Batch #96 poured into Ballast Point tulip

Pour: Ok-an over the top (literally) four fingers off white head. This head refused to let up as it lingered forever and left just an absurd amount of lacing that almost looks like it has been left over night to dry on the glass. It will not let go of the glass. It is an absolute beautiful clear amber-copper orange with an unbelievable clarity. Fine bubbles are visible rising to the surface.

Smell: Completely tropical forward. Lemon, orange, pineapple, mango, peach, grapefruit all smelling very juicy! This beer is very enticing in the smell and has me excited to dig in. I do not get any alcohol and a bit surprising in that this is 10%.

Taste: Actually sweet and malty with a biscuit like and caramel and honey sweetness. Then like the nose and very juicy tropical fruits. Big pineapple and some orange with a touch of pine bitterness but this is balanced wonderfully by the sweetness. In the taste I do get some of the alcohol way in the back but it sits there just perfect and doesn't detract from the overall awesomeness of the taste of this beer.

Mouthfeel: Medium and pushing the higher end of this, actually. It is somewhat sticky with its sweetness but so easy drinking for a 10% beer. Light carbonation that is perfect for this beer.

Overall: I have yet to be let down by Pipeworks and their hoppy goodness. They have these styles dialed in and obviously in their wheelhouse. This to me is a grand slam for Pipeworks because I just think everything about this beer works. It helps that this bottle is ultra fresh. Well done Pipeworks! Well done!

Edit: As I continued to drink I must note the lacing on this baby is a sight to behold. Man I like this beer.

Thanks to Rainblows for this one! Thick, thick pour... wow, this beer looks nearly as thick as some stouts out there. Opaque copper; dingy and sludgy and murky and kind of swampy looking, topped with a soft, off-white head that doesn't waste any time shaving itself away, layer by layer, until only a meek, little film is left, stretched across the mucky brew.

The aroma's got plenty of hops - piney, citric, and coming out strong with a lot of grapefruit pungency. However, I am also sensing an equal, if not, *larger*, presence from the malt. Big-time malty sweetness, caramely and toffee-like with some residual, underlying sugars. It's relatively fresh, so this isn't necessarily hop fade; that's just how it is.

There are certainly more vibrant fruits present from the hops on the palate, including more grapefruit, grapes, and a mild tropical essence. However, the malt is just as amplified - this thing is quite malty. Caramel... sweet, sweet caramel. Normally, I love caramel. But I don't know how I feel about it in this capacity for a double IPA. I'm not totally vibing with it.

Despite the sweet, sticky, and eminently heavy malt attack, Unicorn's Revenge is substantially bitter on the back-end. Once the sweetness fades, it really comes out; staunch, robust, and heavy enough to rip your taste buds away. Sticky, bitter, malty sweet, and lightly fruity. Huge mouth feel... larger than life; thick, swampy, and maybe I can even use the word "chewy" here.

Not bad, but I don't feel the same love for this one as most others. I'm just not a huge fan of malt heavy IPAs or DIPAs, so this one wasn't quite a home run for me. I was hoping for more present flavor from the hops, too, rather than just the contributed bitterness. Glad I had the chance to try it, but I probably wont be trading for it again.

Bottle (2013)

Acquired via trade
Thanks, Hugonaut13!

Hazed copper with a creamy off-white head. Sticky, lined lacing down the glass.

Lots of melon (combination of honeydew and cantaloupe) in the aroma, along with some sweet citrus components. Enough sweet, bready malt backbone to balance things out. Quite nice.

Bitter and juicy grapefruit flavors combine with the melon found in the aroma. Some bread and sweetness as well. Very well balanced. A touch of an alcohol presence is there on the finish, but it's mild and not distracting.

Medium to near full in body for the style. Moderate carbonation. Very drinkable.

Fantastic Midwest DIPA.

A - Dark orange color with a hazy, thick beer with a small white head

S - Orange, slight floral, pineapple, and pine to it. Great IPA nose on this one

T - Upfront, there is orange and pine with slight bitterness that lingers on the tongue in the finish. Light floral and earthy presence to it as well. Overall, I'd say the flavors are all soft as nothing is too big or standing out.

MF - Big carbonation in this as well with a creamy body with a slight thickness to it. It leaves a hop resin on the tongue in the finish

O - Solid beer that makes a good impression with the New Zealand hops. Has a good balance between citrus and pine to it. Good flavor throughout.

Batch 130
(Served in a teku)
A- This beer pours a slightly hazy deep copper body with a thick pale white head that is thick and supported by a sluggish carbonation of microbubbles.

S- The rich jammy green fruit cocktail aroma during the pour turns a spicy hop in the finish the aroma is rather fleeting.

T- The big pungent hop bite in the finish clings to the tongue in the after taste. There is some toasted malt hints that blend into the background and offer some support of the big hop flavor.

M- The medium-full mouthfeel has a warm alcohol heat that kicks up the bitterness level as it opens.

O- Nice hop aroma that fades pretty quickly and the taste is a full spicy pungent hops and alcohol heat blended together. There doesn’t seem to be much depth or hop flavor in the taste and it lessens as the beer opens.

Batch 96

A: Hazy bright gold with a yellow-stained cream head. Great pillowy dense foam head.

S: Started off pungently aromatic and has died down quite a bit, sadly. A lot of vivid, ripe tropical fruits- musty mango and pineapple, sweet grapefruit. Big caramel sweetness - butterscotch/toffee.
Decent pine mintiness and resin to round it out.

T: First hit with a crisp bite of citrus and tropical fruit hop bitterness, then a wash of the resin and pine. The caramel increases with time. Very sticky, pungent fruits - mango and pineapple and tangy orange juice.

P: Big, perfect for a DIPA - medium to full body, sticky and slightly chewy.

O: Fantastic addition to the series, right up there with galaxy and citra

Bright rusty orange, translucent, and an appreciable white head to it.

It smells fruity as hell with sweet but not bitter tropical fruits, specifically mango and papaya. Light floral notes and a whiff of baby powder. Hmm.

Sweet tropical fruits and lilac flavors with a sugary sweetness. Bubble gum, too. It's boozy as fuck.

Mouthfeel is heavy and a bit oily, but good carbonation.

Pipeworks just keeps cranking out solid beer after solid beer. This one isn't as clean as some of the other "ninja/unicorn" series, but it packs a much more boozy punch.

Saturated dark orange color, copious foam and lace coating the opposite side of the glass. Clusters of bubbles raft on over to the sides of the glass.

Fruity aroma, candied orange peel and dried mango, some leafy green resin and pale malt under the surface.

Flavors follow suit, orange/mango/cantaloupe fruitiness, resiny green hop undercurrent, hint of pale malt again. A little bit of earthy mango in the aftertaste. Medium bodied and drinkable as all Pipeworks DIPA's have been, this one seems to be a variation on a theme, though not straying far into unique territory. Solid and flavorful, really enjoyed and would drink it again.
