Our friends south of the equator really have this hop growing thing figured out and we are ecstatic they do. Without them we couldn't brig you Unicorn Galaxy. We built a platform of malted barley and wheat then atop that we constructed our ode to Galaxy hops. The hop character really shines through with aromas and flavors of tropical fruit, tangerine, citrus, passion fruit and fresh cut grass. Drink early, drink often.

Wow! Pipeworks has been getting ridiculous with the amount of beers they've been producing over the past 6 months. Honestly, even as a Chicagoan, I can't keep up with all the new pipeworks out however this is the gem of all the new brews released. I LOVE NINJA VS. UNICORN, however this barely beat it. Very wheaty, which I don't usually like, and hoppy but not too bitter because it had some ridiculous tangerine/pineapple taste in it as well. Pipeworks is on the rise people!

I have tried Ninja vs Unicorn, Unicorn Hits Rock Bottom, and now this Galaxy Unicorn. Galaxy if my favorite of the three. Light in color but no short of tropical citrusy hops. So yummy.

A - Dark hazy orange with a gold undertone. Light white head

S - Tropical fruit nose loaded with pineapple, mango, passion fruit and strawberry. There is light hop bitterness near the backend. Absolutely an amazing nose

T - Up front, there is passion fruit and strawberry. Next comes juicy fresh pineapple. The finish is slight bitter hops that adds some slight bitter zest. Quite the balance between the sweet galaxy hops and light bittering hops

M - Lighter body for a DIPA with low carbonation and a light syrupiness to it. Finish leaves resin on the tongue and a slight astringency from the hops 4.25

O - This is the best PW IPA I've had as it shows the galaxy hops just perfectly. There is so much fresh passion fruit, pineapple and strawberries yet it isn't too sweet as it has some slight hop bitterness.

Pours a dark, hazy orange color with a finger lenth of a white head that goes away slowly and leaves a blanket of lacing. Smells of dank, juicy passionfruit, grapefruit, tangerine, mango, lemon, grass, and some carmel. Taste starts with lots of dank tangerine, mango, and grapefruit. Has a candied sweetness. The middle brings more of the perviously mentioned fruits, as well as passionfruit and a slight carmel sweetness from the malt. The finish is amazingly flavorful. More tropical fruits and passion fruit, accompanied by grapefruit rind, tangerine, blood orange, little grass, and a piney bitterness. The candied and carmel sweetness are there to just slightly balance the hop qualities. High medium body with a creamy and oily texture. Slight heat as it goes down, but that is expected for a 9.5% beer. No alcohol to taste or smell. This may be Pipeworks best double ipa offering. An outstandingly flavorful and drinkable double ipa that shows off the galaxy hop remarkably. Seek this out.

Thanks to edmaher, picked this up in a trade.

Pours an opaque straw color with a decent head.

Smells of citrus and pine, like a glass of grapefruit juice with a pinecone to stir it up.

Taste, bitter citrus, grapefruit, blood orange and pine needles at the finish.

Mouthfeel, almost creamy but thick and malty enough to not make it a one note experience.

Love me some Galaxy hops, I'm a huge fan of this beer and would go out of my way for more

Day fresh.

Holy shit - tropical fruits exploding out of the glass. Mango, peach and tangerine astringency with some strawberry sweetness - incredibly fresh pine and sweet grapefruit. Some honey and sweet caramel/toffee malt at the backbone as well. Taste follows suit - incredibly balanced and not very bitter - certainly intense tasting. Lots of tropical fruit astringency.

Just outstanding - one of the best of their line up next to something hoppy and citra.

A-Cloudy deep orange one finger head with great lacing.

S-Hoppy goodness. Citrus, lemon, slight grass, tropical just plain yummy.

T-Amazing balance. Citrus and tropical notes all over the place. Good bitterness as well.

M-Medium bodied, nice carbonation, some hop resins.

O-Wow. One of the best DIPAs out there. The Galaxy hops are outstanding. This beer is phenomenal. Why did I only buy one?

