Our Imperial IPA hopped with so many, really just so many, pounds of Citra hops is one of our favorites to brew, mostly because it's one of our favorites to drink. Cheers! Drink early and often.

Bottle dated 5/1/14 into an IPA glass.

Look: much darker than expected—red-tinged brownish orange. By looks alone, I'd expect this to be a malt-focused beer. Almost no head.

Smell: bright and citrusy. A layer of cotton candy sweetness.

Taste: tangy sweet dankness. If someone told me this was a mildly spoiled Fanta Orange soda, I might believe it. Okay, maybe not quite, but almost.

Feel: light-to-medium body. Fizzy.

Overall: this is one of those beers where the sweetness is borderline too much for me (Chillwave also comes to mind). It's not unenjoyable, but it's almost more of an alcoholic soda than a beer. Being under 3 weeks old, I doubt it's an issue of freshness. Delicious nonetheless.

Batch 503/504 (less than a month from the brew date)

So far from a world-class, top 250 beer it makes me sad. Malt bomb, none of that Citra deliciousness you want.

Been searching for this one for a while, so very pleased to finally get to try it. I've had and liked several of the more popular and highly rated DIPAs out there, so I know what I'm looking for. This one doesn't quite meet my expectations or the hype, but it's still pretty decent. In true Pipeworks tradition, this is a very big, boozy beer. Alcohol is not hidden very well. I think this bottle is only 5 days old, but the hops don't really "pop" like I thought they would. There's also a very malty, syrupy finish to the beer which I'm not fond of. This one reminds me most of Double Sunshine or Hopslam. Good beer, worth seeking out, but not a world-class DIPA in my book.

Bottle of Citra Ninja into FFF Teku

A - Deep, hazy orange with a light brown accents. Off-white rocky head with small layer of foam.

S - Loads of citrus hops (tangerine and orange) with slight grassy aspect to it. Slight candied orange peel as well. Drink it on the warmer end because as it warms up, the nose gets really good.

T - Loads of citrus hops that have orange, tangerine, lemon, and other citrus hops. As it carries on, there is a big hit of grapefruit and pine that leave a slight bitter aspect to cut the sweetness. There is a light grassy aspect as well. There is a slight boozy kick near the finish

M - Thick body with a slight syrupiness to it. Good amount of carbonation as well. The finish leaves a hop resin on the tongue and is slightly astringent.

O - Solid IPA with loads of Citra flavor. Good citrus flavor with tangerine and orange up front, a touch of grassy hops and slight bitterness. Definitely a great offering from Pipeworks.

Batch 54
(Served in a Teku)

A- This beer pours a clear deep copper glow with a wall of microbubbles gliding to the surface and a sticky beige cream that that last and last.

S- The big juicy green hops have a bright citrus with a slight mint hint to them that comes through even during the pour.

T- The big juicy dry citrus hops flavor has some woody hop flavors to and a nice pineapple weed hop flavor in the finish. There is a gentle bitterness in the slightly dry finish and only a full pineapple weed pungency lingers. There is a soft slightly sweet pale malt flavor underneath that offers nice support.

M- The medium-light mouthfeel has a nice gentle fizz that boost the hops in the finish and no real alcohol heat is noticed.

O- This beer is a full hop bomb with only a slight bitterness and leans just a touch toward the dry side making it very drinkable and having a wonderful hop complexity. The depth seeps to grow as it opens up and it is very drinkable, especially for such a big beer.

Don’t review quite as much as I used to, but needed to here for two reasons…
1) A shout out and thanks to Masterski for sending this my way. An unexpected delight!
2) The beer is awesome.

A nice cap of light tan foam sits atop the pint glass and fades to some sudsy lace. A orange/amber color that is exactly the color of the sweater I am now wearing.

Aroma is fantasic. Tropical burst with some freshly cut grass and chive. Just awesome. A hint of the juicy notes to come.

Juicy, juicy, tropical and wonderful. The chives and grass are evident in the flavor as well. Some nice herbal notes and a wonderful finish. Thought about white pepper now and again. A slight sense of the raised abv.

Slick and juicy.

Great beer sent by a great BA member. I am going to milk this 22oz bomber for all it’s worth. Well done Piperworks.

Batch #110. Pours slightly hazy, dark orange. One finger white head. Minimal lacing. Aroma is pineapple and oranges. Somewhat floral. Flavor is mostly citrus and tropical fruit, pine and a kinda graininess. Heavy body with super creamy carbonation. Very bitter finish. Excellent balance between the high hops and heavy malts. Absolutely loved this beer.

Bottle (2013)

Acquired via trade
Thanks, Hugonaut13!

A very sticky dark copper in color. Thin khaki head. Sticky lined lacing down the glass.

