Served in an Ohio State shaker pint glass.

An explosion of variously-fruited Berliner weisses? Nice. This one pours a hazy salmon (and I just recently had some smoked salmon nigiri at a nearby sushi joint, so, yeah, I can tell it's pretty damn close, baby) topped by over a finger of pink-white foam. The nose comprises light cranberry and very light grassy wheat. Considering the fruiting and the style, things are strangely diffuse. The taste basically amounts to a mildly tart cranberry juice, though definitely thinner than actual juice. The body is a very light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a drying finish. Overall, this was a surprisingly boring offering, one that had very little character beyond the meek cranberry. They can't all be winners, I suppose...

Served in a wide-mouth chalice just for fun, closest I had to the traditional Berliner Kindl Weisse glass.

Color is an electric kool-aid reddish pink, with a finger of foam that melts away quickly, fading into an island of patchy skim, and a crescent shape of bubbles clinging to the opposite side of the glass.

Tart cranberry and vague wheaty aroma, some cranberry juice.

Crisp and puckering sourness, seems a touch more intense than Blue Lady & Well Read, but in the same ballpark. Simple and clean, more tart cranberry up front, finishing dry with some fleeting aftertastes of cranberry and sourdough yeast. No off flavors to speak of. Would make a nice apertif or sunny day quencher. Made a milkshake by blending half cup of Cranpire, half cup of cranberry sauce, 3 tbsp cream cheese, and 1/2 tbsp of strawberry vanilla sugar, and it tasted like cranberry cheesecake.

Served in a wine glass at Julie's place.

A - White foam settles to a thick collar, wisps, and splotches of lace. Salmon pink, lightly hazed body.

S - Cranberry and lactic tartness, with an undercurrent of wheat. Reminds me a little of spritzy cranberry juice, but with a hint of pink grapefruit juice as well. The fruit isn't as prominent as in Pipeworks' other fruited Berliners.

T - Taste is pretty similar, with a mix of lactic tang, vanilla, and cranberry, with a bit of grainy wheat in the background. Again, not as fruit-forward as Blue Lady or Well Read Temptress, but nicely integrated all the same.

M - Pleasant and spritzy carbonation, medium-light body, and a crisp, dry finish. Goes down really easily.

D - A refreshing Christmas themed beer that I've already enjoyed a few times. You could easily put back an entire 750ml bottle on your own. Might be my least favorite of this series, but if you really like cranberries you may feel otherwise.

(Served in a tulip glass)
Batch 58

A-This beer pours a hazy deep red with a strawberry blonde head of foam that last a good bit and a strong carbonation.

S- The slightly earthy cranberry fruit is fresh with a raw honey note growing as the beer opens. There is a mellow corn note underneath the fruit that has a slight yeasty tartness to it.

T- The tart fruit is sort of a cranberry soda flavor without the sweetness and a note of dry corn and yeast underneath. The dry tart finish is mostly fruit forward with hints of berliner weissbier underneath.

M- This beer has a light mouthfeel with a crisp finish but no astringency or alcohol.

O- This is a beer that is crisp and light but really has a nice fresh fruit flavor. I wouldn't mind a bit more beer tartness but the fruit is still well supported.

Tasted with the group, side-by-side with the other three Pipeworks Berliners. 4/4. Pours a light sunburst color, orange and murky with a foamy off-white head that fades quickly into nothing. The smell is very, very light on this one - kind of hard to pick up anything right off the bat. After digging for a bit, there are some light cranberry and mixed berry notes underneath, accompanied by a slight astringency. Slight tartness can be perceived from the aroma, too, but not until the beer has warmed up substantially, and by that point, you've probably already taken a sip. The nose remains pretty quiet and underwhelming through most of the beer, though when you pick up anything at all, it does smell pretty good.

The taste has a light tartness to it, probably finishing second in the list of "most sour" between the four Berliners. Mellow cranberry is the heaviest flavor, as it should be. I like the way the cranberry was handled - it was lighter and softer. I was afraid it could be too heavy and syrupy, like Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice or something - good thing it was not. Although, the mellow flavor that it did have definitely could have been more powerful. There's a mild tartness spike, but not enough to pucker. Sweetness flows through to the aftertaste, where I'm picking up a slightly strange "cardboard" flavor. Not exactly off-putting, but I don't really know how to feel about it. It just feels a bit out of place. Thin body, medium-high carbonation.

Again, a decent Berliner, but an underwhelming aroma prevents it from being great. Still tasty and very drinkable, as a Berliner should be. I'd say this one finishes third out of the four Pipeworks Berliners.

A: Pours PINK. Not salmon colored. No, it's a slightly cloudy, pastel pink. Looks sort of like watermelon agua fresca. Forms a smallish lightly pink tinted head that fizzes away fairly quickly leaving just a faint ring around the edge.

S: Aroma is fairly light. Mostly some light cranberry notes and wheat with a bit of yeast in the background.

T: Taste is similar to the aroma. Very lightly flavored. Cranberry and wheat with just a hint of yeasty funk, but really not much else. Mildly sweet-tart. Reminiscent of what I imagine a cranberry flavored soda would taste like.

M: Light bodied. Medium carbonation. Mild tartness.

O: A decent beer whose light body and light flavoring create an incredibly drinkable brew. Might be a nice introduction to the style for some. However, its fairly one note and lacks the character most Berliners have.

big thanks to mjohnson17 for the brew, and yeahnatenelson for the pipeworks berliner glass from the glass bif.

a - poured a soft fizzy pink. looks like pink soda. thin bubbly head that fizzed away quick with a small island of tiny bubbles left on the surface. the sides of the glass are coated with bubbles. looks fairly carbonated!

s - artificial fruit flavoring. cranberry (duh)...more on the natural cranberry edge than the ocean spray edge. fairly thick and a bit cheesy (uh oh, thinking blue lady here).

t - hey, that's not bad at all...cranberry juice. some cheese. pretty drinkable...can i get through the full bottle? i think so. very cranberry juice with a hint of cheese.

m - carbonated, but still somewhat juicelike...cranberry soda anyone? maybe a little cheesiness.

o - overall much better than blue lady (at least the batch i had), but definitely some notes of the cheesiness which takes things down a notch. kind of like cranberry soda, but more natural cranberry as opposed to ocean spray, but there is definite sweetness here to keep things in check.

Bottle (2012)

Thanks for opening this with me, BdubleEdubleRUN!

Hazy dark pink and light ruby with a thin head of white, creamy foam.

Cranberry and mild lactic sour character in the aroma, along with some cheesey funk.

The flavor is similar to the aroma, with definite cranberry character coming through, along with mild sweet, some lactic sour character, and a cheese character I wish wasn't present.

Thin to medium bodied with moderate to near-high carbonation.

Good, but probably my least favorite of Pipeworks berliners to date.

Poured into tulip glass. Appearance is a nice bright pink with nice clarity and minimal white head. Smell starts with acidic cranberry character, reminds me of the cranberry gelatin that comes in a can during the holiday times. There is a bit of wheat and lemon in the background along with a touch of funk which I'm not sure if it belongs in this party. The taste is super tart up front and gives way to a strong cranberry character. That same unwelcome funk comes Next. Now I know that funk has a place in a Berliner, but someone about this tastes a touch off, almost plasticy. Mouthfeel is light and highly carbonated. Overall, a flsvorful brew with a nice presence of cranberries, just has sme weird stuff going on too.
