750mL bottle poured into a stemmed glass. Batch #83

(A)- Pours a pale rose red color. Some deeper ruby red hints here and there due to its slight haziness. Produced a nice cap of white froth with surprising retention.

(S)- A hugely juicy raspberry bush nose. Giant clumps of deep but tart raspberries meets some subtlely earthy biscuit-like earth. Quite dry on the finish.

(T)- Very dry. Extremely dry actually with subtle raspberry fruit acidity. The slightest hint of a stony biscuity wheat flavors.

(M)- A superb crispness and refreshing quality to it. The light fruity acidity adds well the the overall feel and flavor of the beer. Extremely dry on the finish.

(O)- I think I like this better than their blueberry berliner. The fruit is a bit better integrated and a more balanced yet refreshing profile overall. My only complaint is it borderlines as a fruit lambic versus a purer berliner weiss.

Bottle (2013)

Acquired via trade
Thanks, AJDePaul!

A murky light raspberry in color. Small pink head. Leaves the glass fairly clean on the way down. Looks delicious.

Lots of bright, fresh raspberry character. Just the tiniest bit of cheese as well. Nice.

The flavor is perhaps the most thirst quenching, gulpable beer I've had. This just goes down so incredibly smooth. Raspberry, light wheat, and just a bit of sour character make for a fantastically delicious low ABV gulper.

Medium bodied with low carbonation.

Crushable.

750ml bottle (batch 83) into a Maine Beer Company tumbler.

A: Pinkish-red grapefruit flesh colored body with a small white head.

S: Sweet raspberry flesh, light wheat, a bit of lactic acid in the nose.

T: Taste brings dry, tart raspberry, a quick wave of puckering lactic acidity, pleasant and slightly sweet cereal grain and wheat in the finish. The fruit is much drier and less sweet than it is in the nose.

M: Light-bodied with moderate carbonation.

O: I actually like Blue Lady a bit better than this, but this is still tasty and worth picking up when you can find it.

750ml, Batch 83
Hill Farmstead wine glass

A: Cloudy blush pink color. Basically no head. Just a collar of bright white that sticks around. Doesn't leave much lacing.

S: Smells I sweet tart raspberries. Some lactic yogurt notes. Smells light and fruity.

T: Nice light raspberry tartness on tip of tongue. Tickles the tongue. Lots of sweetness from those berries. Almost a creamy aspect. Finish is dry.

M: Light leading to medium due to malts sweetness.

Tasted with the group, side-by-side with the other three Pipeworks Berliners. 3/4. Looking forward to this one the most, as I'm a huge raspberry fan. Pours a dull, grapefruit-tinted mixture of pink and red - the head is with with an ever-so-slight pink-ish hue. The smell is pretty great - fresh raspberries, lively and seemingly pretty tart on the nose alone. A bit of strawberry and cherry, too, but maybe I'm just pulling those out of my ass. The aroma is a bit one-dimensional, but it delivers what it said it would deliver - raspberries. So I'm a happy man.

The taste hits hard with a nice dose of sour raspberries - a sharp tartness attacks the tongue immediately, even enough so to cause a slight pucker and some extra salivation in your glands. This was definitely the most sour/tart of the four Pipeworks Berliners. The fruit has a nice juiciness to go along with the tart flavors, and it eventually fades into a more fruit "skin" type of flavor with a touch of sweetness and an overall dry finish. Again, lots of raspberries and some lighter "berry" fruit flavors in the aftertaste. Just as the rest, this one had a thin body with medium-high carbonation.

Pretty good, definitely my favorite of the four Berliners, but as already mentioned - I'm slightly biased towards raspberries. Nice fruity flavor, nice up-front tartness, and very easy to throw back. Refreshing, crispy, tasty.

Very clear, vibrant pink with a big lightly pink-ish head. Lots of raspberry aroma and taste with light dry, earthy brett notes. Tart, but not excessively, despite the amount of raspberry flavor. Moderate carbonation, light and crisp. Easy to drink, a favorite of the day.

Bottle from buzze40, 750ml into a tulip. Batch 39.

Bright pink, with a pinkish white head. Moderate retention and decent lacing. Nose has bright, fresh raspberry notes, yogurt and lactic character. Sharp wheat as well. Taste has sharp tartness off the bat and tart raspberry/cranberry juice. Sharp wheat character comes through mid palate, with gentle fruit character and mild tartness well into the finish. Medium light palate, high carbonation. A very nice fruited Berliner, and having this in the dead of winter probably doesn't do this justice.

750 of batch # 39 poured into Duvel tulip glass.

Appearance: light cherry red almost pink bodied beer with a towering 3 fingers of head. Drops quickly to a thin cap. Almost no lacing sticks to the side of the glass, it just slides right down the glass.

Smell: fresh and juicy raspberries. A touch of musty funk.

Taste: moderately tart and fruit forward beer. Really fresh and juicy raspberries with a hint of cranberries and lemon. A grainy cereal note in the middle of the beer. Also a hint of musty hay noted in the aftertaste. Clean finish with a little touch of tart raspberries with a quick acidic bite.

