Batch #74 poured into Bruery tulip

Pour: Black with no light penetration. Head maybe 1/4 finger size and beige-light brown. Surface appears as though like an oil slick.

Smell: Fresh ground coffee with a hint of vanilla. Bitter chocolate, caramel, but the coffee is where its at as it dominate the smell in a great way.

Taste: One of the best up front clean tasting coffee stouts I have ever had. Again this one is all about the coffee. Very rich almost gourmet tasting coffee with vanilla, cocoa, some caramel sweetness. Vanilla is present as a great compliment to the coffee. This is one rich tasting imperial coffee stout.

Mouthfeel: More so on the heavy side with some mild carbonation. A slick, oily beer that coats the entire mouth with coffee goodness. I actually think a bit more carbonation would be nice but just a touch and this is actually picking it apart.

Overall: If you do not enjoy coffee do not, I repeat do not try this beer. It does not disappoint as a coffee forward stout. Outstanding clean, fresh tasting coffee in this one. Really well done Pipeworks! You guys have done it again!

2013 vintage consumed June, 2014.

Medium brown-black color, like an English stout or darker brown ale, topped with a small tan head. In the aroma, old coffee and dry dark malts. Roasty bitterness in the taste, flavors were kind of thinned out, dark malts, old coffee grounds, vanilla just barely coming through as more of a sour cream sensation. Mouthfeel was way too light and thin for the style, and somewhat chalky, alcohol was neutral. This beer was pretty messy, and I had no desire to have more than a small sample. Maybe it's better fresh, but I can't imagine a beer starting out good and then turning into this in a mere year's time.

A: Pours a dense black color with a one finger cream colored head. The head drops down fairly quickly, but this definitely looks pretty solid.

S: Earthy, dark roasted coffee laced with just a hint of cherry. Espresso, dark chocolate and fudge. Faint when it's cold, but the smell really starts to shine once this warms up.

T: Coffee and cream, a light nuttiness, caramel and very faint vanilla. Steady roast note throughout and some chocolate syrup and dark chocolate on the finish with a lingering roasted coffee note. Very good stuff.