Batch# 67 poured from the bottle into a Teku glass

The beer pours light orange with a half inch of creamy, white head. The head sits atop the body like a fluffed pillow. It flattens rather quickly and leaves a solid white ring around the sides of the glass.

The aroma is tropical and grassy. Mango, grapefruit and orange are dominant. They all smell freshly cut up. Layers of pineapple in the middle is followed by malty sweetness. The bitterness is surprisingly muted in the nose.

The taste brings more of the same tropical and citrusy flavors of grapefruit, pineapple and orange. Here the bitterness makes itself known and helps to balance out the sweet malt body. This is superbly balanced.

The mouthfeel is soft and creamy. The carbonation is on the lower end, but doesn't hinder the final product. This is perfectly drinkable at 9.5%.

Overall, this is a gold medal type of DIPA and one of Pipework's best offerings. What really impresses me is the boundless tropical flavors and ease of drinkability. This is worth trying many times over.

Pours straw yellow with some darker hues of orange. Head is about one finger white and retains nicely.

Smell is incredible. Tons of fruity hop note are forward. Sweet mandarin oranges and blood orange are the main players but it smells like a fruit bouquet, you could probably pick out any light fruit imaginable in the nose. Nice light caramel malt sweetness finishes.

Taste follows the nose lots of fresh citrus and tropical fruits forward followed by a very mild piney bitterness. Tropical hop flavors last throughout the entirety of taste. Bitterness fades into a mild caramel malt sweetness with a delicious candy like yeasty butterscotch flavor.

Mouthfeel is great. Tons of hoppy oils and mild bitterness work well with the mild carbonation and sweetness. Very drinkable and the alcohol is near undetectable.

Poured from a 22 oz bomber, batch 81

A - Pours a hazy orange color with puffy 1.5 finger, white head.

S - Full citrus notes, grapefruit, orange, and lemon bursting out of the nose. Light floral in the background, bready malts, a little bit peppery.

T - Full mouth of hops here. Big on the floral hops, before changing to good, sweet citrusy hop bite. Finishes bitter and malty with a tinge of sting from the alcohol. Truly excellent

M - Incredibly full, yet smooth. Thick, even.

Overall - Blown away by this beer. Very, very good. A truly excellent DIPA

Batch #65. Served in a Founders snifter.

Appearance: Crystal clear gold with a fairly thin white head. Not much head retention.

Smell: Wow. I got a big blast of citrus hops almost instantly after cracking the cap, and my nose wasn't particularly close to the bottle. Bursting with waves of pineapple, passionfruit, and grapefruit, with just a hint of caramel peeking through here and there. Truly phenomenal. Packs that nice resinous punch that great DIPA's have. This is one of those beers that keeps your nose buried in the glass long after it's gone.

Taste: Same great tropical/citrus combo as the smell. Really, really powerful. Malt backbone is perfect - just enough to keep the hop explosion in check, but you don't really taste it at all. This is all about the hops, and the hops are spot on. The finish brings a perfect bitterness wrapped in another layer of pineapple.

Mouthfeel: Dry and crisp, just like all DIPA's should be. Medium carbonation. Once again, spot on.

Overall: Pipeworks kills it when it comes to IPA's. Actually, Pipeworks kills it, period. But this is definitely one of their best to date. Essentially flawless. Packs an obscene amount of flavor and aroma and yet has the drinkability of a pale ale. It's almost too drinkable. Gone far too fast...

Galaxy Unicorn - Pipeworks Brewing

Double IPA
9.5% ABV

APPEARANCE: Pours a murky, hazy orange with golden peach hues. Unfiltered but not finding any sediment in the initial pour. Big sudsy off white head that stuck around for the long haul. Leaving nice lacing all around the glass as it slowly dissipated.

AROMA: Big burst of over ripe oranges, grapefruit rind. Followed by a tropical cereal like aroma. Almost like that Special K with the dried fruit in it. Tons of hoppy, floral notes with a slight spicy earthiness. Backend grassy, slightly catty. Very interesting and inventing bouquet on this beer.