Melon, citrus (grapefruit), and some mild pine and dank marijuana in the aroma. Those are all good things.

The flavor translates well--impressive, just like the aroma with moderate bitterness. The melon and grapefruit flavors rise above the marijuana and pine notes. The flavors, unfortunately, seemed to come apart somewhat as the beer warmed, with more harsh alcohol present on the finish. That being said, it wasn't distracting, but my initial sniffs and sips were better than the ones following.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

An excellent DIPA. Would drink again.

This thing stinks. First thing I smell is B.O. and maybe a cat litter box IMO. My wife doesn't smell it though. But hold onto your lugnuts!! Batch #59

The citra hops are definitely pronounced. Juicy, piney, grapefruit pith embrace the palate. No onion aftertaste, just nice and bitter. Gotta lave da bitta beer!

Kinda reminds me of the saying 'the stinkier the cheese, the better'. Barely taste the 9.5 ABV, but it provides fine comfort. When u can't find FFF Zombie Dust, this is your definite DIPA goto! I will be buying more!!

22 oz bottle batch 535/536 ...just released this week FRESH

A- Hazy orange with thin white head
S- WOW, starts to hit you right away with tropical fruit. Mango, peach, nectarine, citrus.
T- Again, amazing. Citrus zest/peel. Juicy.
M- Thin to medium. Easy drinking.

O- This is one amazing IIPA (9.5%). If you like the tropical fruit juiciness, this is as good as it gets.

The citra ninja is a beautiful offering from pipeworks. The beer poured a clear rich copper with white head that is leaving a spotty lace. The scent was typical of citra beers orange peel citrus mixed with pine and touch of spice. The taste follows the scent. The m outhfeel is full body with good carbonation. Overall...YUMMY!

I have had many IPA's that say they have used Citra hop's. But this is the first time I have had a beer that the brewery didn't go light on the Citra, Pipeworks Brewery has made a big statement with this beer and it a big WOW! This is a beautiful beer and I wish I could have bought more.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep copper. Hazy body. Doesn't pour with much head at all. Just a slight welling of bubbles at the end. No head. Some lacing, but that's all.

Smell - Citrus and grapefruit hop. Very malty. Buttery, too, which is the only thing I can smell after a while.

Taste - Much hoppier here, but fairly abrasive. Orange hop. Tons of caramel malt, but it dries out quickly with a boozy bite. Very bitter in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Boozy, harsh, a little sweet. Very dry.

Overall - How is this rated well at all? My bottle is fresh, but tastes old.

Light rusty orange with a fluffy and dense white head. No lacing.

There's a load of citrus aromas... Grapefruit, mandarin orange, and papaya. It has a sweet juicy scent to it.

No doubt this is a showcase of citra. Tropical fruits with a heavy caramel backbone. There's a fusel spice finish.

Mouthfeel is sticky and juicy. Medium body with moderate carbonation.

It's bursting with aroma and flavor. If you like citrus, you'll love this.

Rust orange in appearance and absolutely stunningly bright orange in direct sunlight, nothing more inviting in an IPA for me.

An abundance of citrus punishes the nostrils at first whiff, though not entirely brewed with Citra hops, they definitely highlight this hop spectacularly.

My oh my! Instantly floored by this delightful IPA. Citrus, hops, bitter, perfectly balanced. The high ABV ain't bad either!

Mouthfeel is bitter with hop deliciousness and well carbonated all balanced perfectly.

Overall, this is absolutely everything I look for in an IPA, hands down the best Illinois born IIPA!

The coloring was orange but it took a reddish hue in low light so that the two colors had a sunset appearance. The head was thick and foamy with a good white color.

The scent is very creamy, with resinous piney hops and a butterscotch aroma. There is some fruity scents like grapefruit and tangerines.

My first impression of the taste was buttered popcorn with an actual butter taste and a bready malty underpinning. There is then a floral hop flavor that ends the taste.

No one else in my tasting group picked up on the buttery taste and I know that my palate doesn't do well with large doses of Citra. All I can be is honest in my personal taste and I did not receive this well.

batch 59

a: copper. medium sized frothy white head

s: predominantly citrus (shock!). grapefruit, mango, orange, tangerine. Great aroma.

t: Starts with a citrusy hop wave (similar to aroma - grapefruit, mango, orange & tangerine). Midway through malts come in to join the hops through the finish. FInishes with a nice bit of bitterness.

m: medium body. moderate carbonation.

o: Great DIPA from Pipeworks. I have it a tad lower than NvU but this juicy, citrusy hop explosion makes for a great beer. Looking forward to having this again.

Bright saturated orange with slowly rising trails of carbonation, a thick head of white foam that has a meringue-like texture sits on the surface, slowly coating the glass with sheets of lacing. Lasting retention, looks really nice.

