong swirl of microbubbles.

S- Soft earthy yeast notes grow a bit as the beer opens but it is a pretty clean aroma.

T- The taste is dry pale malt that leads to a finish with a hint of soapy peppercorn that comes through as the it warms. The bitterness lingers and has a pithy taste to it as it opens.

M- The light mouthfeel has a soft scrubbing bubbles with no alcohol heat noticed.

O- The saison character is very soft and the peppercorn adds a dominating bite that grows a bit harsh as it opens up. This is a clean beer with not much flavor and is a bit hard to get through with the peppercorn bite.

Hazy straw with a spongy white and persistent head.

Banana, funky, slightly spicy aromas. Band aid phenol.

Yeasty, spicy, faint dragonfruit. The peppercorn is heavy in the finish.

Mouthfeel is very dry and prickly. On the light side even for a saison.

I liked it but would have enjoyed it more if the peppercorn was dialed back and it wasn't so dry.

Decanted off the yeast into a tulip glass, it pours a gorgeously saturated orange color, opaque and nearly glowing in the light. Half inch of white foam rises, and begins to leave some lace behind. Visible trails of carbonation rising at the edges, and a patchy skim on the surface.

Soft aromas of phenolic Belgian yeast, pepper, clove, and field grass.

Taste is a little more fruit forward at first, with some dried apricot leading off, moving into a more earthy pepper middle. Dry aftertaste, slightly bitter. Creamy supple feel, medium bodied and lighter on carbonation. Overall the spicy, earthy notes win out in the end against the light apricot traces and honeyish malt flavors that surface at first. A good saison that could be a little more dry and crisp for my personal taste, but I also like it for what it is.

Bottle: Poured a deep hazy golden hay color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of rustic malt with light sweet notes and some light peppery ester. Taste is also dominated by solid rustic malt with balanced sweetness level and light peppery notes with some good floral ester. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Solid offering and I’m glad the pink pepper notes were not overly dominant as it would have been a shame to hide some of the nice characteristics of this beer.

22oz bottle into a tulip. Batch 21.

A: Pours a mellow orange-gold with a huge white head. Sticky lacing.

S: Sweet perfumy pale malt and farmhouse yeast, some cherry notes.

T: Light cake and stone fruit esters, slight peppery spiciness, vanilla. Palpable creamy, fruity notes from the peppercorns meld well with the soft esters.

M: Soft, moderate carbonation.

O: I really enjoyed this. The peppercorns are just right.

22 oz bomber, batch number 21, poured into a tulip glass.

A- Pours a hazy pale golden color. Even a careful pour produces a huge fluffy white head, which has very good retention and leaves lots of lacing.

S- Spicy peppercorn, which really does leave a bit of pepper aroma tingling in the back of your nose, also a considerable phenolic clove aroma and some fruit.

T- Similar to the nose, has lots of prominent crispy apple and pear flavors, as well as Belgian yeast and phenol, before a bit of spicy black pepper takes over towards the finish. The pepper is more subtle than I expected, with sweet and fruity saison flavors usually dominant.

M- Medium-bodied, good carbonation, smooth, slightly crisp feel, subtle warming alcohol.

O- A very enjoyable saison, the pepper makes a great complement to the fruity and yeasty flavors, definitely worth picking up.

Served in a Bruery snifter.

I've already used my one peppercorn joke (a sad play on a Sandlot character's name) before, so I guess it's right on to the beer this time, eh? It pours a lightly hazy straw topped by a couple fingers of decently quickly-dissipating white foam. The nose comprises a healthy dose of Belgian yeastiness, light black pepper, light cardamom, and a few squeezes each of lemon and orange. The yeast is definitely rocking the 'strils here. The taste brings in more of the same, though the citrus fruits come in stronger up front, yielding to the spicy and lightly funky yeast as things progress. The pepper is definitely there, but it's not up front/in your face (always good, I guess). The body is a light medium, with a moderate carbonation and a sorta/kinda dry finish. Overall, a nice saison, indeed, one that makes me look forward to future batches and other Pipeworks takes on the style. Good times.

22 oz. bottle poured into a Pipeworks small tulip

Pours a hazy straw colored gold with a two finger bright white head. Bready yeast, flora and grass, and dried fruit with citrus highlights on the nose. Very light citrus, apricot, maybe a touch of peach, bready, earthy yeast with just a touch of funk and peppery spice in the midpalate, and finishes dry with the spice added by the peppercorns. Light to medium body with a touch of creaminess and adequate carbonation adds to an enjoyable mouthfeel. A solid and very easy drinking saison, perfect for this pleasant summer night.