TASTE: Wow I new the nose had fruit on it but the taste it's a tropical fruit bomb! Fresh, juicy, ripe tangerines, pineapples even a bit of berry flavor. Toasted warm bread with honey butter on it. For sure getting some heat from the ABV but I actually enjoy that especially when it's balanced out with the big bitterness from all those hops.

MOUTHFEEL: Medium creamy body with a nice medium carbonation. Nice lingering oily finish. Super drinkable for a 9.5%.

OVERALL: This was my first pipeworks beer I thought it was outstanding I really enjoyed the galaxy hops flavor profile. The addition of wheat was very interesting as well. I found that all the sweet fruits where balanced nicely and not over powering at all.

RATING: 4.5/5 Zombie Heads!

On tap at Local Option 12/14/12, served in the Pipeworks Berliner glass.

Pour: Most clear pale orange with a finger and a half of soapy white head. Head hangs around for a litte bit, and leaves some lacing.

Smell: Huge burst of grapefruits and pineapple up front, with some nice floral aspects and light grassiness. Honestly, little to no malt found on the nose with the exception of a light breadyness. Really juicy and nice.

Taste: Follows the nose with big juicy grapefruit up front, pineapple, and some passion fruits. A nice light bready sweetness balances. Hope have a nice bitterness to them that is not overpowering in the least. Finishes juicy with citrus.

Mouthfeel: Super light and drinkable... almost off style, but still awesome. Drinks like a single IPA. Some booze come out as it warms, but only just.

Overall: Pipeworks best beer yet hands down. I hope they add this to the lineup.

With the "Galaxy" hop on full display, the trick is to provide a base flavor that supports the full range of the hop's flavor but without competing for attention. The smooth, creamy and semi-rich character of imperial pale ale underneath gives the cones the kiss that they deserve.

Its translucent golden globe casts peach and orange amidst the edges as the nose gains steam, projecting mouthwatering aromas of tropical and citrus with all their juicy vibrancy. Early flavors of sun-kissed ripeness invites the underpinnings of light caramel, shortbread, honey and tangy fructose to give the hops a sweet, tart, bready-sweet but all all-natural taste.

The middle palate is bursting with tangy sweetness and vibrant fruit brilliance as red grapefruit, tangerine pineapple, mango, apricot, passionfruit, lemon and kiwi pop off the tongue with nearly teeth-grinding tang and lightly bracing acidity. With the sweetness receding, the fruity hop flavors stand out even more with the finish coming on fast.

And with the sweetness waning, the smooth hop bitterness sets in and saturates the tongue with drying fruit, herbal grasses and a mildly resinous pine note. The mild warmth of alcohol penetrates its medium bodied texture and assists the hops and fleeting malt in a dry finish, equipped with a clean and crisp, bready after palate.

A: Glowing golden color with a fluffy two finger white head. Tons of lace and awesome retention.

S: Super juicy smell. Candied pink grapefruit, mango, pineapple and some guava.

T: Honey malt, tons of tropical fruit and a lingering grapefruit bitterness on the finish. Caramel, light piney hops and some pineapple. Slick moughfeel with some prickly carbonation that really complements the bitterness on the finish well.

And the unicorn parade marches steadily on... bottled today, and mere hours old. Allowed to settle in the fridge for a couple hours, it was actually still cold on the shelf from delivery.

Yellowish orange body, lightly hazed with a sizable head of white foam that leaves behind a flurry of spindly lacing in the glass. Retention is good, and lasts for the duration of the glass.

Bursting with tropical Galaxy hops in the aroma, big mango, orange, passionfruit, a light fruity sweetness with catty dank botanicals, sandalwood plus a hint of the wheat in the background.

Juicy mango and bitter orange peel flavors right away, with a resiny bitter orange zest that lingers into the finish. Caramel hints in the aftertaste, some greenery and grass clippings towards the end. Creamy feel, damn near perfect in that respect. Not overly sweet or boozy, it just glides across the palate. Just when you thought it couldn't get any better than Citra Ninja or NvU, Galaxy Unicorn hits it out of the park. Well done gentlemen.