Mouthfeel: light body and moderate carbonation. Crisp, refreshing, and prickley carbonation. Light and clean beer. A "seltzer like" and moderately dry mouthfeel to this beer.

Overall: This beer really surprised me and I enjoyed it quite a bit. The focus is definately on the raspberries. I would seriously consider this beer as an alternative to a table beer that would normally hold up to alot of different and deverse food pairings from appetizers, cheese, salads, light pasta dishes, sushi/seafood, and even some desserts. I dont know alot about a berliner wiess style beer, but this beer has captured my interest. Pipeworks did a good job with this beer. I would not hesitate to pick up another bottle of this beer. Its a creative concept that Pipeworks had here to just brew the berliner wiess with raspberries instead of serving it with the traditional raspberry syrup.

From Preismj in a blind 12 bottle shipper (which showed up w/ 13 selections) filled with a number of excellent Pipeworks bottles! 750ml split two-ways, into wine glasses.

So much of this is amazing. The brite, vibrant color; fluorescent raspberry capped with egg-white head. The aroma is robust and faintly sour.

The flavor, in comparison, is flat. There is a strong raspberry flavor that muddles anything else. I'm a huge fan of berliner-style thanks to healthy doses of advocacy from StakeM and crew and having had a better than decent sampling of the styleI would say this is better than average but not top-tier.

Excellent mouthfeel but the one-dimensional flavor negates all of the other excellent qualities.

Thanks to Adam for sharing this bottle.

A - Translucent strawberry red with half an inch of white head

S - Fresh raspberry puree and some sweet bready aroma. Fairly one-dimensional nose but a very inviting nose.

T - Raspberry up front with a crisp tartness that completely falls off and finishes with a weak baking soda flavour. Very light overall. Not much character.

M - Light body. Slightly creamy. Light to moderate carbonation.

O - This was a bit of an odd beer. I descibed it as a good palate cleanser to the tasting group.

Poured with a large frothy light pink head that dissipates completely.
The color is a gorgeous raspberry.

The aroma can be simply described as fresh raspberries.

The flavor starts with light raspberry notes, followed by a brief but sharp tart acidity, then leaves a sort of wheat flavor that makes me think of cereal.

The feel is thin, but tingles the tongue at first then leaves dry.

Overall, this is my favorite of the BW's by Pipeworks. Everything is in line with a solid BW. The smell makes me think of Frankenberry or a box of Special K "Red Berries" cereal.

Batch # 39.

Pours a murky light red with a foamy reddish-white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, yeast, and raspberries. Taste is much the same with a mild vomit or bile note on the finish. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but the flavor on the finish throws me off a bit.

A: pours a beautiful light rose color, nice head with very light lacing.

S: well balanced raspberry fragrance, not overpowering. Slight grapefruit nose.

T: light and refreshing, would be really nice on warm summer evening.

M: lighter than my normal beer of choice, maybe slightly under carbonated .

O: recommended to drink fresh, was told when I bought it, it had been bottled 2 days before.

Will definitely buy this again next summer

Batch 39
A- This beer pours a slightly hazy color of red jello with a thick film of pink boiling away to a thick ring and a tight fizz racing to the surface.

S- The fresh tart raspberries has a raw barley grain note to follow and a faint field corn and funk hint starts to come through. There is also a nice note of raw wile honey that comes through as it opens up.

T- the juicy dry tart raspberries flavor is crisp and clean with a cranberry flavor coming through as it opens and a dry jammy flavor in the finish.

M- The light mouthfeel has a full fizz but only a gentle pucker of astringency and no alcohol heat noticed.

O- This is a nice crisp fruity beer with hints of berliner weisse funk. Very drinkable.

Bottle into a tulip.

A - Pours a pinkish orange with more than two fingers of light pink foam. Head quickly fades to a thin cap.

S - Aroma alternates between a huge amount of fresh raspberries with a slightly jammy aspect, and mostly pleasant funk. There is one aroma that is pretty off-putting, which I can't quite identify, but it isn't prevalent enough to be that much of a negative.

T - Considerable tartness starts off the taste, with raspberry and light lemon. Taste is light with a clean finish. Some very light wheat and funk round out the taste. Very nice.

M - Light, crisp mouthfeel with a very clean finish.

O - Well done Berliner. Wish more of the awesome raspberry aroma was also found in the taste, but this is very good.

750 ml bottle
Batch #39
Served in a Teku

A: Pours a hazy pink grapefruit color with a light pinkish white head. A considerable amount of head on the pour.

S: Raspberries, tart fruit, a bit of sour/grapefruit notes.

T: Clean. Crisp. A nice raspberry, lemon, acidic fruit taste that finishes with a nice tartness. A very slight wheat malt backbone.

M: Champaign/gueze like effervescence coats the mouth. Very clean feel that finishes with a nice mild pucker.

O: A well balanced Berliner with just the right amount of fruit. The Raspberries were not overpowering but definitely at the front. There was also a slight wheat component that really helped balance this beer nicely. It has a perfect clean, crisp tartness that you'd want in a BW. Overall a very good beer.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a Lost Abbey chalice.

