This epic battle is exhausting The Unicorn. He's been at it fighting all sorts of creatures, spirits, beings from other worlds and other dimensions. If there's one thing The Unicorn hates, it's sadness. If there's another one thing The Unicorn hates, it's exhaustion. It is time The Unicorn made all others regret the day, they began this epic battle! With an intense and unexpected juicy and floral combination that can only come with generous amounts of New Zealand hops.

My one complaint about this beer was when I took it out of the box, the cap was loose. Of course, this caused the bottle to de-pressurize. For that, I give Pipeworks a frowny face.

Appearance - The beer was a handsome copper color with a white head. Lacing was noted on the sides of the glass and sediment was present in the glass.

Smell - A definite pine aroma was dominate. On closer review, one may detect the citrus.

Taste - On the initial taste, one detects the pine and the citrus. Spicy grapefruit and orange were noted. As the beer wanes into the aftertaste, one notes the piney resin that continues to a sustained assault on the tongue.

Mouthfeel - A nice level of thickness allows the taste to linger. The citrus notes are downright abrasive on the sides of the tongue.

Overall - Unicorn's Revenge was enjoyed in a bottle share with Stone's Enjoy by. Unicorn was the consensus winner. This is a tasty beer.

1 PINT 6 FL. OZ. bottle
Served in a tulip glass
Batch 169 7.16.13

A - This beer is opaque with an orange center surrounded by sunset highlights. It was topped with a couple inches of off-white head.

S - When I popped the bottle I got some good citrus aromas. Once I poured it I smelled a sweet caramel, piney mess. The sweetness and pine were not complimentary.

T - I unfortunately get some bready malt. I was hoping for a glorious hop check to my 'buds. I get some pine in the aftertaste.

M - This is a thick IPA. That is good.

O - I can't believe this beer would fall off this much in just under two months. I had the Citra Ninja much fresher and got some of the same sweetness. I would like to try it fresher. I loved the Ninja vs. Unicorn. The other two mentioned were a disappointment.

A - Cloudy medium amber/orange colour with one finger of cream coloured head.

S - Fresh pine and grapefruit with a hint of tangerine and a sweet caramel malt backbone.

T - Sharp bitterness with grapefruit, orange zest and pine and a big caramel malt sweetness.

M - Medium body. Sticky and oily. Light carbonation.

Thanks to Rainblows for this one! Thick, thick pour... wow, this beer looks nearly as thick as some stouts out there. Opaque copper; dingy and sludgy and murky and kind of swampy looking, topped with a soft, off-white head that doesn't waste any time shaving itself away, layer by layer, until only a meek, little film is left, stretched across the mucky brew.

The aroma's got plenty of hops - piney, citric, and coming out strong with a lot of grapefruit pungency. However, I am also sensing an equal, if not, *larger*, presence from the malt. Big-time malty sweetness, caramely and toffee-like with some residual, underlying sugars. It's relatively fresh, so this isn't necessarily hop fade; that's just how it is.

There are certainly more vibrant fruits present from the hops on the palate, including more grapefruit, grapes, and a mild tropical essence. However, the malt is just as amplified - this thing is quite malty. Caramel... sweet, sweet caramel. Normally, I love caramel. But I don't know how I feel about it in this capacity for a double IPA. I'm not totally vibing with it.

Despite the sweet, sticky, and eminently heavy malt attack, Unicorn's Revenge is substantially bitter on the back-end. Once the sweetness fades, it really comes out; staunch, robust, and heavy enough to rip your taste buds away. Sticky, bitter, malty sweet, and lightly fruity. Huge mouth feel... larger than life; thick, swampy, and maybe I can even use the word "chewy" here.

Not bad, but I don't feel the same love for this one as most others. I'm just not a huge fan of malt heavy IPAs or DIPAs, so this one wasn't quite a home run for me. I was hoping for more present flavor from the hops, too, rather than just the contributed bitterness. Glad I had the chance to try it, but I probably wont be trading for it again.

Batch 169. Pours a hazy copper orange color with half finger head that immediately dissipated to a thick ring of lacing. Smells interesting. Lots of melon, grapefruit, pine resin, floral notes, and some carmel and bready notes. Taste pretty much mimics the smell. Starts with hefty doses of grapefruit and melon. Get a nice addition of dough and toffee from the malts in the middle. The finish is pretty resinous and brings notes of melon, grapefruit, tropical fruit, pine, and grass. Get a little malt character too to balance it a little, but the finish still leaves a lingering abrasive bitter taste. Also get some booze on the finish and definitely warms you up. Full body with a sticky and oily feel to it that could be improved. This is a big and hoppy brew that showcases the New Zealand hops nicely.