Bottle from buzze40, 650ml bottle into a tulip. Batch 65.

Clear orange, white head with decent lacing and retention. Nose has huge pineapple juice character, piney, citrus and general fruit juice notes. Sweet candy-ish malt character. Taste has more pineapple juice, piney bitterness, gummy bears and candy malt. Medium sweetness cut by a nice sharp but not too intense bitterness. Some alcohol and lower medium carbonation. Crazy nice hop profile, huge hit.

Bottle from West Lakeview Liquors. Bottled yesterday. Served in a Bell's tulip.

A - A finger of late-rising white foam settles to a partial cap, thick collar, and stray fingers of lacing. Light hazed peach skin-colored body with a few slow-moving bubbles visible.

S - Unsurprisingly the Galaxy hops are front and center, with notes of passion fruit, guava, tangerine, cat pee and onion. Even though this is a 9.5% DIPA, the malt bill is a more complementary than balanced, with a a touch of sugar and dough that combined with with tropical mélange gives this a fruit punch-esque vibe. The sugary note increases as the beer warms up.

T - The taste is quite similar, with tropical fruits dominating mid-palate before yielding to palate-bruising herbal and dank notes. Malt imparts some candied citrus and lightly browned sugar. There's sufficient balance to keep the bitterness from getting totally out of hand, an issue that tends to plague other Galaxy-based beers, but this is very much a hop showcase.

M - Active and pleasant moderate carbonation, hefty medium-full body, with creamy and chewy texture. A tiny bit of alcohol warming but nothing excessive for 9.5%; the bigger body hides the alcohol well.

D - An excellent beer. I had no problem working through the bomber and I'll definitely be buying more of this one. The bitterness gets a tad fatiguing after a glass, but not excessively so. Every release like this makes me happier I chipped in for Friends with Benefits - kudos guys!

Hazed golden orange, 1.5 fingers of white head, some lace. Lots of tropical fruit on the nose, grapefruit, orange and pineapple, juicy fruit, well hopped, dank with a honey-malty presence throughout as well. Taste is a mix of sticky hop, fruity citrus, pineapple, orange with a bit of a sweet malt closer, quite bitter throughout. Oily medium body, lightly carbonated. Truly great stuff, i'm surprised you don't see tons of ISO's for this, a fantastic DIPA.

Lots of tropical fruit aromas here with very strong apple and pear notes too. Thought the palate was just what i was looking for. Big tropical flavors with a whole lot of citrus. poured into snifter glass.

batch # 255 56 57 62

Appearance: Pale golden with a tinge orange bodied beer with 1 full finger of white head. The head has good staying power and leaves a thick lacing all over the side of the glass. Head eventually drops down to a thin cap.

Smell: Sweet oranges and tropical fruits. Mild pine notes. Bready malts. Smells a little soapy and "catty". Slightly floral and "perfumey".

Taste: mild almost moderate bitterness level in this DIPA. Starts off with flavors of chalk and resinous pine. Then the citrus and tropical fruits show up. Loads of pineapple flavor. Sweetness from the malts taste like bread and a hint of honey. Grapefruit and lemon zest in the finish that linger for a short time; it got light bitterness in the finish.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation levels. This beer drinks lower than its listed 9.5% abv.

Overall: This is another fantastic DIPA by Pipeworks! It is in my top 3 favorite pipeworks DIPA's. In the same company with Citra and Simcoe. I like that Pipeworks can make DIPA's that arent brutally bitter, but are still really full of those hop flavors. Very nice representation of galaxy hops!

Thanks to drewone for sharing this one at his tasting.

Batch # 442/443.

Pours a hazy honey gold with a foamy bone head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, citrus zest, and tropical fruit aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest and tropical fruit flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with really nice fruit forward hop characteristics all around.
