750 ml bottle, with Batch #202 handwritten on the label. Finally getting around to trying this saison from Pipeworks; the premise definitely sounds unique and interesting, so I'm excited to have it.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter.

A - Pours a nice cloudy golden yellow colored body with two and a half fingers of fizzy white head. Some thin lacing. Looks pretty good.

S - Sadly enough, cucumber doesn't really jump out as much as I'd hope, but it is definitely in there. Musty and vegetal. Creamy. Lemony. Fresh watery cucumber is apparent.

T - Lightly tart and spritzy, lemony and citric up front, with underlying herbal vegetal qualities. I would never know there was peppercorns or celery seed in this without being told.

M - Feel is smooth, creamy, fluffy, spritzy, and clean. Lightly tart citric sort of finish. Light-bodied with good carbonation.

Overall, a nice example of a saison, but not as vegetal as I'd expected, but I suppose it's all a matter of perspective. Either way, it's a delicious beer, I recommend it, and I would have it again.

Pipeoworks Poivre Vert ---4/5.

Thanks to GRG1313 for sharing this one at his tasting.

Batch # 202.

Pours a hazy orange with a foamy off-white head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, cucumber, and pepper aromas. Taste is much the same with cucumber and pepper flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with an interesting use of cucumber and whatnot.

Appearance: A slightly cloudy golden color. Very clear for a saison. Average head on the pour which dissipated quickly. Light to medium carbonation active in glass. No lacing.

Smell: Wow a ton of celery and cucumbers burst out of the bottle. A slight peppercorn spiciness in the body and back end. There is also a nice balance of bready yeast character mixed in. At first the veggies jump out, but give it time and plenty else is going on.

Taste: Like the aroma, green veggies get you right away. The peppercorns take out a lot of the celery and cucumber bitterness and a very earthy smoothness is left behind. Slight yeast presence. The finish is a slightly bitter vegetable feeling.

Mouthfeel: Tons of earthy tones which has contributions from the yeast, peppercorns, and veggies.

Overall: Really impressed with how this brew came together. The peppercorns and greens play along together incredibly well. The saison accents get masked a little bit but can still be found. Props to Pipeworks for doing something truly unique.

Batch 202

A - Hazy yellow with a thin white head.

S - Belgian phenols, earthy, vegetal cucumber, peppercorn, herbal.

T - Fresh cucumber, peppercorn comes across more as spice or heat on the tongue, light celery seed, slightly earthy and vegetal with some yeasty phenolics.

M - Medium body with fizzy carbonation and a slight heat from the peppercorn.

D - A very nice cucumber beer. This would be excellent on a warm day. Dry with some spice making you take sip after sip.

A: Pastel orange-yellow in color. Very hazy. Forms a moderate sized off
white colored head. Good retention. Lots of lacing.

S: Aroma is quite vegetal and is dominated by cucumber skins. There is a bit of herbal quality to it as well with lighter notes of celery and yeasty spices.

T: Taste is full-on salad. Again the cuke dominates the beer, with lesser notes of celery and green pepper. Mild to moderate sweetness. Peppercorn notes on the back end come through more as a spiciness than a distinct flavor. Herbal finish. Dry finish.

M: Medium bodied with a slight creaminess to the beer. Mild peppery spiciness. Dry on the finish. Mild bitterness.

O: Okay, this beer isn't bad. Really, it's not. But my wife gave up after the first sip leaving me with 749ml of salad beer when a single glass is more than plenty. Luckily, it's nowhere close to being a drain pour so I put it away, but I can safely say I won't need to be revisiting this beer anytime soon.

Batch 202

Pours hazy orange with a 1 finger white frothy head that dissipates into a thin film over the top. There's a fair amount of sediment also present.

Smell is very interesting. First thing to hit is Belgian phenol spice and loads of peppercorn. Cucumber gives this an awesome fresh clean scent that works very well to mellow out the sharp peppercorn. Hops are herbal and tie the whole thing together. Really complex.

Taste is awesome. Some sweet light malt is upfront along with a big fresh cucumber and a light bite from the peppercorn not a whole lot of hops but there is a very light bitterness.

Mouthfeel is great. High carbonation, medium to thick body and an awesome crisp finish.

Overall I think this is a great saison. Lots of complexity and a unique take on a unique style.

Unique brew. Definitely can taste the cucumber. I don't know that I would have more than one at a sitting, just a little too unique. Would be outstanding paired w food. Unfortunately, I drank it alone while watching a Bears game.

Will definitely keep a bottle around to have it on hand for the right meal - haven't decide what that is yet.

Brewed with 120 lbs. of pureed cucumbers.

On tap at Zwanze Day 2013. Served into a mini goblet glass.

Hazed orangey yellow, ever present layer of white foam on the surface. Carbonation visible around the edges as the glass is tilted.

Earthy aroma, Belgian yeast and noticeable vegetal notes of cucumber. Taste is similar, earthy with some garden vegetable qualities. Cucumber is very present and well integrated. Light peppery spiciness of green peppercorn, celery seed, and Belgian yeast, smooth feel with a clean bitterness in the dry finish. Overall this was a great summer refresher, went back a dozen times for 2 oz. pours >_>
