Red-waxed bomber, Batch 41, served in a stemless red wine glass.

A - Pitch black, impenetrable, crowned w a finger of sand-colored foam. Decent legs with spotty lacing.

S - Dark chocolate, figs, and espresso and a hint of earthy, grassy hops. As w other Pipeworks offerings, the nose hits all the right notes, but isn't as strong overall as i feel is possible.

T - Opens up identical to the nose, but as the drink continues, the flavor profile becomes more complex, w dried berries and cherries emerging, along w more bittersweet cocoa, blackstrap molasses, and just enough citrus and piney hops to provide a bit of needed balance. Everything is held in balance as the brew warms, and the finish is long, roasty, and a bit sweet without being cloying.

M - Thick, oily, and sticky. Everything i look for in the style, in other words.

I really hope to get my hands on another bottle or two for cellaring purposes. I can only imagine this improving w time, and it's already a monster. Don't sleep on this one if you're in the Chi.

A big, creamy imperial stout. Pretty straightforward in smell and taste. Roasted malts, hints of coffee and chocolate, and contrary to what I've seen in other reviews, only a touch of alcohol in the taste. The beauty of this is the rich, creamy mouthfeel. Very dense. Not the most unique imperial stout, but an outstanding version with all the classic characteristics.

22oz bottle into 25oz snifter. Thanks to JulianC for this one.

A: Pours a thick inky black color with a half-finger of bubbly dark brown head that faded into a faint scum.
S: Slight anise, slightly metallic, notes of volatile booze, and faint chocolate. Booze is a bit harsh. There is a mild roasted quality overall.
T: Much smoother than the nose let on. I get creamy and rich flavors of deep roasted malt, chocolate milkshake, sticky caramel and brown sugar, and a touch of anise and vanilla ice-cream in the finish. The aftertaste is roasted and lingering, but I also get some of the harsh booze from the nose. There's a bit of char smoky char in there is well.
M: Full body, fairly chewy mouthfeel, fluffy carbonation, and a shot of harsh booze. Booze isn’t warming or alcoholic, its more harsh and acetonic, but it does die down a but as the beer reaches room temperature.
O: Flavors are very rich and smooth, but the booze is slightly distracting. Good, but could be smoother.

22 oz. bottle, with Batch #414/415 printed on the label. The newest batch of this one from the guys over at Pipeworks; my first encounter with their regular Pipeworks Abduction stout, after trying nearly all of the other variants of this beer, I am finally excited to have the original.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter.

A - Its pours an inky black body, sludgy, with only about a finger of dark mocha head that leaves behind thick bubbly lacing. Looks pretty nice.

S - The smell carries a musty, buttery sort of yeast aroma up front, alcohol fumes, dark bitter roastiness, cocoa / chocolate, coffee, cream / lactose, notes of dark fruits - cherry, dates, raisins.

T - Taste follows the nose: bitter chocolate / coffee bean roast, cocoa, notes of char, light tart dark fruit presence.

M - The feel is smooth, creamy, sugary, and sticky. Light warming alcohol, but not hot. This thing drinks exceptionally smooth, I can only imagine how it would taste with some serious time on it.

Overall, clearly a winning successor to all of the variants. A nice stout, but I'm glad that they decided to add onto this base beer. I guess after trying all the others, I am just spoiled at this point. Delicious, but not as memorable as some of the other incarnations.

Pipeworks Abduction ---4/5.