Aroma is bursting with sweet tangerine, bitter orange peel, hints of tropical mango earthiness. Despite the hop onslaught, some pale malt bleeds through underneath also.

Flavor is slightly less intense, but still a very concentrated citrus burst, orange and tangerine, bitter rinds and pith certainly. Middle has some hints of pale malt and green botanicals, a moderate hop bitterness but never truly palate-destroying which is nice. Medium bodied, never too sweet or bitter, nicely balanced and drinkable. It reminds me of a tweaked Double Daisy Cutter with a little more body and heavier citrus presence. Really good stuff, and I hope this gets put into regular rotation alongside Ninja vs. Unicorn.

Poured from bomber into a pint glass. Pours a dark orange color with a good head.

Jumping out of the glass and jam packed with aromas of grapefruits, citrus, florals, hops and guava. Great depth with the citra hops.

Medium/full bodied with a very smooth feel. Balanced with very good flavors of guava, grapefruit, hops, and some tropical citrus.

Yea, this rocks. NvU with citra hops was always gonna be a winner, and it doesn't disappoint.

Thanks to Robbie for this bottle! Batch #109. Bottled on ???
Poured in to tulip.

A - Slightly hazy golden orange with half a finger of dirty white head.

S - Massive fresh tropical fruit aroma of mango, peach, pineapple, grapefruit and pine. Some honey sweetness in the background.

T - A big bitterness up front that is complimented by fresh mango, peach, pineapple, grapefruit and pine flavours. A perfect amount of honey sweetness in the background.

M - Medium body, creamy. Sticky. Moderate carbonation.

Bottle from batch 176 poured into a tulip glass. Beer pours a dark orange/copper with a little haze and three fingers of off white head of mostly larger bubbles. Head leaves light lacing as it dissipates.

Nose is sweet citrus, orange and grapefruit, pineapple, light pine. Not much malt in this as the hops really come through.

Blast of bitterness on first taste, bitter citrus peel and pine, with some sweeter tropical pineapple and mango and herbal hops mid tongue. A bit of alcohol sweetness with some caramel malt. Dry lingering finish of bitter citrus peel.

Medium body with good carbonation, very sharp on the tongue and really dries it out. A bit of alcohol warmth in the back of the throat after a sip but otherwise easy to drink.

Murky, dark orange, with a two finger head that was off white and laced a ton. Aroma was undeniably Citra: big juicy citrus fruits, orange, mango, grapefruit, touches of caramel. Pretty spot on with the taste as well, boasting tons of citrus like orange, tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple. Bitterness was medium, body was full with an oily creaminess, but not too heavy. Sipped pretty easy, finished cleanly on the palate. Couldn't really detect any booze.

Quite the nice nightlight of the Citra hop. I'll be savoring another bottle tomorrow...

Big thanks to blastbeats for this one!

Glowing anber/caramel body loaded with steady beading, a silky off-white head drenches the glass with lace... classic looking IIPA.

Lush tropical fruits melded with juicy citric notes... mango, pineapple... reminiscent of Sculpin in this regard I think. Lovely.

A smooth sense of bitterness keeps things dry without interfering with the fresh hop flavors... loads of bittersweet fruit with a touch of alcohol that mimics the bitter mouthfeel.

Great stuff. Thanks for the opportunity to give this one a try Evan!

1 PINT 6FL. OZ. bottle
Served in a tulip glass
Batch 175

A - It pours bronze in color with golden highlights. A normal pour yielded a half glass of beige head.

S - I get a caramel, almost candy corn smell at first. Then I get some nostril piercing citrus.

T - The taste is loaded with bitterness. It is like biting into a grapefruit and chasing it with a fistful of pine needles. However, I do get some sips that have a fleeting candy-like sweetness.

M - Medium

O - I don't know about this beer. It is pretty bitter like a west coast ipa, but that sweetness that comes in every now and then is not good. It almost tastes like it is old, but it was bottled July 26. I'm going to assume this is a bad batch because this candy corn flavor and aroma can't be intentional.

Poured into a Funky Buddha Brewery snifter. Sticker on the bottle says 09/05/14.

A- Pours a reddish amber color with a 1/4 inch off-white head that retains decently before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a half sheet of sheer surface foam. Somewhat resilient lacing leaves small clots behind.

S- Wonderful citrus hop aroma with a nice sweet malt backing.

T- Hop flavor comes in and is followed by a moderate bitterness plus that sweet malt really rounds everything out so well. Kind of reminds me of a hoppy red ale. Very smooth for the ABV as I would never guess this is 9.5%

M- Quite oily and slightly sharp from the hops. Medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the fuller side.

O- What I admire about Pipeworks' IPAs is that they're somehow able to pack a whole lot of hop flavor into the beer without there being an abundant amount of bitterness. Outstanding.