A- pours a dark pink with a 2 finger light pink head. Some small bubbles of lacing remain on the glass.

S- sour mash, some funky cheese (nowhere near the off-putting aroma of Blue Lady though), and some light raspberry.

T- puckering pale malts, sour raspberries and acidic tart citrus.

M- light body and high carbonation. Very effervescent and acidic but still easy to drink.

O- 6/10 sourness. Very nice beer. More tart than I expected, and enjoyed, with some raspberry notes to balance the sour mash.

750 ml bottle served in a GI chalice. Batch #39.

A: Pours a hazy grapefruit color with a frothy light pink head forming on the pour. It recedes slowly to a thin wispy collar.

S: Seedy raspberry sweetness, almost like jam, with a white bread and wheat body to it. Very subtle tartness to this guy as well.

T: A little more puckering tartness to the body. Raspberry jam, cracked wheat, and some mild lemon acidity. The finish is slightly tart with a little bit raspberry kicking back in.

M: Lightly bodied with a nice effervescence to it. Prickly carb with a residual raspberry flavor that lingers ever so slightly on the palate.

O: Greatly refreshing with the right amount of raspberry sweetness and tartness. The wheat played a nice role in balancing out the fruit as well.

Bottle from West Lakeview Liquors. Served in a Pipeworks snifter.

A - Two fingers of pink foam settle to a thick cap, leaving behind minimal lacework. Body is a lightly hazed watermelon red in color, with visible streams of bubbles. A touch more lace and this would be perfect.

S - Smells like raspberries and lactic acidity. There's a little bit of chaffed wheat in there as well. Pleasant, but doesn't erupt from the glass.

T - Tastes like raspberries and lemons, but some what under-ripe and seed-heavy. Plenty of lactic acidity and a fairly mild wheat flavor. Finishes tart, but not overly puckering.

M - Zesty carbonation, medium-light body, grainy and tannic texture, and a fairly dry finish. Perhaps a touch watery, but not excessively so for 4%.

D - I easily drank a 750ml bottle on my own. It's a solidly executed Berliner that could use a bit more ripe raspberry flavor for my tastes. Thankfully it didn't suffer from the cheese aroma that Blue Lady did, so I'm confident the Pipeworks guys have figured out their problems.

The bottle art is very clever and seductive (an attractive red headed female holding a stack of books)... and I am generally a fan of a good Berliner Weiss, so I decided to pick up a bottle of this.

A - Poured from a 750ml bottle into a wine glass. Wow, this is a really visually appealing beer! It pours a bright redish pink color with a 1 finger white head that fades after about a minute. I couldn't get over how nice the color looks sitting in the glass though. Almost like a Rose champagne.

S - Like tart, fresh picked raspberries.

T - Plenty of sour tartness up front that makes your mouth water, but the fresh raspberries really shine through. The raspberry taste is much different and fresher tasting than any other framboise that I've had too. Very interesting and refreshing.

M - The mouth feel was light and refreshing. But I feel like it lacked the finer carbonation that is found in some of the other sour beers and Berliner Weissbier's out there. Nonetheless, this was an awesome beer.

O - Recommended. Especially if you are a raspberry fan... you won't be disappointed.

Served in a shaker pint glass.

The final beer of the day, from Clybourn to Mundelein. Damn. Anyway, this stuff pours a clear magenta topped by a finger of light pink-white foam. The nose comprises tart raspberry must and a touch of what seems like vague wheat way the hell in the background. make no mistake: the raspberries are the stars here. The taste brings in more of the same, though the tartness overshoots the berry-ness, creating a feeling of just straight and general tartness. I was looking forward to some actual raspberry flavor, but was stymied. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a decidedly dry finish. Overall, a solid Berliner, but the raspberries, despite being in control, don't exert their berry-forward selves throughout. Still enjoyable, though...

A: cloudy bright fuschia pink. Forms a large slightly gray, light pink head that holds steady for a minute before collapsing to not much more than a ring around the edge.

S: aroma is primarily unsweetened raspberries and tart lemon but there are also notes of aspirin and something I can only describe as a vague sense of decomposition.

T: taste is nice. Tart raspberries, light lemon. Really not a whole lot going on with this. Just lightly tart raspberries.

M: Light bodied, crisp and tart, but not overly sour. Medium-heavy carbonation.

O: Overall a good beer. Very drinkable. And while it's not the best Berliner I've had, it's certainly not the worst.

Into a tumbler glass it pours pink, with a pastel pink foam. Can't look much better for a beer aged on fresh raspberries. Sticky foam texture, spotty lace, long lasting head. Slightly murky though the color is just gorgeous.

Raspberry aroma, not sweet, slightly veering into sourdough territory from the lactic acid bacteria.

Ample tartness, seedy raspberry tannin, dry finish. Middle is wheaty and clean but the feel is a little watery. Could be more crisp, it's a little thin bodied at first, but not out of place for the style. Tart raspberry through and through. Fruity and drinkable, some light minerals and sourdough from the yeast. A Berliner with the classic Himbeere flavor built right in.
