Tasted with the group, side-by-side with the other three Pipeworks Berliners. 2/4. The pour is a lighter, ruby-red color with some amber around the edges, and maybe even the slightest blue tint all around. A weird, grey-ish, red-hued head fizzles away quickly. The aroma is that of a sweet blueberry patch, but it's quite a bit more relaxed and subdued than I would have liked. It's very mellow and surrounded by other seemingly random "berry" aromas - but the actual blueberry aromas aren't quite smacking me in the nostrils just yet.

The taste starts off with mildly tart blueberries, not really tart enough to even refer to it as "sour". The slight tartness quickly mellows out and turns into a natural sweetness. Some other fruit-like flavors I'm picking up are green apple skins, mild strawberry, and maybe even a little blackberry? Blueberry, however, is the forefront of all the fruit in the taste, and thankfully a bit more powerful that it was in the aroma. However, there seems to be something left to desire. Overall, things are still pretty mild - and while you must realize it's a Berliner-Weiss, you can (and should) still expect a little bit more than this. Thin bodied with medium-high carbonation.

In the end, this one was still pretty tasty and obviously very drinkable, but it's as though I was waiting for something that never came. Maybe I was expecting too much, thanks to my love of blueberries - but they just didn't come through like I wanted them to. Still a decent Berliner, but IMO, last place of the Pipeworks quad.

Bottle from batch 51

A: Beautiful purple/red color, nice white head that disappears quickly.
S: Smells like yogurt. The smell is weird, kinda off putting but not that bad (definitely not as bad as what I've heard the other batch smelled like).
T: Tastes better than the smell, that's for sure. Tart blueberries and some wheat.
M: Light bodied but with medium carbonation. I really like this, it's easy drinking and quite refreshing.
O: Not my favorite berliner but not bad.

Batch #51
(Served in a strange)

A- This beer pours a deep pastel purple body with a white thick foam that takes on a purple hue. There is a wall of microbubbles that race up the sides of the glass.

S- The bright blueberry aroma has some tartness and reminds me of mamba candies as it opens up.

T- The blueberry flavor is soft but starts to grow bigger with a watery and waxy candy note followed by a faint vinous white wine hint to it. The finish has a slight sweet corn note that grows with a blueberry flavor coming back in the finish and lingering.

M- This beer has a light mouthfeel with gentle fizz and no alcohol heat or astringency noticed.

O- The nice fruity wine characteristic is not really sour or funky with like a typical Berlinner Wiesse but it does have a very full flavor for such a low ABV. This would pair nicely with warm weather.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Batch #51.

Appearance - Pinkish purple with a small white head. Like a carbonated Arbor Mist. Classy.

Smell - Wheaty grain and a hint of acidity. No blueberry, really. Maybe a hint of berry, but not what I'd call blueberry. Hint of funky cheese. I know this is the new batch, but it's weird anyway.

Taste - Lightly tart. Wheat grain. Berry tartness. Dry finish.

Mouthfeel - Very light. Medium carbonation.

Overall - Doesn't taste like much, but it doesn't have any of the weird flavors that the nose has.

Poured into a tulip glass, Blue Lady is a slightly murky dark scarlet purple blueberry juice color. An ample cap of pinkish pastel foam rises a few inches to the rim and soon settles to a layer on the surface. Minimal lacing, but solid head retention.

Musky, vinous aroma, blueberry and washed cheese rind. Not sure what to expect really, but it's pretty interesting and complex. Edit: Two subsequent bottles smelled pretty bad. More of a putrid off note like spoiled cheese. Averaging scores for the smell.

Tart and puckering as advertised, full on blueberry yogurt flavors, tannic fruit skins, light acid. Finishes pretty clean and light bodied, traditional for the style in that respect. Pretty cool hybrid fruited Berliner here, seems to take on lots of character from the fruit itself. A promising portent of things to come, namely the raspberry and peach varieties...

Batch #51 with blue wax.

Pours dark pink/purple with just a few bubbles of fizzy white head fading quickly. Little retention or lacing, but fizzy bubbles throughout. Carbonation looks good for the style.

Tart blueberry and raspberry on the nose with a slight wheat tanginess and a touch of sourness.

Tart berry again at the front of the palate enhanced by the fizzy carbonation. Crackery, grainy wheat leading into a somewhat dry finish with a little bit of earthy funkiness. Spot on for a berliner, it's mildly sour tart, while still being light and not overpowering.

Very light bodied and prickly carbonation. Goes down easily.

Nice take on the style and liking just about everything I've had from Pipeworks so far. The fruit could stand out a bit more, but that is nitpicking. I've had a slew of bad berliners recently so it's nice to have one done right. Light and effervescent and tart, but not overly so. Well done!

*Note* Didn't have any of Batch 31 which was apparently bad so no comparison possible, but give this one a shot. The reviews should be higher after more of them are from the new batch.

Cheers to Goblinmunkey7 for sharing this beer

Consumed 2/8/13

Appearance: A charming light purple, with some nice red and pink tones - mostly clear - light pink head, keeps a decent cap and a nice ring - some nice splotches of lacing - yup, it's pretty

Smell: At first, it genuinely smells like a strange, funky cheese, but it gets more pleasant if it warms - some weird vegetable aromas and chewy wood - light blueberry - some mild funkiness - tart, mellow

Taste: Funky weirdness in a good way - blueberry flesh, blueberry skins - chewy wood, I'm guessing this was aged on oak - some yeast and vinegar-like flavors - some vague acidic qualities - overall, kind of tastes like a light sour, but more fresh - some residual sweetness in the finish

Mouthfeel: Light body, nicely carbonated, very drinkable, but a bit watery

Overall: An interesting use of blueberries and funk

As mentioned above, this kind of tastes like a light sour beer. It also kind of tastes like watered down juice... but in an okay way. It's very interesting, and easy to drink. I would definitely drink this again, even with the odd cheese aroma.

750ml, batch 51, blue wax.

A: Reddish purple with a soft light purple head.

S: Aroma is dominated by the blueberries, which are wonderful and sweet. Reminds me of good jarred blueberry preserves. Some bready malt supports the fruit.

T: Slightly tart blueberry, followed by a wave of crisp, pleasing wheat. Not sour by any means, but the slight tartness is there.

M: Light-bodied with light carbonation. Could use a bit more carbonation.

O: The aroma on this beer is fantastic if you like blueberries. The taste and feel aren't as impressive, but are fine for the job.
